The Lauderdale County Board voted to give Mr. Valentine a significant raise last night, making his salary easily surpassing the $100,000 mark.

The funny thing is that earlier in the week Mr. Valentine send out memos on how to save money during the proration and even outlined that if computers were cut off at night, it could save the school system $45,000 over the course of the year. I guess we know now why he wanted the computers off so that money could go straight into his pocket!!

Teachers have been informed that most non-tenured teachers will NOT be hired back next year due to the worst Proration since the early 1960's. How does Mr. Valentine handle these teachers, that are single moms and are trying to make a living, fire them, and put himself up for a RAISE!!!

Here's another interesting fact!!! Two board memebers did not show up for the vote last night (TH and JF). He needed 3 votes to have his raise approved. The deciding vote was given by Ms. Cornelius, which oddly enough came on the same night her SON was going to be reccomended to get the Administrator job at Anderson Junior High School.

Let us all think back..... Mr. Valentine ran his campaign on EXPERIENCE!!! Mr. Cornelius was/is going to be reccomended for the Principal job at Anderson with NO EXPERIENCE, but I guess we can overlook it since his mother was able to cast the deciding vote to get Mr. Valentie a HUGE RAISE!!!

Several groups have approaced Mr. Valentine over the last several months inquiring about getting a raise (bus drivers, lunchroom personnel, coaches, band directors). All have been told the same thing. "We are going into proration and if we give you a raise, then we would have to give everybody a raise".

VERY INTERESTING!! My son's school has air conditioners that won't work, toilets that leak and smell, and we can't get those fixed, but I'll bet Mr. Valentine's raise is on his next paycheck!!!

It is such a shame that the same day Mr. Valentine was sworn in as superintendent of Lauderdale County, he was granted this raise. He claims that we should all do what is best for the children of Lauderdale County Schools. We have so many employees that are working extra hours everyday to further our athletic program who are not receiving any money for their work and efforts to better our schools. He owes the people of our county an explanation of why he feels that he is entitled to a pay raise when our schools are having fund raisers to just survive.
If everyone is really sick of this, teachers, bus drivers, lunchroom personnel, custodians, secretaries, book keepers, mechanics, maintenance, coaches, and exspecially parents and grandparents (who will have to provide even toilet paper for our kids to go to the bathroom during this proration) be at the Board meeting Monday Dec.22,08, at 4 P.M. and let's be heard. IT IS TIME WE HAVE A "COME TO JESUS MEETING" WITH THIS BUNCH... THIS IS BS.
Jones or Hill could have did us all a big favor and drew straws to see which one would run! Valentine makes me sick! Just like the Brewer case they'll wait till next year so he'll be vested, then can him. At that point whats the difference he'll milk it for what its worth too

The schools are in bad shape, but hey, they can wait. I need my money now! Let the children suffer! It's great to have such a caring Board, if you call it that!

Excuse me now while I go PUKE!!!!
Well the total he will receive will be 112,000.00...if he truly cares for the children he should tell the board members and all Lauderdale employees he will not take this money. That he would be glad to wait until everyone can get a raise before he receives one. Let's see what kind of a man he really is...put the children and teachers first...and don't forget us(the parents) that will have to bring even more stuff to school next year. My child better have toliet paper and soap in the bathroom.
This is indeed a disgrace! Check out the rest of the salaries of the sperintendents in the area. "Grace" has a lot of company! Salaries also include a car which I assume goes home and everywhere else! This school board whould be recalled. They did not have to grant the raise. He could have quit if he did not like his salary.

I thought the same thing. If either Hill or Jones had dropped out, Mr. Valentine might have been out of a job.
This is so hard to believe. I can't believe that he would do this. It is a slap in the face to those non-tenured teachers who need to work to provide for their families and who will more than likely lose their jobs. This is a very selfish move. I am very disappointed in the Laud. School board. YOU SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED (that is the ones who backed him on this)!!!!
On the various boards that I have been associated with, the agenda for the up-coming meeting were provided to the board members in advance of the meeting so I knew what issues to expect prior to my attendance. This allowed me time to research some of the issues prior to my vote of support or decline. The proposed agenda was also posted for inspection by the public and advertised as such.

With the availability of the various forms of communication available today, I’m sure that this could and should have been done for all of the school board members, so they knew what to expect during this board meeting.

In the case of the Lauderdale B of E, I wonder if the requirement under the Alabama Sunshine Law for posting the agenda prior to meeting was followed. If not, there may be grounds for a legal challenge to the pay raise for BV as approved by the 3 attending board members, especially since a relative of one of the attending board members were appointed to an administration position.

I would also think that that board member would be required by to remove themselves from voting on such an important issue, due to a conflict of interest, which would mean, a quorum, was not available for that appointment. .

To get to the truth, it will take someone with courage to find out, which excludes many of the local news media.
Stinky -

There was no action taken on filling the "interim" principal position at Anderson last night.

FYI - to all you "concerned citizens" - the Superintendent position for Lauderdale co. was going to get a raise no matter who the person was. It would have been higher than $12,000 if Hill or Jones would have gotten it.

I agree that it looks bad to come in the same week as the proration announcement, but Lauderdale Co. was (and may still be) one of the lowest paid superintendent's in the state.

and to the person with comments about the delay of the G. Brewer situation... the Board has no control over the lawyers delaying it.
Hey sb07? What time did you leave the Board of Education today?? Since you work down there, make sure Mr. Valentine is aware of this forum and hears what the public is saying!!!

That pompus, arrogant, egotistical superintendent!! Who does he think he is? Oh yeah... he is a dictator!!! He can do whatever he wants!! What time is the next meeting? I will be there!! My children deserve better than this.

I still have all of his campaign ads that say "I will do what is best for the students and teachers in Lauderdale County" That's a bunch of bull! It really means.... I will do what is best for Billy Valentine and screw everyone else!!

That raise was only approved by a vote of the school board. It would not have happened if a majority of the board had not voted for it. It would not have happened if it had been voted down.

Are we in a contest to see which Superintendent gets paid the most/least? It should not be an issue. The issue should be, and is, that while faced with laying support personnel and teachers off due to prorationing, our superintendent had been given a 12.5 percent pay raise.

At the expense of our children's education.
Go back to page 1 and read my original post. School superintendents' salaries in AL are a disgrace. The "in-line" comment bears me out! Again don't forget the "family car" often used to get to the barbershop/beauty salon during work hours. I have a friend who says there are no secrets in a small town. Colbert Cty is even more disgraceful because of the unecessary three postions (or four) where one would suffice.
I really enjoy reading the post on this forum, they are very insightful, entertaining, and for the most part helpful, but every once in a while I read one that I have to reply to.

The above statement about Mr. Cornelius is not based on facts. Does he have experienced? Yes as a principal he does, but not as a coach (this seems to be the only qualifications for an administration job in education). I work at the same school EC and have got to know him over the years. He does have experience as a principal but not in this county, or state. He could not get an administration job here (ex coaches were being hired) so he was hired as a principal in Alaska. He was a principal there for a year, so yes he does have experience.
Oh btw before you say I have a problem with coaches, I was one in another system for 3 years, so I have many friends that are coaches. I am just speaking the truth, do a little research and see how many principals are ex coaches.

He actualy has written some very large, 6 figure plus checks in donation to the University.

Back on topic, I have been telling people since the late 80's when "Billy Boy" was a school principle that he is a self-centered, egotistacal, selfish, corrupt, scum-bag. This doesn't surprise me one bit.
This discussion was started because I wanted everyone to be aware of the RAISE our Supeintendent got when PRORATION was announced less than a week ago! (Keep telling your friends and neighbors to read this fourm and respond to it)

Apparently Mr. Valentine felt that his postition was one of the lowest paid in the state.

If this is true, it would only serve to reason because Laud. Co's support personnel, members of EXPO, secretaries, coaches, and band directors are among the lowest paid salaries in the state.

SO.... What does our "great leader" do? He looks out for "numero uno" and give himself a raise!! What about everyone else??

"NO RAISES WILL BE GIVEN THIS YEAR OR NEXT YEAR TO ANYONE!!" direct quote by William Valentine!!

He knew all along he was asking for a raise and needed the extra money to make his pockets bigger (if that is possible.. figuratively and literally)

Any great leader would say, "Let's make sure everyone else is being treated fairly and all of their wages are up to par before I increase my on salary!"

Like I said a great leader would do that...not the "ME ME ME" person we have in charge.

Since someone brought up EC getting the job at Anderson and thought he would be great, this is the same person that had to be called down at an inservice meeting because he was acting like a 5 year old. Maybe he and Sarah Palin can team up and make Alaska better, but we need someone experinced at Anderson.
Lawsuit, Lawsuit, Lawsuit

What about all of the experienced asst. principals that got overlooked for the Anderson job? One had four years exp. and the other with eight years exp. EC has one year in Alaska. Now the board will pay out $50 per child in lawsuit expenses instead of $10 like other systems.

That could buy a whole freaking lot of toilet paper and paper towels, kleenex, etc. Not to mention books, computers, and other things needed.

Billy V is no angel.....the bd of ed is possibly the worst, most corrupt, spiteful group of people in the state.

I would sue their ass off if I were overlooked for a job and they hired and unqualified person
whose mother was on the board. It is cut and dried.

Emmit Jimmar would be gettin a phone call.
No, Emmitt Jimmar is the Uniserve Director for the local AEA chapter. He is who school employess would contact if they had a grievance.
I am not defending V's raise, but usually those things are on a schedule--like after so many years of service, etc. I agree the board could have voted against it due to proration. Just pointing out that pay raises in education are generally scheduled by years served or some other marker.
Yes, he is the Uniserve Director and an attorney and he would be getting a phone call because if I was overlooked for this clown to be hired I would file a grievance that would lead to a lawsuit...

I know people are so eagerly shouting "lawsuit" these days, but think of how frustrating it is for teachers/employees in Lauderdale County that are overlooked because "Mom" or "Dad" or "Uncle" are not associated with the LC BOE. It is the only way to get anyones attention at that place.

Just look at BV's new Secretary. Two women at the Board whom have worked there for 20 something years were overlooked so that one of the principals wives who was not even in the system could be hired. I wouldn't even want to come back to work and look at him everyday.

With that said, let's offer BV the chance to be the hero.. No one else in the area in any job is getting a huge raise. Let's challenge him to take that money and invest it back in the school system. Put in in the technical programs that are about to go under. Some of the kids who are not college bound need these programs, so that they have a skill. I am sure that there are many other areas that could greatly benefit from any amount of donation.
If he had been a man of the students and as good at managing this county -- he would have declined to even let the raise go to a vote and would have had it tabled until another year when the county could actually afford to pay its teachers salaries let alone his raise...but then again, he showed exactly that he is only in this for himself...
