It doesn't pay to be a hero, sometimes. A McDonald's employee who stepped in to prevent a man from beating up a woman in the restaurant got shot multiple times and ended up with $300,000 in medical bills. Now McDonald's says it's won't pay up because his injuries "did not arise out of or within the course and scope of his employment," the Arkansas Times reports.

Nigel Haskett, 22, has filed a workers' comp complaint. His lawyer says McDonald's is apparently sticking by company policy that it lays out for workers: Don't be hero, call 911. But even the judge handling the trial of Haskett's assailant singled him out in court. "Here is this young man working for minimum wage, coming to the aid of a woman," he said, before donating $100 to a fund set up on Haskett's behalf.

McDonald's removed a video from YouTube? Was that a video of the incident? Now that is interesting. They didn't claim copyrights when it was made. It was simply a tape. I don't know copyright law, which shows, but I just think you are supposed to claim it BEFORE you get you backside in a sling. Sounds fishy to me.

When McDonald's CEO died (without a cause by McDonald's) they dispatched their corporate jet to fly his body back to Australia. But I don't even see them putting a dollar in the fund for this guy. Old Ronald is either a "you know what" or he is shedding a tear, depending on whether he stands by his company or not.

And Sassy, it DOES happen to Police Officers as well. You risk your life every day you go to work.
Be Safe!

Thanks FTD, I'm quite aware of that, and have been through it twice before, and had numerous other situations where it could have. Thankfully, my employers saw fit to believe in me and back me to the fullest.

I am prepared if they don't, though.

Yeah it was a tape of the incident. It was on Headline News this morning. I can't find a link where they have it either.

It never hurts to be prepared!
My dad has a close friend, well he is my friend to, that worked for Lauderdale County,
& he was hit head on in his patrol car several years ago by a rather well known individual around here,(who was drunk), and he was not taken care of at all, in my opinion.
He still suffers every day from that accident & misses his job all at the same time.
Because he could still be working if that had not happened
.
Is the popular opinion here that McDonald's should pay his bills because they can afford to? If so, I can certainly see this point of view. Just to play devil's advocate though, McDonald's is in no way responsible for this man's injuries. The criminal who shot him is responsible. McDonald's probably has this policy (the call 911 policy) in place for the express reason of keeping their employees safe. But from a PR standpoint, Mickey D's should just pony up the dough and then seek a judgment (which will never be paid) from the shooter.
Here's a link to the original story, there is a video in the upper right hand section.

McDonalds employee shot

The insurance company is claiming he was counseled when hired to not interrupt a "robbery", but to call 911 and cooperate, so they assert he was not acting in the scope of his employment. As his lawyer points out, this was NOT a robbery, and by protecting the store's customers, he was acting in the best interests of his employer.
Well I know for a fact that WalMart tells their employees to be submissive and not get involved. But I would argue that you can't reasonably stand by if someone is getting hurt. Sure, if it is just the money then hand it over. But if somebody is getting hurt then maybe it is different morally but maybe not legally. I personally think it would be a good idea for McDonald's to help this guy out. It would be great publicity. I doubt it will happen. I doubt he will win any case. And most likely McDonald's won't miss a beat. Oh well.
