Iran has threatened Israel "wipe them off the map.." "the Holocaust didn't exist.."; interferred with Iraq's internal issues (supplied bombs, training, etc. to insurgents); and thumbed their nose, generally, at the world.

Now, they are developing a nuke device, and threatening to have something big happen on or about 11 FEB 2007 (if I remember the correct date...)

Iran police start wider crackdown on un-Islamic dress.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian police have launched a more extensive crackdown on "social corruption" such as women flouting Islamic dress codes, the Farhang-e Ashti newspaper reported on Monday.

"In its wider crackdown which has started from Saturday, police will confront those who appear in public in an indecent way and will also seal off shops selling un-Islamic dress," the newspaper said, quoting an unnamed police official.

The dress code imposed after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution requires women to cover all their hair and wear long, loose-fitting clothes to disguise the shape of their bodies.

Violators can receive lashes, fines or imprisonment.

The authorities usually launch crackdowns before the hot summer months when women like to wear lighter clothing such as calf-length pants and brightly colored scarves pushed back to expose plenty of hair.

But enforcement of strict moral codes governing women's dress became more strict since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad swept to power in 2005 with the backing of conservative clerics and the Basij religious forces who condemn such "un-Islamic" practices.

"Police will seize women with tight coats and cropped trousers and also men with Western-style hair cut will be arrested," the newspaper said.

Especially in the urban areas, many women ignore traditional head-to-toe black chadors. The Islamic dress code is less commonly challenged in poor suburbs and rural regions.

"Men with Western-style haircuts were confronted by police and also barber shops that gave them such haircuts were sealed off on Sunday," said the daily.

Some women, testing the boundaries of the law by wearing tight clothes were also confronted by morality police, located mainly at the affluent northern Tehran squares.

"Police also swept through popular shopping centers, where such outfits are sold and some of those shops were sealed off," the daily said.

A dose of reality:

(1)Iran never made a threat to "wipe Israel off the map;" Ahmadinejad was mistranslated.

(2) Ahmadinejad might be crazy as a jay bird, but he's not the commander-in-chief of Iran's armed forces. He's about as powerful as Nancy Pelosi.

(3) There is no way in hell Iran is supplying weapons to Sunni insurgents, who account for 95% of US casualties.

Oooh, something big is going to happen last year! Quick, the sky is falling!

You presuppose that Iran is actually developing a nuclear weapon when:

(1) They have a legitimate reason to want nuclear power instead of burning oil for electricity generation (oil is $140 a barrel in case you hadn't noticed).

(2) Iran has every RIGHT to control the nuclear fuel cycle, and given their history of dependence on Russia their nationalistic impulse is understandable.

(3.) The man who is ACTUALLY in charge in Iran, the Ayatollah Khamenei, has issued a fatwa declaring the development, testing, and stockpiling of nuclear weapons to be a crime against Islam.

(4.) There is as yet not a single shred of proof that Iran wants or is building a nuclear bomb. Claims that they are have a familiar lack of proof.

In this view of the world, conflict with "those crazy Iranians" is inevitable, so we might as well listen to John Hagee and wipe Iran off the map today. It's a craving for apocalypse.
Developing a nuclear weapon is a tremendously difficult enterprise, especially in a society in which science is condemned. It's a lot easier to buy one. For years and years we lived with the Soviet Union having on the order of 30,000 nuclear weapons. Even if Iran gets their hands on one, what are they going to do?

They're not that easy to move around, and they'll go bad in time. That's why we conducted testing on our strategic arsenal. I'd bet that if radical Islamics got their hands on one, they'd pop it off in their own territory and blame it on the US. Most of the world, including a lot of people in America, would believe them. That'd do more damage than sneaking one into some American city. Damaging the US might galvanize our population into actually doing something final and lethal to this threat.

Can't we tell the origin by the "signature" of the materials(Plutonium)involved?

Just curious.
Anyone who believes that Iran is "antiscience" is sadly mistaken. Iran is a modern, almost second world country. True, many of the old men in black turbans are against "innovation" in a social sense, but not against technology per se. The old ayatollah, when in France used to send back bootleg tapes to fire up the followers against the Shah.
The Taliban are antitechnology, save in military matters and their own comfort, it seems, but even bin Ladin of the al Qaeda uses/used videos and supposedly has a portable kindney dialysis machine for his own use.
The early Islamic empire centered in Baghdad was once the center of the world in scientific progress, from them the west got distillation, water power, the finest steel until modern times, and algebra as well as the concept of "al cifer" or "zero" as we know it in English.
I seriously doubt many in Teheran or Ishtafan have ever seen -- outside of a zoo -- much less ridden a camel! A Mercedes or a Nissan, yes, camel, no.
There are almost 80 million Iranians in Iran and a lot more Iranian language speakers and those who are culturally Persian than that, and they represent alongside the Indus cultures the "other" non-Sino or Western high culture from antiquity to now.
Ahmadjinidad is a loon -- about as representative of Iran as is the John Birch Society of America. He has little power, and must answer to the Supreme Revolutionary Council -- a bunch of old men in black turbans. He was elected as a "reformer" and ended up being the worst thing to happen to Iran since on the international stage since the Ayatollahs took over the country from the rebels.
Were Iran to launch a nuclear weapon against Israel, then the entire Arab world would rise up in war against their hereditary enemies, the Persians -- not to mention what France, the UK, the US, and Israel and the other nuclear powers might do . . .
The idea of turning Iran into a "sea of glass" is ludicrous -- what would that do to the rest of the world? Remember that the earth turns from the west to the east . . . and that means that the winds are prevailing westerlies and that means that everything east of Iran is in for a "little" fallout -- nothing that slaughtering all the dairy animals and not eating any crops until the Strontium and Cesium has decayed to a low enough level not to fill our thyroids with high energy gammas or a high energy delayed precursor that mimics Calcium in the bone and teeth. The dust in the atmosphere alone would blanket the earth in darkness and an ice age for many many years. The eruption of Krakatoa alone caused massive damage to the atmosphere for years in the late 19th Century, now multiply that by thousand of times and see what happens. Iran is about the size of the staes of California, Oregon and Washington -- that means a lot of nuclear bombs to me! It reaches in length from Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico when superimposed on a map of the US.
Only a crazy person would want to turn Iran into glass -- actually a sociopath, not your average "Personal agent of God" crazy.
You know, when you think about it; we put the Shah in Iran, he didn't work out too well. We also put Saddham in power, that didn't work out too well either. Then, we went after the WMD's and that has not worked out well at all. (To date, I believe we have found "0" WMD's) Maybe it is about time we just brought all our military people home and stop trying to run the middle east.

People forget that when Hitler mentioned the concept of "Lebensraum" in " Mein Kampf ", he meant it. If Ahmadinejad or the mullahs he serves say that Israel and the US will be destroyed or disappear from the face of the Earth, they might mean it.
[W]ithout consideration of "traditions" and prejudices, it [Germany] must find the courage to gather our people and their strength for an advance along the road that will lead this people from its present restricted living space to new land and soil, and hence also free it from the danger of vanishing from the earth or of serving others as a slave nation. --- Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf
