Just how much $$$$$ is Wal-Mart paying up front for the Cloverdale Rd location. This council talks jobs and how many jobs this will bring. I worked for Wal-Mart for 12 years and the wife for 15 years. FOLKS!!!!! ATTENTION!!!!! This is minimum wage positions being offered. Also Wal-Mart no longer hires full time employees. It is sad how our kids and grandkids have to move to Huntsville, Nashville and etc. to get a job. Just stop shopping Walmart and do not be a red neck. Aldi's and Hometown are much better and just wait till Publix opens the doors.

You can't be serious? Just exactly how does shopping at Wal-mart make anyone a redneck?

Working for minimum wage would be better than these people that lay on their butt & live off the goverment.

BTW, if Wal-mart is such a terrible place, why in the world did you & your wife work there for so long?

AMEN to that!

I could say that everyone that shopped at Family Dollar is a redneck or that they are trailer trash but that don't make it so.

The air must be mighty thin up on that mountain, MountainMan.  It seems to have affected your brain.  You and MountainMama sure put in a lot of time there in that place you have so much contempt for.  Were you a greeter at Walmart?  If so, did you say something like this to patrons entering the store:  "Well, hey there, you rednecks, we're s**** glad yew decided to shop at Walmart!  The chawin' terbaccy and snuff are right over this way"

WalMart has changed many things over the years but they do so to keep competitive with other businesses and to continue to make money for their investors.  In other words stay in business and keep at the top if possible.  I don't know about the hiring practices of WalMart these days but even if they are Part time jobs they are having no problem finding people to fill them.  That's a function of the overall economy.  If there are better paying jobs, with better benefits, then people will leave WalMart for them and to compete WalMart will have to up the ante and do better.  I have friends who work for WalMart and love their job and company.  WalMart was also one of the first companies to concentrate on USA Made products.  While that is no longer the case that may or may not be WalMart's fault for it's going to be a mighty limited and small store that carries only made in USA products today.

I'm sure there are negatives with WalMart as there are with any large corporation but as successful as they are they must be doing something right.  As for the "redneck" comment you might as well say everyone in Florence and the Shoals area are Rednecks for I would say 99% of the people shop at WalMart in any given month.  That percentage may be high but I'd say a majority of people do and those who don't do so because it's always so crowded that they go to where they can get in and out faster and park closer.  Hence WalMart's still doing things right and controlling the market.  Also must be a lot of Rednecks around the world because last time I read about it WalMart was also the leading retailer worldwide.  All I believe the WalMart will do by locating out Cloverdale Road is up the property prices along Cloverdale as more businesses locate out here in order to take advantage of those crowds that come to WalMart.  It will create more jobs, temporary and/or permanent that are not here now.  That's just my opinion however.

I don't know why mm worked at Walmart for so long, but perhaps he tried to get better employment? Perhaps being a Walmart employee held him back? It's true they do not hire full time and offer no insurance to temp employees. Will it help the economy? Maybe, but it's hardly a Navistar.

Tuscaloosa has one Walmart, and now we will have two--mainly because of Publix I would  venture.

True story: I visited the Target pharmacy late in August. It was tax free weekend and the store was jammed. I commented on it to the pharmacist who replied, "Yeah, and it's a Walmart crowd."

Even the suburbs are still considered tuscaloosa. Saying they only have one means nothing. I can go to three around here, easy driving distance, and there will soon be a fourth up 72 even closer. Same with the publix stores. Three publix within easy driving distance. There's a target four miles from me. I don't know why people fight the walmarts. Don't like them, don't go. I don't go that often because i love publix.

Ahem, anyone out there from Killen want to say you live in Florence? Yes, it's easier for me to get to the Muscle Shoals Walmart than the one in Florence. That doesn't mean Florence has two...yet. That's just a statement of fact. People may call it Tuscaloosa, but it's out of their city limits and uses a different mailing distinction.

Beg to differ. I took my info from a group opposed to Walmart, but in checking the info, I see only one listed for Tuscaloosa--on Skyland Blvd. There certainly may be some in surrounding smaller towns.

Another is in Northport -- right across the river. Northport is the second largest municipality in the county.

1) If there are more unemployed than positions, you take what you can get -- even if you have to drop to the bottom of the barrel to get it. Some will still be left wanting.

2) If there were better paying jobs, with better benefits, and they preferred that over Walmart, then they wouldn't be at Walmart in the first place.

Think! Think!
