Technology has transformed the traditional schoolyard bully into a much more complicated and sophisticated beast, prompting lawmakers throughout the country to pass anti-harassment laws for public school students.
Alabama is the most recent of 44 states to pass an anti-bullying law, which makes it illegal for students to harass, bully, intimidate, harm or threaten to harm fellow students. The law requires the state's 131 public school districts to pass anti-bullying and harassment policies by July 1.
The days of the school bully taunting classmates and threatening to beat them up for their lunch money have metastasized into full-on bullying campaigns on social networking sites Facebook and MySpace, and in text messages and e-mails, educators and child safety advocates say.
Looks like the use of cell phones during school will change.
