For the 1st time in 37yrs of filing a tax return,my federal envelope came back in the mail due to a $.17 lack of postage. It is postmarked the 13th & I got it back yesterday. Now,my tax form will be late getting in. Does anyone know if I will be charged late fees? Makes me feel like learning to fly !!! Eeker

probably not, include the original envelope with your taxes in a new properly paid envelop and you should be fine.

Thank you so much for the positive response...
I might just be able to sleep today.
Don't count on the fact that if you owe nothing there will be no fine.
Two years ago I overpaid my taxes by $1300. I pay quarterly, and have to do estimated tax payments. I overpaid them $1300, HOWEVER the payments were not equal. The first part of the year I made less money, so I paid less. Six months after I filed I got a letter from the IRS. I was being assessed a penalty. Because I paid them in unequal payments, I owed them $200, despite the fact that I had overpaid them by $1300.
The moral of this story, is never, ever underestimate the unfairness of a beauracratic machine which is charged with the task of taking from one group and giving to another.

that is an excellent point, however, i've noticed a difference in how the IRS goes after business as opposed to private individuals.
Oh,this started with the last year me & my ex filed together...it's been the devil since for me. They questioned something he had put down for deductions & I couldn't get proof, due to the privacy act. Well, who do you think they came after....me....I paid it $4,800 worth & they haven't left me alone since. That's why I got so outraged over recieving my forms back because of a $.17 lack of postage....thanks for your input...you are so right...
