Diabetes reporting plans - HB 415 by Rep. Elaine Beech (D-Chatom) would require the Alabama Department of Public Health to submit an annual action plan to the Legislature on how to curb diabetes and obesity in Alabama.  It is suspected that drug manufacturers were behind the legislation.  MASA spoke with the sponsor about the problems with the bill and she agreed to pull the legislation.
          RESULT:  Did not pass.

Similarly, HB 504 by Rep. Jim Patterson (R-Merdianville) would have placed requirements on not only ADPH but also the State Employees' Insurance Board, Public Education Employees' Health Insurance Board and Medicaid to develop plans to reduce diabetes amongst the populations they serve and to report the data to the Legislature.  As with HB 415, it is suspected that drug manufacturers were behind the legislation, and the sponsor agreed to pull HB 504 as well once MASA and others involved objected to the bill.
          RESULT:  Did not pass.
