Reminds me of a joke. A man called 911 and told them he thought his wife was dead. They came and did indeed pronounce her dead. As they were taking her out they bumped into a tree and she sat up straight and began berating her husband for thinking/wanting her dead.  A couple of years later the husband makes another 911 call and tells them he thinks his wife is dead. They tell him that help is on the way and he can stay on the phone with them until it gets there.  He says he's sorry he can't stay on the phone, he has to go outside and cut down a tree.

As for the bell above the coffin, Edgar Allan Poe specified that in his will. He was terrified of being buried alive.  As for his irony, he died in a city away from his home and no one knew of his wish.

A lot of premature burials happened in those days.  'Doctors' were still trepanning and using leeches fa cryin' out loud.

 

Many death pronouncement mistakes were made during epidemics and so arose the fear of being buried alive. Surgeons and barbers were usually one and the same in the 19th century.

 

Lotsa neat contraptions were dreamed up to try to fix this problem.

You are bordering on the New Age, or world religion, idea of reincarnation if you believe anyone can return from the dead.  Yes, Jesus Christ rose from the dead.   He is God.  Yes, He and His disciples raised the dead in the 30 AD time period.  These were special cases to bring people to faith in their Messiah -- before the Bible was available, as God's full revelation to man, to teach us about our Savior and His "free gift" of eternal life.

 

According to Hebrews 9:27, "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment."    As we are told in Philipians 1:23, "But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better." 

 

We also read, in Acts 7:56,  "And he (Stephen) said, 'Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.'"

 

So, unless God the Father and Jesus Christ are both in purgatory -- no one is in purgatory.  Therefore, from the Bible, purgatory is not real.   And, no one comes back from the dead.  From "near death" -- yes.  From death -- no.

one raised from the dead, other people were also raised from the dead.

 

Don't quote the Bible to God, he doesn't need your input to work with the people

as he sees necessary. You don't know the meaning of Heb. 9:27 or the other

reading. You're saying God doesn't work to bring people to him after the

Bible was written. If you want to call them special cases, fine, but they happen

every day. You think you can dictate what God can and can't do because you believe

the Bible tells you that???

 

Purgatory is a fact and the son of man standing by God doesn't shot it down.

It's been here long before Jesus and will be here until the last soul

enters heaven.

Please show us, in the Bible, where you find purgatory and/or reincarnation.  Yes, Jesus Christ and His immediate disciples raised people from the dead.  However, just as there are no more prophets (John the Baptist being the last) -- there is no more "raising from the dead."   Why?  It is not needed.  God has given us His full revelation in His Written Word, the Bible.  The Bible is quite sufficient to lead us to salvation and to guide us, with the Holy Spirit's help, in our daily Christian walk.

 

So, no need for an imaginary purgatory nor a New Age or world religion reincarnation.

 

Vic, you seem to be like many folks I have met -- wanting to follow Jesus Christ -- but, still wanting to keep one foot in the paranormal or mystical world, hoping it will show them the future.   The Bible already shows us the future.  In the Bible we see a future of eternal life in the presence of God -- or we see an eternal life void of the presence of God.  You get to choose.  However, those of you who want to straddle the fence of Christian faith and the world of mystical mumbo jumbo may have a hard time getting both feet into the right place at the end.
