Janet Hasson Fires Caryn McBride

The Rockland County Times has learned that Rockland County Chief Editor Caryn McBride is among the casualties of the recent purge of 17 journalists  and 26 total staffers at the Gannett-owned Journal News newspaper.

McBride gained fame earlier this year for her involvement in the Journal News gun map fiasco. Police reports indicated McBride had called the Clarkstown Police Department to notify them of torrents of angry phone calls and letters the newspaper received following the publication of the map.

The Rockland editor said she felt threatened by the complaints, but local police did not agree a credible threat against the safety of employees of the newspaper existed. Unsatisfied, McBride and other executives decided to hire armed guards to protect their property, causing an uproar due to the perceived hypocrisy of the avowed anti-gun editors hiring gun-toting men.

The decision to lay off McBride was made by Journal News Publisher and CEO Janet Hasson. The fate of  Editor-in-Chief CynDee Royle and other editors that approved the gun map have not been made public. McBride had been with the newspaper approximately three years.

Layoffs took place company-wide for the Journal News parent Gannett. There is no indication the gun map played a role in the layoffs, however the controversy may have had an effect on the Journal News’ bottom line as multitudes of subscribers bailed on the daily paper.

What about age restrictions, or can they be carried in the statehouse, or courtrooms, or schoolhouses?  Why can those be restricted?

A person with a concealed carry permit can take a gun in a schoolhouse.  Statehouses and courtrooms are guarded by armed personnel already.  On my property, I can do pretty much what I want.

Hoob I don't believe you can carry a gun into a school ;even with a permit.  I wouldn't let you in if I were at the door.

You need to read the law before responding.  There's not much you could do if I wanted to get thru the door, other than be a good rug to wipe my feet before entering.

Considering almost all mass shooters come from democrat/liberal homes or are registered democrats themselves, I'm fine with banning democrats from owning guns.  I'm sure once the law is passed, they'll honor it and never pick up a gun again.  Paper is a wonderful gun deterrent.

Hey QD - you might want to check your facts on this statement.  The information below is from an incident that occurred in 2012.  The 'legislation' that was proposed by McCutcheon was never passed.  My understanding of the new law that just went into effect is that it is illegal to carry concealed in a school where SRO's are present, but they are not present in every school.  Im still waiting for some confirmation on that though.

Either way, your comment was incorrect - it was definitely NOT illegal to carry inside a school with a CCW permit before this new law was passed:

Officials here say they were "shocked" to learn recently that Alabama law does not bar anyone with a permit from carrying a concealed weapon onto a school campus......

......According to state law (Sec.13A, 11-72c), it is legal to take a loaded gun on to school property providing the person has a permit.

While federal law does prohibit taking a concealed weapon on a campus, Muncey advised school officials it would be relatively futile to turn to federal authorities, "because there was no intent to do bodily harm," one of the stipulations in the federal law.
