This is a true story. It happened so long ago I am fuzzy on all the details but..

The block across the street from The Grant had been cleared. Lucille's Grill was gone,Young's welding wasn't there. While driving down 1st street we noticed cars stopped and a large crowd gathered on Nashville ave. People were standing behind their cars. This was during the time when Warren Ay**** was Police Chief.

I and about 75 to 100 people witnessed a sheffield police officer (a rookie) in the space between the Grant and the building next to it. The rest of the policemen were behind the Grant. The rookie was firing his pistol into the basement of the hotel while the rest of the officers watched from behind the hotel. You could clearly hear the sounds of two weapons being fired. The one from inside sounded like probably a 22.

Finally one of the officers brought the rookie a bazooka looking thing and he fired teargas into the basement. After a few minutes the officer kicked open a door and entered the basement. you could hear several gunshots then the officer came back out and called to the others.

An ambulance arrived and put a body on the gurney and covered it with a sheet. There were several bloody spots on the sheets.

Next day our local newspaper reported the SUICIDE of a long time resident of the Grant Hotel. I can't remember the mans name but his nickname was Hawk.

The police officer was off the force in just a few months after that and worked at the Zippy Mart at the corner of west Montgomery and Hook street.
