Caught on tape: Fist fly between neighbors over length of grass

A dispute among Alabama neighbors took a violent turn Wednesday, and TV cameras were rolling the entire time.

It began as an argument over a messy yard in Lauderdale County, Alabama.

Now one of the neighbors may be in bigger trouble.

Wednesday morning a reporter from NBC affiliate WAFF went to talk about a resident's yard that had not been mowed in a year.

When the homeowner arrived shortly after the reporter got there, things went sour.

John Calvery was punched several times by a family member of a resident who lives in the neighborhood.

Fortunately, Calvery was able to get away before he was seriously injured.

It all started with neighbors complaining about his house.

Jeanette Burns, who lives across the street, said, "It's grass growed up, you know 6 to 7 feet high, there is trash all in the yard, junk cars."

Jennifer Burns, another neighbor, said, "It's just not grass, it's bushes, thickets."

Residents were hoping by involving the media, the homeowner would do something about it.

Calvery had an explanation about why the yard isn't kept up.

John Calvery, owner of the home with a messy yard, said, "I work 18 hours a day, have to put up with neighbors like that all the time."

Calvery says he plans to clean up the yard soon.

Calvery said, "I got my tractor fixed, it has been fixed."

After his interview, words were exchanged and Calvery was assaulted in front of TV cameras.

His neighbors say it would all be worth it if something is done about the mess.

Jennifer Burns said, "Just to cut the grass to where it's not a health hazard to kids playing."

Jeanette Burns said, "I hope we'll get some response, you know, they'll clean it up."

Calvery has filed a complaint with the St. Florian Police Department about the altercation.

I think Roofer finally has his moment of fame! Way to whoop up, Roofer!

For anyone outside of Alabama that might run across this posting: Really we aren't all like these toothless idiots. Dang near 5% of us are more or less literate. It's that small majority that makes us all look bad.
Why should he mow his lawn? No home rule in this county--that means he can do as he pleases.

Dogs running free? That's okay also. Pigs in back yard? Hey, way to go. Christmas lights still up? It's a free country. 96.2 political signs in front yard? No harm there (as long as they're for the right candiates).

Remember, folks, home rule just encourages a lack of individuality.

Gofish...Your such an Idiot. Why is it you must keep on with your High school drama? I haven't said anything to you. And Katybug is correct. I DO NOT live in Lauderdale co. Besides my business just happens to be none of yours. Actually I wish you would check into Riverbend for a short stay so someone over there could help you deal with your unstableness. It's like you sit around and look for something to mouth off about to try to insult me when actually, all your doing is making yourself look childish. This behavior is in the same family as someone that reads every post to find spelling errors and grammical mistakes. So, take your ritalin and go on into your job today on court street so no one else finds out who you actually are. I AM THE ROOFER AND I ALSO APPROVE THIS MESSAGE.
I'm gonna get bashed for this one, but here goes.

This is what is wrong with society today. No one is willing to help their neighbor. Oh, just report him instead of asking if we can help him.

In my opinion if they wanted it mowed that bad, maybe they should have done it themselves. He may have appreciated it and kept it up afterwards....

That's just my thought on this subject....

When I left Memphis there was a man living there that called himself "Prince Mongo". He ran for mayor every election cycle. Claimed to be from another planet, when called to court, he would show up in a loin cloth with a neckless of rats ( I think plastic /rubber) and "bless" the court room with "magic" dust.
Well, at any rate, he lived in a VERY nice neighborhood,Central Ave East of Memp State, and let his yard go, piling up lumber, and assorted junk.
His neighbors took him to court (see above), but he would always wiggle out of the trouble. Finally , the neighbors build a 12 foot high fence all around his property.
Last time I drove by, it was still in that condition. Goes to show if you are a little nuts, and have lots of money, you can get by with about anything.

In my neighborhood, the association will cut your grass for you if it gets too high and send you the bill. If you don't pay it, they can put a lean on your property and take you to court.

I usually cut mine every other week, sometimes weekly depending on rain. Of course, my neighbors on both sides cut theirs twice a week or more. So even though mine is only a couple or three inches high, it looks like I let it "growed up".
This is as bad as the interviews you always see on TV after a tornado comes through. News crews invariably find the ugliest, most inbred son of a gun, with only two teeth in his head, tobacco stuffed in his cheek and wearing a greasy feed store cap who says the same thing, "Yep, it were just like I seen on TV, sounded jes' lak a train comin' over th' trailer. It dun carried off my pickem up truck too."

It really is no wonder people from other parts of the country, who have never been to the South, hold southerners in such low regard. With videos like this as their only reference point, I can understand why they think we all go barefoot, have bad hygiene, ride around on tractors and marry our siblings. The homeowner AND his neighbors should all be ashamed of themselves.

I miss country living. My husband and i both cut the grass....he had his half of the yard and i had mine.
I once put up a temp fence, opened the gate and let my horse take care of my half. Hubby decided to do the same, but his half of the yard had his truck parked in it and he left his windows rolled down....his horse decided the seat upholstery was better than the grass....

Reasonable for one person may not be reasonable for someone else.
And working 18 hours a day is a dang good excuse.....some things are more important than mowing the grass.

Prince Mongo made some strange pizza, too. He and Mrs. Romine must be related.
Does anybody remember that guy who lived in Rivermont and drove the fairly decent car that was totally filled inside with trash? Except for one teeny tiny spot right at the front windshield over the steering wheel? I mean, it was packed. used to scare me to death to be driving on Pickwick behind him or in front of him. I can't imagine that he's survived this long without killing himself or others by driving along like Mr. Magoo peering through a 5"x5" clear spot.

Without knowing the whole story, it is hard to tell, but I'm with you. Some people just are horrible neighbors, and need a little education on what the word means.

I think it was interesting that the complainers put forth the idea that the high grass was dangerous to their children. How? Were they letting their children run loose in the neighborhood, trespassing on this guy's property?

I am not that picky on when the grass gets cut, but in this instance this could be a home for snakes, rats and all sorts of "wildlife". It was not a little high, it was a forest!.....

That would definately piss me off.

And you've got something against living in a forest? If it is wild enough for rats and snakes, it is also wild enough for owls. My neighborhood is fairly neatly kept, and we still have plenty of "wildlife" including raccoons, foxes, owls, mice, snakes, lizards, spiders, ants, squirrels, rabbits, etc. etc.

If I were the guy and the news showed up to interview me, I'd tell them how mean-spirited, inbred and nosy my "neighbors" are, and that I'm living a "green" lifestyle, helping our planet survive. I'd explain that my yard isn't overgrown, it has merely gone natural. Much better for our furry friends, the water supply that my "neighbors" drink from, and the air that they breath.

I live in a neighborhood, so they are picky. But I love my dad's place, he's in the woods, creek, barn and the whole deal. BUT, he has to bushhog and clear out stuff so when the kids play over there they dont have places within an acre or so that snakes etc. will build homes. Its pretty much common sense to keep your house presentable in a subdivision. If you dont like it, do like my dad did, buy you about 20 acres and sit down in the middle of it.
Big Grin
We never gave a thought to how high the grass was or the possibility of snakes and stuff when we were little. If we'd seen wildlife it would've thrilled us and we probably would've worried the poor creature to death trying to catch it, as about a million little lizards would tell you if they were still alive. I can't imagine somebody actually bushhogging us a place to play. That would've taken away the kudzu vines that were our forts and tree houses.

STI, sometimes kids just need to get back to their roots and run through the jungle!

The dogs watch the creek for snakes and stuff, pretty protective. The kids and their friends catch crawfish, have a clubhouse in a tree, ride four wheelers, have a "garden" they planted, catch lizards and frogs. (well thats the boy, not the girl)LOL.

My mom has told us about growing up in Loretto, TN. How they would jump out of the water quickly if they saw a snake and then her and her sisters would jump back in when it was gone. BUT, we grew up on concrete. So I am glad my kids have the best of both worlds. Lots of outdoor time, minus the poison oak and snakes. I know they are deprived...... Big Grin
