A fond memory along these lines...
While minoring in Japanese at UA (many moons ago now), I worked with the VP of JVC's family to help them adjust to livin' in Ttown. The Japanese equivalent of "Hurrah!" or "Yeah!" was enough to get one of their sons sent to the principal's office for cursing. Bless his sweet soul. They couldn't understand why the teacher got so upset. It took some explaining, but I finally communicated it to his mom... to both of our embarassment. Needless to say, they learned some new southern speak for words of exclamation real quick!
What I am interested in is when are they actually hiring, what will they pay, and will they pull a bait and switch like Walgreens Call Center did when they came here. It was stated in the TD when they had the Walgreen officials and the then elected officials splashed on the front page that the company would hire as many as 500 workers with a starting hourly rate for customer service reps around $14.00 per hour. Over one thousand applied when they finally started taking applications. Well the first group hired was told AT THE AL STATE EMPLOYMENT SERVICE MIND YOU: that the actually starting salary would be $10.25. Still a fortune at the time for this area. When the first group, 18 in number, actually showed up for their first day of work and orientation it was revealed that the starting hourly rate would be $8.00 and hour with a 90 day probationary period which included NO BENEFITS. Well, those that stuck it out, and mind you a few had quit jobs making slightly more WITH benefits, after the 90 days were supposed to get Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance. All of a sudden it was told to employees that the insurance carrier would be United Health Care (who coincidentally had just signed a contract with Walgreen's to handle their claims calls) Well the only problem was that United Health Care had EXTREMELY limited physicians and medical facilities in this area which took their insurance! A lot of people just gave up, lie after lie and the grueling situation of working in an electronic sweat shop proved too much. And they did all this AFTER receiving a 2 million dollar incentive from SEDA and tax abatements for 20 years. SO, what I am getting at is the picture and articles has been splashed for N American Lighting, is this another Walgreens? How about it investigative reporters at the TD? Are the citizens of the Shoals are being duped again?
Well you are certainly right Joy, but didn't someone at SEDA or Forrest Wright or the local officials do that? This is what I am trying to put the spotlight on. Scott Carrier said at the last council meeting how disheartening it is that citizens in this area just plain don't trust anyone in the local governments anymore. Wonder why? How can we! We weren't allowed to vote on the RSA gas hike, SEDA has done very little and one of the 2 projects that have been brought in the last 10 years was Walgreens with taxpayer money and I have told you the TRUTH about what really happened. Something the public officials and SEDA and the TD doesn't seem to want to reveal, is it any wonder the citizens of this area are skeptical about EVERYTHING that comes from the local govt. Burn me once; shame on you. Burn me twice (or in this case who knows how many times) shame on me. And what is most disheartening is most people around here either don't seem to care or have just give up and go along to get along. People better wake up!
Shoals Lover, my sensei used to give me fits over my "southerneese" Big Grin

One day the boys' mom kept asking me, "Chonder? What chonder?" It took me forever to realize it was my southern speak and drawl stringing my words together that caused the question. What I had said was: "We'll go out yonder and get some apples so we can bake a pie." Her Japanese ears heard, "We go chonder."

And, you're right. No L's. That's why English is Engrish. Also no V's either. That's why vowel sounds like wowel, and travel like trawel.

A "harsh-sounding" language, but a BEAUTIFUL culture, full of tradition. Makes me wanna drag out the old kimono, obi and "happy coat" from the closet. I miss getting to work with Japanese. It was actually not too hard to learn. It helps that it's a "verb final" language. I loved it... and learning to write katakana and hiragana... but that kanji is a killer! Especially for this lil' ol' southern girl. Razzer
Joy you may not know this: Alabama is a "right to work state." This means that an employer can change policy at anytime, for any reason, can fire at will for no reason whatsoever if not violating federal regulation and can basically do whatever they want. Now this is different if their is a union involved: unfortunately unions are dead or dying thanks to the stranglehold of big business and the Republicans for the past 20 years. Now all this said: Why do you think all these automotive plants have located in the state? Why is every corner of the state except the Northwest one of Alabama thriving? Because, for too many years there has been uninvolved city officials who are corrupt, do nothing SEDA who is purposely not even trying to land industry here without incentives, and since the textile industry bailed there is one connection that hasn't even been mentioned: THE ANDERSON FAMILY AND THEIR BUSINESSES. Keeping the unemployment or underemployment high in this area has allowed these low life scum of the earth brothers to employ Shoals area residents at practically minimum wages for years using fear and slave labor tactics, while the City officials did whatever it is they do or took whatever it is they take from them. Now this is a theory, but ONCE AGAIN one that an investigative journalist MIGHT take time to explore. Don't any of the reporters at the TD have the courage or insight to actually do some reporting? The list is long, people if the surface of all that is going on in this area were even scratched it would reveal a multitude of cancerous cells that exist.
MADDOG...No, I didn't know that, but I shouldn't be surprised. It's like the bid laws in Alabama (equally a complete joke). It is absolutely by the grace of God that we have any success in buiness in this state, and we look good compared to Mississippi, let me tell you. The good ole boys are killing both states.

They'se a harin' nahow!

If'n you'se uh injuneer!

Seriously, the firm is now hiring!

In fact, I posted so in this forum, and linked it in this thread.

Click on the title above to read it.

Again, click on the linked post to read the post. As I recall, it's a professional position, not an hourly position. Hourly folks'll be hired later.

This position is of leadership in engineering. So, if you're not an engineer, stop reading now, and just wait for the hourly wage jobs. They'll be coming. It's just a matter of 'first things first'.

Do you recall in the old forum the thread where an NAL employee said his family would be moving here?

Now... on to the subject of the Shoals area Anderson family, and Alabama's so-called "right" to work status.

The so-called right to work status that exists in Alabama is NOT a right to work. It certainly doesn't defend the employee! In fact, if you have brown eyes and tightly curled black hair, that can be a legal reaon for being fired in Alabama. No kidding!

In Alabama, one does NOT need a reason to be fired. PERIOD.

Now, the Andersons.

Don't get me started! (Too late!)

MADDOG 20//20 wrote in part that "Keeping the unemployment or underemployment high in this area has allowed these low life scum of the earth brothers to employ Shoals area residents at practically minimum wages for years using fear and slave labor tactics, while the City officials did whatever it is they do or took whatever it is they take from them."

Sounds good to me! I have no disagreement there.

If the Anderson family was so good to the Shoals area, why haven't they created several Endowed Chairs at UNA?

It's not as if they can't afford it!

The obvious lack of their largesse is the most compelling reason why they are not held in high esteem by me, or certain others.

One is blessed to be a blessing.

Merely putting people on a payroll for slightly-above-minimum-wage, is not a blessing. Far better to have a few well-paid employees whom do an outstanding job, than have many poorly paid employees whom give poor-quality work.

One is blessed to be a blessing.

Bless the community, state and nation by creating scholarships and endowing Chairs at the local University! Grow the University and grow the city, state and nation!

Same thing for the TimesDaily! It's not as if resources don't exist!

(Are y'all TD executives & staff reading this?)

Isn't he the councilman that recently rewarded the trust of his constituents by going to an alcoholic treatment center? I recall he said during his campaign that it was not a problem for him. As someone in his district I ask the same question of him about trust.
Some folks don't feel empowered in this area because they've been lied to by those whom purported to represent their interests.

Take Bobby Irons, for instance... PLEASE! Take Bobby Irons!

Anyway... if a person were to be honest, such as Bobby Irons would tell the people that he's a lying SOB who's out to steal from the poor and give to the rich, take candy from babies mouths, food from the hungry, medicine from the sick, blankets from the elderly, and crutches from the crippled, then he could be respected, because he'd be telling the truth!

But, he sings, kisses babies, says how honest he is, and voila!

He gets elected, and then, does what the heck he wants, all without regard to why he was voted in office!

LIAR, LIAR, LIAR !!

>BOBBY IRONS IS A LIAR!<
Man, did you pick the right screen name! You may be EVIL but you are no Genius! Scott may have had and still has a DISEASE as classified by the AMA and it may have relapsed due to the pressure he was under trying to protect the citizens on ALL of Florence, not just District 2, but he did whatever anyone with a progressive disease does, including diabetics and others, he sought treatment and remaintained his regiment. Yeah, we need more Scott Carrier types than EVIL GENIUSes!

Judging by dealings of other council members (past and present), I suspect several were "three sheets to the wind". Wink

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I believe MADDOG brought up some of the most relevant questions I have seen on this forum. These questions should be answered in the coming few months.

I have no dog in this fight (no offense intended) but I have seen this bait and switch Maddog refers to up close in another place.

If this company does what they have promised I think they would be glad for everyone to know. If not, everyone else will become a little wiser (again no offense) about industrial recruiting, and how tax money is spent.

tdreader, I am glad you ressurected this older post!!!! It is something that a lot of people do INDEED need to keep up with... the promises and if they ARE fulfilled, and the benefits if they are fulfiled too...

GREAT points you guys!!!!
