A man was fatally shot early Sunday outside a Franklinton convenience store that police say he had just robbed.

Courdney Deonte Sims, 25, was shot in the parking lot of the UDF store at 1043 W. Broad St. around 12:30 a.m., according to Columbus police.

Sims was transported to Mount Carmel West hospital, where he died shortly before noon, police said.

A 911 caller from inside the store said there were three customers and four employees in the UDF when Sims entered.

The caller, who identified herself as an employee, said Sims was wearing a white hoodie, blue gym shorts and was holding a silver handgun when he walked in. She said she heard three gunshots but didn’t think anyone had been shot. It’s not clear whether she meant Sims fired the gun inside the store or whether she heard the shots outside.

Police said Sims took cash from several registers before leaving the store. He was walking toward the alley south of the store when he was shot.

The unidentified shooter left the scene before police arrived. In a statement, police said they are asking the shooter to “come forward with his side of the story." But police wouldn't say whether Sims was robbed of the money he was suspected of taking from the UDF.

Sims was described by police as a “person of interest” in

a number of other robberies. He had been convicted and sentenced on a robbery charge in 2010, court records show.

Sims was sentenced to four years of probation, but violated the terms in 2012 and was re-sentenced to three years in prison.

A local UDF manager and a corporate spokeswoman would not comment.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the homicide unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-645-TIPS.

Sims’ death was the city’s 67th homicide this year.

When is a victim not considered a victim?

This was the debate raging on the Columbus Police Facebook page over the past two days.

On Sunday, police posted an item on Facebook about 25-year-old Courdney Deonte Sims, who police say robbed a Franklinton UDF store on West Broad Street. When he walked out of the store, Sims was shot and killed by someone who then left before officers arrived. That person has not been found.

On Facebook, officers referred to Sims as the victim of the shooting. Commenters shared their frustration with the term. They argued that Sims was not a victim, as he had just committed a robbery.

“I believe strongly that the police should revel in the fact that the robber of several local businesses has been neutralized and our city is safer for it,” one man wrote.

After a few dozen similar comments, police changed the word “victim” to “robber.” They did point out, however, that for investigate purposes, Sims is both. And his shooter could face charges.
