(CNS News.com) – An anonymous Kurdish church leader, a convert to Christianity, said in an interview with World Watch Monitorthat while living in makeshift refugee camps in Northern France, he was told by Muslims in one of the camps, ‘you are Kurdish, and you are a Christian? Shame on you,’ and ‘We will tell the Algerians and Moroccans to kill you.’ He also reported that in a camp outside Dunkirk, “they [set] fire [to] my tent.”
The Kurdish convert, who did not want to be identified, “spent nine months living in camps outside the French cities of Calais and Dunkirk,” according to World Watch Monitor.
The Christian told the group, which reports particularly on the persecution of Christians around the world, that Kurdish Muslims in both camps threatened him.
“In Calais, the smugglers [saw] my cross [round my neck], and said: ‘You are Kurdish and you are a Christian? Shame on you,’” he said. “I said, ‘Why? I’m in Europe, I’m free, I’m in a free country.’ They said, ‘No, you are not free, you are in the Jungle. The Jungle has Kurdish rule here – leave this camp.’ The smugglers were from inside the camp, and were Kurdish. They said to me, ‘We will tell the Algerians and Moroccans to kill you.’”
Life in Kurdistan had been very bad for the convert as well. He said he was arrested and beaten for preaching in the streets.
“In the mosque the imams talked about me, and my father, and my little brother, who became a Christian too... The imam talked about us – ‘they are kafir [unbelievers], they have to die,’ from the stage, into the mosque microphone. My father [a Muslim] was filled with shame,” he said. “They were taught bad things about us in the mosque: ‘The Christians are kafir.’ Of course, they [also] say you are slaves to Israel, to the American people.”
He is now seeking asylum in Britain, rather than remaining in France, citing the gruesome July murder of Rev. Jacques Hamel at the hands of men who had pledged allegiance to ISIS as something that has frightened him.
World Watch Monitor reported in October about the difficult living conditions for Christian refugees in German shelters.
They reported that “a recently arrived refugee was confronted with these words written on the wall in his refugee shelter: ‘The time has come to cut off the heads of all non-believers!’”“I was shocked! In Iran this may happen, but I never expected such a thing to happen in Germany. This has shattered my trust,” he told World Watch Monitor.
World Watch Monitor also highlighted a report by Open Doors Germany, Action on Behalf of Christians and the Needy, the Central Council of Oriental Christians in Germany and the European Mission Society, called, ‘Lack of protection for religious minorities in Germany.’ It describes the findings of a survey of asylum-seekers, detailing Christian refugees’ accounts of intimidation.
The survey was of 743 affected Christian refugees from all but one German state in February through September 2016 and showed 615 (83%) reporting multiple assaults; 314 (42%) death threats; 416 (56%) violent assaults; and 44 (6%) sexual assaults.
Ninety-one percent (674) of those who responded to the survey said assaults were committed by Muslim fellow refugees. Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson highlighted a similar problem of Christians afraid to go to U.N. refugee camps for fear of persecution in a testimony before Congress in May.
In an earlier testimony, Anderson cited a ministry director who reported that “in United Nations camps in Jordan, Islamist gangs bring the same practices that refugees have fled: coercion to join terrorist groups such as the Islamic State (ISIS), conflict between militias on both sides of the civil war, and the criminal buying and selling of females as sex slaves.”
