According to Evans and Meades Map of the City of Florence at City Hall the Hotel Reeder was where Brinley Brothers is now. There was an alley on the West side of the building. The buildings West of the alley, where Bunch and James are now, are only two stories tall. But they do have the same features/store front which can cause the confusion.

Sorry, but I was curious about it myself and made a trip over to City Hall to look at the map. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll try to scan a copy of it and post it.
I don't know where I was eating them but the crab cakes at the Reeder were some of the best crab cakes I have ever put in my mouth. They were on the regular plate and completely affordable. This was in 1959. We ate in the restaurant pretty regularly. Forgive me for going foodie, but the best shrimp were the huge ones Melvin fried at the hotel in Sheffield(name?). Or was it just the Sheffield Hotel?

You and Ron White are right "Original Bama" you can't fix stupid, but if you are meanig that I'm stupid for thinking that the Reeder was where I say it was I must quote Forret Gump and remind you "Stupid is as stupid does"
Ummm dude, or dudette, which ever applies. "You can't fix stupid".... Ron White is my signature line. It is always at the bottom of every post i make. That wasnt a reference directly to you, but it can be.

The Hotel Reeder was at 216 East Tennessee Street, on the other side of the street from the yellow cab stand (now parking lot for church) there was a barber shop Graham & Son Piano and seems like a couple of more storefronts before you got to Wood. Evidently Ron has given up before me!

Graham was in the green building where they do weaves now.
If you turn left off Hatch Blvd onto Montgomery Avenue in Sheffield and go towards the railroad tracks, the Hotel Grant was in either the last group of buildings on the right just before you get to the tracks or the block before that. I was working up the street (toward Hatch Blvd) when it burned down but cant' quite remember exactly where it was, just know it was down toward the tracks from where I worked on the other side of Montgomery Avenue.

I think you are referring to the Negley (sp?) Hotel where the utility dept is now. My mom worked at Sammy's Cellar and the Shanty both (was at the Shanty for about 35 years). I remember going there to eat... the Rebel Room, the big jukebox....
My Daddy was manager at the Western Union and he used to take coffee breaks at the Negley......one of his co-workers lived at the hotel so in Feb. '64 aour family came to town to watch the Beatles on Ed Sullivan.......our t.v. reception wasn't good enough to trust back then........like I said back on the first page of this the Reeder was on the south side of Tennessee where Brindley Bros. is now

have you heart the tales about kate nelson at the negley?

I've heard that before Charles married, he frequented the parlor house regularly.

Also, there's a noted letter from Lorena Hickok to Eleanor Roosevelt that was written on Negley stationary while she was staying in Florence.

I can't find out what happened to Charles' wife after he died. I believe she lived on in the marital home for about ten years, then nothing...

Where was this? I have no clue.. The corner location should make it easier to figure out.

This picture also resembles the building on the corner of S. Seminary and College Street, behind Suntrust Bank building. I think it was (is?) Keystone Business Center or something like that...there's an emergency vet office and Manpower Employment there, along with a couple of other businesses. Back years ago I believe it was a cotton warehouse. Anyone know what I am talking about here?
