You’ve heard it a million times since Nov. 8: It’s unfair that Hillary Clinton lost the election, because she beat Donald Trump in the popular count by 3 million votes. She would be president, the argument goes, if it weren’t for an outdated, outmoded electoral college system that just thwarted the will of the majority 66 million voters who backed her.

But none of that is true. In fact, the electoral college worked exactly as it was intended. The Founders set up the system specifically to prevent a few population centers from ruling the entire country, similar to the way they set up the House and Senate so that populous states wouldn’t have outsized power over less-populated states.

One set of numbers in particular really drives this point home. Trump won the vote in 2,626 counties nationwide, while Clinton won the vote in just 487 counties. That’s a stunningly low number, even for a Democrat. When former President Barack Obama won 689 counties nationwide in 2009, he set a record for the lowest number of counties won by a winning presidential candidate.

Half of Clinton’s popular vote lead over Trump came from 1.5 million voters in the five counties that make up New York City.

Indeed, many of the counties Clinton won are in affluent urban areas on the West and East coasts, which is how she can come out on top in the popular vote with so few counties on her side. Trump’s counties, on the other hand, are in large part found in less-populated and often relatively poor, rural areas comprising the rest of the country. In terms of land-area, Trump won the vast majority of the country, as The New York Times illustrates in two amazing maps that break up the country by the vote.

Trump managed to flip more than 200 counties that voted for Obama in 2012, by the way, Clinton flipped just 30 counties that went Republican in 2012. The difference highlights how winning a U.S. presidential election is more about plurality votes than it is about net votes.

If Democrats got their wish and the election were decided by the popular vote, the result would be that people in very small and relatively affluent regions would effectively rule over the rest of the country. Presidential candidates wouldn’t need to make a single campaign stop outside of the urban hubs on the coast in order to win elections. The voices of citizens in the rest of the country, who have different concerns and incomes and perspectives, could be downplayed, ignored and effectively silenced.

This is exactly the kind of scenario the Founders were working to avoid when they designed the electoral college. The system forces candidates to more widely consider the interests of all Americans, rather than only zero in on the interests of a few populations scattered on the coast.

"That's why we're seeing all the demonstrations in urban areas, the rest of country is just working." - WELL HOW COULD THIS BE IF OBAMA'S ECONOMY WAS SO BAD? you can't have it both ways you silly brainwashed fools - just like liberals are "wussy snowflakes" and "dangerous rioters" at the same time - you look so stupid for real

I really enjoy listening to you two plus crash, whining with the
snot bubbles dripping from your noses like the brain dead
anti Americans commies that you are. The beast lost for one
reason, she's hated by the voters of the entire country, not
just the coastal clump areas of thugs, illegal thugs and
sanctuary city thugs. Be proud of your wussy snowflakes,
dangerous rioters, welfare cheats and largest supplier of HIV
in the America's.

You also notice that many of the demonstrations are at College campuses and led by or attended by vast numbers of College students yet when interviewed and questioned about basic Civics type questions about our Nation or our Government they fail miserably at answering them.   None seemed to know just how many Justices there are on the Supreme Court nor could they name any of them or recognize them when presented with photos of the Justices.  Their lack of knowledge about the Supreme Court or 3rd Branch of Government was only surpassed by their lack of knowledge about the two other branches of Government nor could they name them.

Parents are paying hundreds of thousands of Dollars to educate their children at these institutions of higher learning but then when some of those that are questioned identify themselves as professors at these same colleges and we see they are equally as idiotic then we can only surmise that the kids are learning well from these tenured professors and the lack of education falls upon those who allowed these professors to work their way into the positions they hold as it is.

I can remember one television show, about people who offer to move people or participate in transport/shipping wars which featured a newly hired professor at some prestigious, Southern Californian College, possibly Berkley, and the person who won the bidding war to move this "walking loon" or "village idiot" had several interactions with the person only to reveal a real level of potential mental illness of this "newly hired professor".   I honestly couldn't believe that this guy was actually going to be teaching at this school but sure enough that's where he was moved to and his earthly goods, mostly yard junk, was dropped off at.  This "walking around idiot" is actually going to be teaching kids at a prestigious Southern California College for some class that is either psychologically oriented or possibly philosophy but either way a class at a college where people pay six figures for a finished education.

Our future, as far as College Students taught by people like this guy, is truly as dim as the intelligence portrayed by this guy on the moving/transport show a guy whose main goal in life is to acquire as many copies of a certain TV Show as exist, or at least that's what I remember of the show that we watched.

America's spoiled socialist children behaved like the old socialist movements of the past during last week's Berkeley riot. I'm glad they obviously never read a book in their lives or they would have thought about tossing them on the fires in the streets as the nationalist socialists did 80 years ago.
