I am wanting a small puppy - nothing that gets over 5-8 pounds. Does anyone have one or know where I can get one that will not cost a arm and a leg? I have been keeping a look in the paper, but they are so expensive - cheapest I saw was $600. I would like a yorkie, pomeranian or some breed of that nature - just nothing that is black (had a black dog one time and for an inside dog, they seem to smell worse). Thanks!

Unfortunately, you're going to have to pay at least $400-$500 for one of those dogs. If you don't, you're most likely getting a dog with behavior problems. That's not to say that you can't love a dog and get it training, but it's going to be more difficult. Every once in a while you might luck up and find someone just wanting to find a home for their pups quickly, but most breeders are willing to wait it out for the big bucks. There's always a market for these cute dogs. If you want one, you're going to have to fork over the money.

If you don't mind having a mixed-breed dog, you might try www.petfinder.com or call the shelter. There's usually an average of $60 adoption fee associated with adoption organizations. I have found some pure-breed shelters, but they charge and average of $200 adoption fee and you don't know where the dog came from. They could be abused or unhealthy. Good luck.

First, you'll need to sign in blood that you will never ever mistreat the sweet little thing of course. Just kidding! We are animal lovers around here and a bit protective. Smiler

Thanks joy, I really want to place these pups at a good home, but they are outside dogs and are likely to be large. By the way I think they are the same as vicks new puppy is, ask her about the eating habits.
I prefer to have mixed breed dogs since they are more desease tolerant and not so high maintnance.
We purchased a "POM" from some lady in Petersville I would not recommend her at all, we found her in the newspaper, met her at the flea market in Center Star to pickup the puppy she is beautiful, but we had to have surgery for hernias "2", she had a sickness they get from and unclean kennel (can't think of the name), ear mites and was covered with fleas, she was one sick little puppy had to have IV plus antibodics from the kennel disease, @ 3mos. had hernia/spade surgery, she has been the joy that was needed in our family, we feel that she was sent to us to save her or she would not have made it.

I highly recomment Faye Gwen if you truly want a pom. Suggest if you purchase a puppy of any kind that you go to the residence where they are raised look at the mother and father plus how the owner takes care of them, question how many litters the mother dog has had, make sure it is "akc" no "ckc" just a little info that we have learned the hard way.
Amy'z Ark is an excellent Small Dog Rescue and adoption volunteer group. These folks are in Chattanooga, but I do home visits for them and they will adopt to people in North Alabama. Some of their dogs are in TN, some in Birmingham, and occasionally in Huntsville. If anyone in the Shoals wants to adopt from Amy, I will do the home visit. Many times the "foster family" will meet you part way to pick up a dog. Amy's adoption fee is usually $200. All dogs are spayed / neutered and up to date on shots. They live with a "foster family" so many are also house trained, too. You can see her current pups in need of a home here: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/TN236.html

Right now she has the following dogs:
Chihuahua (adults and babies, males and females)
Maltese (adult, male)
Shih Tzu (young, male - several)
Pekingese / Japanese Chin (adult, male)
Pekingese (adult, female)

I adopted my little Oreo from Amy and he is the sweetest dog ever!
I have a rat terrier and she is with out a doubt the best dog that I have ever owned. There are many available for adoption in the area. Go to petfinder.com and search for rat terriers in the Florence, AL area. There is a cute little girl named Lacie in Corinth, MS at the Humane Society. If my husband and current rat wouldn't kill me, I would go pick her up. Here is her link.

Please give serious thought to adopting a shelter dog or from a rescue group. Precious animals are put to sleep every day because there are not enough good homes for all the homeless. You can find all kinds of dogs from purebred to mixed breeds (which are precious - I have four so I know from experience).

Buying from some (not all) breeders amounts to nothing but supporting puppy mills where these animals are treated horribly and where the bottom line is the almighty dollar.

Please don't buy while others die.
Small dogs tend to be cranky, moody and not good with children. I grew up with a beautiful collie. A large collie at that, but he slept at the foot of my bed and sometimes on the foot of my bed. He was wonderful inside the house, never destructive and completely house broken. He was a very clean dog, never smelly, and he loved children, even children he had never seen. Kids would come to visit and they would climb all over him and hug him, pull his tail and ears and he would never whine or growl. Don't get a dog that has been bred for dog shows, they tend to be tempermental and high strung.
Our baby is a Brussels Griffon and the best family dog. He is about 9 lbs and loves people. His favorite place is in your lap. If he can't be there, he will lay anywhere that he can touch you. He's relatively potty trained; he still has accidents if I forget to take him out. And he loves to sleep under the covers at night. He doesn't move a muscle. I highly recommend this breed, if you can find them.

We just got a rat terrier/Jack Russel mix. (Because you know, we needed a THIRD dog.) She's 7 weeks, spotted black and white, maybe weighs a good pound. And she is adorable. And smart. (I got her from a woman at work that NEVER DRAWS A BREATH!!!! Love her, but she drives me nuts. She never stops talking!!!) If talking to a dog makes them smart, this litter will be Mensa dogs!

The HUGE dog loves her. He just slobbers all over her. The small dog was suspicious at first, but he's selfish anyway. Now he loves her.

We have a Brady (big dog) and Jeb (small dog). I need some names, people! My husband is calling her Cissy, but I work with a woman I really don't like named Cissy, so help me!!!!!
I don't really like doggie names for dogs. My rat is named Cassie. How about Chrissy?

And Shelldivr I respectfully disagree. Not all small dogs are that way. My rat is not but I did have a Pom that I almost killed because he bit my 2 yo son. Some breeds have a tendancy to be more aggressive than others. The Pom that we found a new home for was the alpha male of the litter and there was nothing that you could do that would deter him from what he wanted to do. My rat is totally different. She is so tuned in to me. She can tell by the tone of my voice what kind of mood I am in.
Names of dogs my I've had throughout my lifetime:

Shotzie (German Shepherd) EXTREMELY protective. She almost kept me from learning to swim. She kept 'saving' me...Cool
Stew (Pointer)
Rip-Rap (Pointer)
Wendy (Pointer) AWESOME bird dog! She only had 3 legs. Smiler
Ajax (Brittany Spaniel)
Misty (Silky Terrier) WORST $350 I ever spent.... Roll Eyes
Bummer (Heinz 57)
Apache (Black Lab mix)
Krystal (Golden Retriever)
Cheyenne (Wolf hybrid)
Sable (Golden Retriever) ABSOLUTE BEST dog ever owned! Smiler
Rambo (Rotty)STOOOOOPID dog! Roll Eyes
Java (Chocolate Lab) Has ADD... Roll Eyes
I was going to come back on this thread to mention that in light of the Ellen Degeneres dog scandal - Amyz Ark does have a contract. But there is no micro-chipping involved and she just asks that if you cannot keep the dog, that you return it to them and not the pound! I cannot imagine Amy (I have met her in person) coming to take a dog from a family!

Anyway, I like DogSoldier's list, so I'll add:

Ebony - little black poodle that bit my toes as a baby and my parents gave it to my aunt
Dusty - wiemeraner, great dog!
My Lady - weimeraner, another great dog!
Duchess - black miniature, teacup, toy poodle that did not bite my toes. Kinda yappy but very smart
Junior - Black & Tan mixed with wiemeraner! Good dog. Not too bright, but sweet.
Goliath - Rottweiller that we got as a pup. Not the brightest dog, but a good dog. He was very loyal and great with the kids. My daughter called him Go-Go. Only got growly a time or two - with adults, but easily disciplined.
Sandy - honey colored cocker spaniel. Totally useless. We gave that dog away (AKC registered, too).
Star - Australian Shepherd. Ugly as sin, scared of men, but great guard dog.
Maddie - American Pit Bull Terrier. Sweet dog. Smart, but very timid.
Lady - Boxer / black lab mix. Lady is the sweetest, smartest dog! She is super energetic and loves to swim and fetch. Her only flaw is that she thinks she is a lap dog, she weighs over 70 lbs!
Oreo - Shih Tzu (he's black and white). He is a beast! Smart little dog, not too yappy, but he is very vindictive. I love him anyway though.
I agree with Sheldiver and Globe Trotter...
A Collie, retriever, setter,in that line develop into some of the best companions...

I highly recommend you go to shelter and adopt..there are plenty of wonderful dogs there...
Chances are you are not going to get a AKC dog there...but are you looking for a dog that will make you a wonderful companion...or a piece of paper to brag about...
FYI (got this in my UNA inbox today -- PM me if anyone is interested & I'll give you the lady's contact info):

Hello!

I'm currently trying to help a friend find homes for 3 full-bred Shih Tzu puppies. She adopted the abandoned, pregnant female from the Florence animal shelter. She is caring for the puppies until they are weaned and ready for their new homes. The puppies were born 10/1/07 and will be ready for adoption right around the week of Thanksgiving. The adoption will take place through the animal shelter, and the new owners will pay $75 which will get them a voucher to have their new baby spade or neutered, etc. So, you would, essentially, be getting a beautiful little Shih Tzu puppy for FREE!

Both mommy and daddy are Shih Tzu's, but because they were abandoned there are no papers on them. I own a full-bred Shih Tzu; he came to us as a puppy from my friend who breeds them in So. California. I sent her pictures to view, and she said that they certainly looked full-bred. :-) My husband and I are adopting one of the puppies; have already chosen her! We can't say enough about these wonderful dogs!
TSC - How weird, I had a ****er named Sandy too!! I named her after "Annie"... I've(my family) has had in my short 25 years on Earth:

Fritz - Doberman (my dads)
Duke - Boxer/Pit (again my dads)
Pepper - Miniature Schnauzer (he attacked me when I was 3 and almost put my eye out, so he went away!!
Sandy - ****er spaniel
Yukon - Husky (adopted from my aunt when she had to move)
Drake - Husky/German Shepard (adopted from the neighbor when he died and his granddaughter said she was going to put him down if we didnt take him)
Keena - Staffordshire Terrier (my current baby!!)

Keena is also the reason why I'm NEVER getting a pure bred dog anymore. She has Atopic Dermatitis. Vet said its a skin condition that her bred is succeptible to. I love her, but $75 a month for her meds (she really needs to take them everyday which would be $150 a month but I cant afford that) is a bit much.
