AT&T has ZERO coverage . . . Well, they do have "Edge" coverage but it's about as fast as regular dial-up.

Verizon, Sprint and t-Mobile are the only "cellular" provider in the Shoals area. Only Verizon covers the rural areas, though.

So, best choice for high speed service, in order of most reliable: Comcast, AT&T (land line, not wireless) and Verizon.

And then there's satellite. Folks seem to be pleased with it but it sucks compared to AT&T/Comcast service.

Yes. The furnish you with a little USB flash-drive-looking thingy that you can plug into a desktop computer for use at home or take it with you on a laptop down to the beach surfing all the way.

Your choices are going to be Verizon and satellite such as Hughesnet.

Just curious, Sofa King, if you have a desktop set up at home for the kids and then a laptop for yourself, does that work? Is there some way to network them or do they give you more than one little USB flash-drive-looking thingy?

Thanks a lot! Wasn't sure about Verizon having internet for the home. Sounds like this is just what I'm looking for.

Two ways I can think of. One, internet connection sharing in windows. I dont know if the newer versions of windows support it, but the older versions did. Research it online.

Second, I think its verizon that has a wireless 'hotspot' for up to 5 wifi connections. It works like a cable modem and a wireless router, you set it up by itself and all the other computers connect to it. It supposedly travels easily too.

Jeepin'
Thank, Jeepin'. I will take this info. to Verizon and inquire about it. I'm not all that "tech savy" and have been very slow to get my toes wet with all of the wireless contraptions, guess it's time to jump on in.

Thanks to you too Tokyo for starting this, who knows how long it would have taken me to inquire about this. Hope your thread helped you as much as it helped me. lol
WO, I have Verizon broadband and we switch from my desktop to my sons laptop all the time. All you have to do is load the program that comes with the package.
I had to learn though that you are limited to how many gigabytes you use because just like on the phone service you are charged when you use more than you are allotted. $60 a month for 5 gigabytes.
In the beginning I went over and they helped me out some to get used to it. The thing that drains it the most is downloading songs I think.
This last month our usage was under 4 gigs. It does have a meter of sort that tells you how much you have used so far and when it resets.
We haven't went over for quite some time now. 5 gigabytes is a lot of info, I think?
I highly suggest you install a bandwidth monitor ( http://www.shaplus.com/bandwidth-meter/ ) to see what you use if you don't know. If you happen to use comcast, and pay your bill online you can check in most places in the country now (they have a 250gb limit)

Anyhow to help you out this is the typical size of things.

1 normal web page visit = 150kb or 33,333 pages @ 5gb
12 megapixel camera image = 10mb or 500 pictures
3 minute youtube video = 5mb or 1,000 views (also the size of 1 itunes song)
1 hour magicjack phonecall = 56mb or 89 hours.
1 hour netflix SD stream = 660mb or 7.5 hours
1 hour hulu SD stream = 350mb or 14 hours.
1 hour of ustream viewing = 102mb or 49 hours.

Windows updates can sometimes be over 100mb monthly, and webpages can be megabytes in size if you visit multimedia heavy sites, and of course multiple computers will add more use.
So, is the IPad service (AT&T) ever coming to Florence?

I have Comcast Internet and Cable $100.00 (No premium channels). I also have the Droid with Internet $130.00. What I would like is WiFi for my laptop. The IPad would solve that for me. Not an option. I just came from Verizon and to add their WiFi would be an extra $60.00 plus all add ons Plus $100.00 for the device.

Consolidation of services would be great, but not an option. Again, is Florence ever going to have the coverage Huntsville and Nashville enjoy?

Has anyone heard of the app for Droid called pda.com? I could not find it, but a Verizon rep said it is only $20.00 and connects the Droid to your laptop for Internet access.

$20? -- spend three hours learning how to properly root your phone and install CM6 - http://www.cyanogenmod.com/

rooting allows wired/wireless teathering, and overclocking via setcpu-- in addition to removing all the verizon crapware.
