I wish we could pick the new Lauderdale County judge here.

Miss Julie, I'm not going to vote, since I said that I would not endorse anyone in this. I did send my personal recommendation to Gov. Riley.

For those who would like to read the bios of the three candidates or need the address/fax number of Gov. Riley, you can find them here:

Yeah, me too, FirenzeVeritas.
I think Mr. Self would be a great replacement as well.
He is an honest, church going man and a dedicated family man.
Which speaks highly to his character, to me.

Judge Hall already has a good job as the City Judge & has done great work there. I think he should be happy to stay where he is at.
It's the salary differece. I'm not sure how much Judge Hall makes, but substantially less than a circuit court judge. Plus, the state retirement is a big factor.

As the article stated, if Hall is chosen, then Florence will have to choose a new city judge, as well as Killen and Lexington.

I got ya! Well we all know money talks, so guess I can see his point now.
I was surprised that Mr. Willson didn't get any votes, although I don't know the man. I sorta know Mr. Hall because he has lived across from my mom for years and have never met Mr. Self, although my best friend is very well acquainted with him.

Do ya'll know when we will know who Gov. Riley selected? I know it was in Shoalonda Speaks and I clicked back over there but I missed it - I probably need to get me some new glasses! Big Grin
As far as we know, there has been no selection as of yet. After the columns on the three candidates, we did columns on Mike Jones and Jimmy Sandlin--that may have confused some.

You can still contact the governor with your choice:

The about site gives addresses, etc., in a post three days ago.
Shoalanda,
I don't think James Hall has every had a heart attack. He was diagnosed with a heart condition around that time, but not a heart attack.
Shoalonda,
What do you think the chances are that the Governor will actually give what we say any thought or consideration? And also, I feel certain that you have probably answered this before, but once appointed, how long would this individual serve before an election? Thanks!
I have filled out the form, hand written a letter, and have also called Govenor Riley with my reccomendation and everyone who cares, (which should be every resident in Lauderdale County), needs to do the same.
Here is the phone number 1-334-242-7100.

Julie, I for one, do believe that Gov Riley listens to the people & does take our opinions/feelings into consideration.
He is a wonderful, thoughtful man.
And that is just how he rolls!! Wink
Just my Opinion , would think who ever he dicides on ,will do an ok job. My opinion maybe Mr Hall maybe most ready for the job , Mr Jaskson not far behind in that both of these have been in and around many more court cases , Mr Jaskson as an Ass D.A. and then appointed D.A by Gov. Riley for the 6 months. And it was a fairly close Race for D.A. even thro Mr. Jaskson was running against the Democrats. now not saying when all said and done Mr Self may very well be as good or better if appointed. Gov. Riley , may appoint Mr Jaskson for same reason he did for that D.A. appointment , who knows . It is good ya'll have voiced your thoughts to Gov. Riley .. I wished many more would.. It is very Important for ALL in Lauderdale Co. sad thing is , as so many other things , Most all never gets involed in things as this , but when things go worng they be the first to Yell Out the Loudest !!
My money is on Jenkins. Not saying that would be my pick, but he is the most openly Republican of the three. The other two might agree to run as Republicans, but I don't see that convincing Riley. I think Jenkins' comment that the new judge will be doing mostly civil work is somewhat presumptious. That was the case when Suttle was presiding. I think Jones wants the new judge to take more of the criminal load now that he's the presiding judge. As far as I know, Jenkins don't know squat about criminal work. It would be a big learning curve I suspect.
Miss Julie, Suttle did do some criminal cases, just not the high profile rape or murder trials. For the record, Willson Jenkins is the only attorney who contacted me when I profiled each of them.

I was tempted to endorse Jenkins, but since it is not an election and there is unfortunately not that much interest in the first place, my humble endorsement would have done little for any candidates I would assume.

I am still displeased that Billy Jackson did not make the short list, but perhaps there are reasons. If I had to bet, and it would be a toss up, I would think Riley would give the nod to Hall. If that does happen, Florence will then need a new municipal judge. Jackson should not want that since I understand the salary for prosecutor and judge are almost identical.

If we live in Florence we will immediately need to lobby for our candidate in order for Dogette or someone similar not to be appointed. We have at least one overly qualified attorney who regularly works in Municipal court and I will be actively campaigning for him if the need arises.
This may not be the time for it, but I am making an attempt at a injecting a little humor here. Would it not be entirely way too over the top hilarious if by some ungodly fluke that job of city judge did end up in Ed Dogette's lap? ew, That scares me almost as much as the thought as one of the other people getting Judge Suttle's old job! Eeker

None of the news media or the governor's office has this on their web sites. Can you confirm that Gil Self has gotten the job?
Well, Eddie Strange will be running Lauderdale County from the Bear's Den in Sheffield! Run for cover because scary things will be happening over here!!!
That's a shame.
James Hall should have been appointed the position.
He is more than qualified & would have been a breath of fresh air.

Yes, I can comfirm. Gil Self was appointed yesterday afternoon, by Governor Riley!!!

where's your link ?
It is true - I just spoke with a really good friend who is an attorney! He said it was pretty much a done deal from the beginning!

I was told Gil made a huge campaign contribution ($10,000) to Baxley's opponent in their last race.

Like I said - it is fixing to get bad over here and I hate this very bad. This dude lives 2 different lives. There is more than meets the eye with him.

Not to mention his LACK of connections to druggies and drunks and people who refuse to pay their child support!!!!!!!!!!!!
James Hall is a good guy!
I just posted in News. Yes, I did support Judge Hall, but the article says he will run for circuit or district judge in the near future.

I don't know Mr. Self, but I do wish him well.
I agree, James Hall is a good guy, so is Gil Self. Either one of them would have been a good choice. Mr. Self was appointed, so let's give him a chance before we start thorwing stones at him.
I bet if you put them all in a bag and shook it real good , they'd all fall out the same .

Your right, they all suck.I hate all forms of law and restraint.Let me be me man!
Eddie Strange is already issuing warnings in the name of Gil Self. This is probably more of a reflection on Eddie because for all I know, Mr. Self may not even know he does this but I intend to let him know.
