FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – Police and the Lauderdale County Drug Task Force are declaring war on heroin and those who are selling it.

In the last 10 days the city has seen an alarming rise in the number of deaths from the drug.

“We’ve got to put an end to this because it is killing folks.”

Tough words by Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler, but words he said the public needs to hear for good reason.

In the last 10 days in the city of Florence, Chief Tyler said four medical calls have been received for heroin overdoses.

Of the four, three people have died.

“In this particular case, if this is a new batch of heroin and it is just unusually dangerous, its killing folks and we need to get the message out,” stated Tyler. “It’s not just the police department; it’s going to take loved ones, family and friends to get to the bottom of this.”

Tim Glover with the Lauderdale County Drug Task Force said the heroin trade is something rather new to the Shoals area.

He said it wasn’t until 2013 that the drug started showing up.

“Either it is being cut with something that is more poisonous and dangerous, or people are not used to the potency of the drugs. So either it is cut and weak or its potent and people are not used to the strength,” explained Glover.

And Glover added unlike most other drugs, heroin crosses the line of all economic classes and is not discriminatory.

Florence Police and the Lauderdale County Drug Task Force is asking for family or friends of those addicted to heroin to reach out to their agencies so they can shut-down the heroin trade in the Shoals before it gains anymore ground.

They already write scripts to dope heads.  In the form of opiate based pain pills.  I refuse to use the term addict, because the idiots taking that stuff do it to themselves.  I know this because I have a dope head in my family, and making it easier for him to get his dope ain't gonna help his wife or kids.  However controlling the manufacturing process might.

Abuse of prescription narcotics is a vicious cycle, and as a result has caused Drs to watch more closely their despensing of such.  It has caused the patients to adhere to standards set by the Drs because of the requirements placed on them.  Patients may have drug test to check for things other than what they are prescribed and the levels of what they are prescribed,  or random call in to office for a pill count to see what amount they have. if they don't "pass" any of these, they get kicked from their Dr.  By the same token if the Drs appear by their records or methods to be careless in how they are treating and dispensing the narcotics, they get shut down and license pulled.  This results in a patient losing their Dr until they can find a new one, which leads to not being able to get their meds, which depending on the bodies dependance of such, may cause sickness from withdrawals, and possibly death from the sudden stop.  This leads many to the next source. The dealer.  Where do dealers get the drugs?  People who legally get them but don't really take them so they sell them to make money (un-employment ya know) people who actually need them but need money worse, people who steal them and sell to dealers or trade them for other drugs, or sometimes and often, a crooked Dr.   So, you look closer to the issue now and what do you see as the culprit?  Money and dependance.  Like Huey Lewis sang, "I want a new drug", thats what we need. One that is non-addictive, that works, and can get over the counter.  Oh, but there's that evil root the drug companies, doctors, dealers, police drug forces, and government loves....MONEY.

Still, it is a victimless crime. Who cares ?

Not victimless crime as addicts steal from people to support their habit.   Also who is going to pay for the scripts written to druggies?
