Technology has transformed the traditional schoolyard bully into a much more complicated and sophisticated beast, prompting lawmakers throughout the country to pass anti-harassment laws for public school students.

Alabama is the most recent of 44 states to pass an anti-bullying law, which makes it illegal for students to harass, bully, intimidate, harm or threaten to harm fellow students. The law requires the state's 131 public school districts to pass anti-bullying and harassment policies by July 1.

The days of the school bully taunting classmates and threatening to beat them up for their lunch money have metastasized into full-on bullying campaigns on social networking sites Facebook and MySpace, and in text messages and e-mails, educators and child safety advocates say.

Looks like the use of cell phones during school will change.

How will it change? Do you thinks kids will now be allowed to use them in school?

Actually, in Lauderdale county schools, kids are allowed to have cell phones and use them outside of the classroom. The thought is that if they are allowed to use them at lunch and in between classes, then they will not have a problem of kids using them in class. The people that I have talked to at the schools say it works great.
Rocker, why the hell is it that the school has to take care of everything...how about the &^%$# parents take a step in dealing with their kids?....here's an example of what to say..."Now Little Susie, please don't take your phone to school." No, you dont want to do that, let the teachers deal with the hassel..Who do you think got this cell phone stuff passed? The teachers...RIGHT..they wanted one more headache...while trying to educate these half-wits we send them...get off the educators.... had my say.

That entire post came down to this? I guess bullying only goes on during school hours. Taking away those cell phones is going to magically make all those problems go away.

I guess this ranks right up there with closing all the banks so they never get robbed....

I feel sorry for the poor girl's family in Michigan. She hung herself due to the rumors that were texted around school. And NO.... taken away phones will not cure bullying, but if banning phones will take away avenue that can be used to bully someone.. then yes ban them during school. The girls in Michigan that harassed the girl are going to jail. Their parents should go with them. Parents today worry more about their kids fitting in than raising them.

Now there is some honesty. Cell phones and texting, as related to bullying, are no different than the old 'passing notes' or writting girls phone numbers on the boys bathroom walls below 'for a good time call ______'. While tragic, this is not new. The medium changes, but the hatred and jealousy that breeds bullying stays the same throughout the generations.

What has changed is our acceptance of these things. All too often, when these things happen, parents miss (or ignore) the chance to educate their children and discuss these issues. It has gone by the wayside, along with family meals and game night.

You have the right idea, but you are targeting the wrong thing as being the problem.....

Banning cell phones would cause some parents to complain to our elected folks, and heaven forbid we should "bother" a parent. Many companies are beginning to ban cell phones in the work place. Those companies also require employees to show up on time and do their jobs. What are we teaching in school when we accommodate parents and students? Parents who write the research paper, do the homework, encourage short cuts, and lie about absentences are enabling the children to continue these practices as adults. The school can not compete with parents, but we do not have to bow to the either.
