What would you do if your pastor announced that he no longer believes in God?  It happens.  It stands to reason, also, that people who really study religion could come to understand its true nature and cease to believe the mythological aspects of it.

Have you thought about the pastor?  What about him?  He's stuck with a single skill and a family to feed.

This is an interesting site that publicizes this problem and lends support to enlightened clergy who can no longer pretend.

What would you do?  Would you understand and still regard him with love or would you resent him and dislike him?

I have heard of this happening. The head of the Philosophy Dept. when I was at Auburn was an avowed atheist and also a former Baptist minister or so I was always told.

You know if someone I respected came to the conclusion that there is no God  it would have an effect on me. I might stop and think about what if anything he presented as to his reasoning but I know what I believe so I don't think I would follow.

Also every pastor at my Church has held another job. We aren't large enough to support a full time pastor. I would think there are other career options for men who no longer preach.

When I was a kid, we had a pastor who stopped believing. He became a slumlord instead and was constantly being fined and hauled to court for not fixing up the apartments he rented. Places with substandard wiring, no heat, leaking pipes, that sort of thing.

I lost any respect I ever had for him, not because he had a crisis of faith, but because he proved that he cared nothing for other people.

Similar story here Ono. I know a preacher who stopped believing,  and became a drunkard. Oh well, an atheist life has its advantages.

DF what’s your story? You claimed you were an alter boy at one time.

there are many stories of pastors gone wild and turned into atheists.

So DF what's new? know of any preachers that left God and turned out good.

Go on give us a few Blair Scott says you can lie if you want to.

I knew a man that was so good. He would rescue poor animals and find them good homes, he would help feed and care for the homeless. He was good to his family. Then he found god and became a preacher. He started burning buildings, became a slumlord and a drunkard, beat his wife and kids, shot the dog, kidnapped the lindberg baby, sank the titanic, blew up the hindenburg, and challenger, shot john lennon, jfk, and the pope, killed hoffa and hid his body and then spit on the sidewalk!!! Oh my!!!! He claimed god told him to do it.

LOL.  I thought Elvis did all that.

Perhaps there should also be an organization for former atheists who have decided that there is a God after all.  Such an organization could perhaps be called the "Flew Forum," after Dr. Anthony Flew,  long the most famous and acclaimed of atheists, who finally decided that there had to be a God after all, having found  scientific evidence that persuaded him that there was indeed an intelligent designer behind the universe.

Flew can tell you all about it--here:

Hi Deep,

You have only highlighted what I have always said -- not all who attend church are Christian.  Many wear the Christian hat to further their own agenda -- be it power, material gain, or whatever.  But, one day, when the Lord returns to rapture His church out of the ever increasingly secular world -- many who will be left behind will be those standing in the pulpits.

Pastor are no different than other folks -- just that most are more educated.  But, being educated does not make one a Christian believer -- only faith, by grace, in the Lord Jesus makes one a believer.

So, my Friend, you are preaching to the choir.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

contendah, you should be ashamed.  Flew was in the throes of his dotage when he became confused about the gods.

I went to high school with a guy who became a preacher. He had a church in Leighton for awhile, bit I've lost track of him. We use to play chess a lot. We started in high school, and later picked it back up when he began preaching. One night, after his wife went to bed, he got out a bottle of, and after a couple of drinks of truth serum, he fessed up that he didn't believe any of the religious crap, but he loved the preacher job, because he never had to really do anything. He said he could put together a sermon in a couple of hours, and really didn't have to do anything else.

S. Coffee, when I was a kid, my mom ran a landscaping business.  She hired every pirate and ne'er do well (with an honorable exception or two) who came along.  Physical labor has few prerequisites.

One of the men was a good looking younger man who was a replacement preacher for a circuit of churches in the Florence, AL area.  He found regular work on Sundays, but it wasn't quite enough, so he landscaped during the week.  This SOB had a habit of attracting and picking up women, for purposes dis****bly holy, every day.  They sought him out, he was so handsome.  He seldom spent a night at home.

Just one in an unending series of stories of Holy Men who were only human.  My big beef with this guy is that he was so much better looking and successful than I!

You don't get off that cheaply, NSNS.  His statement is not the statement of one "in his dotage." His explanation of his defection from atheism is as clear and forceful as his many prior statements in defense of it.  Respect your elders and betters.

Every day someone "finds gawd" and starts to believe. Every day someone realizes it's just a tall tale and lets go of the belief in that myth. Respect his betters? LOL!!! Such as?

DF you are in the twilight your self. No need for you to feel compelled or obligated to keep cookey company in torment.

You did in the beginning of the forum become his mentor but he alone chose to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, in his own words, “for our entertainment”. By his own choosing he  reserved his seat in hell.

Anthony Flew was not just "someone."  You really ought to read up on the man before you make any more comments as irrelevant as the above.

Flew, in either his atheist mode or after he saw the light, was intellectually the better of most folks, including NSNS.
