Letter to editor brings Secret Service visit

An elderly man who wrote in a letter to the editor about Saddam Hussein's execution that "they hanged the wrong man" got a visit from Secret Service agents concerned he was threatening President Bush.

When I was in college, a student sent a letter to Johnson saying he must stop the war "or else". He was paid a visit by the FBI as a result, and quizzed as to what he ment. He told them that "or else I won't vote for him".

Hopefully, the arrogant Bush admin. now has some checks on it with the current congress. Lets hope they use that power.

Yeah, but trying to arrest a 14 yr old girl in California because she said she didn't like what Bush was doing with the war is stupid. More focus needs used elsewhere instead of going through MySpace looking for crap like the FBI did with this girl. I am glad that now the legal wire tapping has been made illegal again.

What part of "ANY possibility of a threat towards a President" don't you understand?
So, 3 out of 5 Americans do not agree or like the things that the President is doing and voice their opinion as stated in the Constitution. I said nothing about a threat there cod. That gives the right for the Secret Service to hunt down millions of people and put them in jail because they disagree with the President? Do you live in Russia or what?

Even though I am NOT a Bush fan, I have to agree with this comment. He is our President, and anything threatening him should be taken seriously.

How right you are with this one... back in MY day and age, boys (not girls) just fought after school, using fists. Then next day or so they were friends again. What goes on in our schools and with our youth in today's time PAYS for them to be check out for threats!!! Especially against an elected official.

Man, please chill out.. no one said you couldn't DISAGREE with what is going on in today's politics. In fact, I disagree with a LOT that is going on. Disagreeing is NOT a threat.
Of course, Komrade, don't you live here in mother Russia?

This whole thread is about threats towards a President, implied or expressed, and the Secret Service's response to them. If your post had nothing to do with threats, it's on the wrong thread...start one of your own about people who get to meet the Secret Service without threatening the President. BTW, a little stretching the facts never hurts.....I doubt that the few Secret Service agents (remember they are just a branch of the Treasury Department) have time to jail "millions of people and put them in jail" regardless of whether they disagree with the President or not.

And then there's this........

You know if we had some parents that HAD a backbone, none of the things happening today would happen at all. But no, I can't whip my kid because that would hurt their feelings. I am sure you are one of these who had his way and threatened his parents with abuse, abuse.

Grow up and read the Constitution. Or did you have to in your school?

What has this got to do with the subject on hand? My surviving parent is 70 years old, and can still stomp my frail tail. And I've been legally "grown up" for almost 30 years now....and my kids got disciplined when they needed it...and I don't mean a "time out".

Did you learn to argue in the 1st grade, where "it ain't fair" was an acceptable debating point? That doesn't work in the real world. Articulate your point, stay within the subject matter, and I'll be glad to debate with you in a friendly manner.

A few years ago, our youth taught us OLDER people a NEW lesson on life, and that was that they WERE capable of obtaining weapons and carrying out threats... and they were capable of KILLING each other..

So why should we a-s-sume that a 14 year old would NOT do anything just because they are 14... Even at 14, we have learned that they can and will carry out a violent act. We have to be careful of EVERY age now days... sad huh?

ANY threat against ANY elected official, especially the President should be met with swift investigation and if warranted even jail time.

Sps, that was sarcasm that DKN, was using.

I agree with most the replies here. Whether I like the President or not, he is still our leader and as such should be protected from any threats. It does seem extreme to search an 81 year old or a 14 yr. old, but they have to make sure those threats aren't serious.

Gavrilo Princip was 19 at the time he assassinated Arch Duke Ferdinand, starting World War I. Lee Harvey Oswald was 24 at the time he killed President Kennedy. Charles Whitman was 25 when he went up into Austin's University of Texas tower and killed 15 and wounded 31 more. Charles Julius Guiteau was 40 at the time he shot President Garfield. Leon Czolgosz was 28 when he shot President McKinley.

Assassins span all ages, cultures and nationalities. The age of a person is not a determining factor as to whether they will become an assassin or not.

Eeeeek. I guess I better start packing for my run for the border, I am well past 14, and I have been saying I don't like what Bush is Doing to BUSH VIA MAIL. All My representatives in Congress by Mail, E mail, Petition, telephone, and in person on a couple of occasions. IF THEY ARE ARRESTING PEOPLE FOR THAT, I AM UP THE CREEK.
