For some, dietary & lifestyle changes results in beneficial changes. For others, it is hereditary, as is noted.

So far, there've been the answers I anticipated, however, not the volume.

I wonder... are there many folks whom are aware of their cholesterol levels?

Oh, and just to be certain, I will share additional information that has shown, through double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, to be extraordinarily effective!

Mind you, it is not medical advice per se, but sharing information from numerous scientifically valid studies.

Let's give it just a little more time... okay?
This is not medical advice.

This is sharing scientifically valid research findings.

Red Yeast Rice has been shown to have cholesterol-reducing properties. It contains lovastatin and related mevinic acid compounds that competitively inhibit HMG-CoA, which blocks the making of cholesterol in the liver, and lowers the LDL, VLDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides.

It increases HDL (good cholesterol) levels.

Suggested dosage is two 600mg capsules by mouth, twice a day.

Also, numerous double-blind, placebo-controlled studies indicate the cost-effectiveness and usefulness of niacin (Vitamin B-3) in lowering LDL and raising HDL.

One of the most bothersome problems is the flushing associated with niacin, particularly at therapeutic dosage levels, 1000 mg to 3000 mg. Time release capsules can help to avoid those problems. Studies indicate that niacin therapy can reduce LDL and raise HDL, on average, 20-50% and 15-35% respectively.

Another interesting finding for lowering cholesterol is policosanol. There are, however, conflicting opinions and findings associated with policosanol.

Policosanol is from sugar cane wax, and in research from the National Center for Scientific Research, in Havana, Cuba, researchers found that 20 mg policosanol lowered LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides 27% and 15% on average, while raising HDL (good) cholesterol 15%.

Generally however, increasing one's intake of omega 3, 6 & 9 fatty acids (found in high levels in cold-water fish such as Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies, Sardines, Herring) and in the following oils (by highest to lowest) safflower, sunflower, corn, soybean, walnut, peanut, rapeseed, flaxseed, extra virgin olive, are an integral part of a healthy dietary lifestyle.

The so-called "Mediterranean diet" (typical dietary regimen of those in that area) is a heart-healthy diet.

The trans-fatty acids that have been in the news recently, are hydrogenated oils and fats which have shown to increase heart disease by significantly raising LDL (bad) cholesterol and lowering HDL (good) cholesterol. Hydrogenated oils and fats are not found naturally in nature, and are made by taking natural oils and adding hydrogen atoms to them in a special process. By adding hydrogen atoms to those oils and fats, they become more shelf-stable, and are able to be used by food processing companies.

You might be unpleasantly surprised to find hydrogenated oils and fats by reading the labels of some of the most common foods in your kitchen, including most brands of "peanut butter"! Only brands of natural peanut butter (peanuts & salt) are best!

As with any food item, some may experience certain symptoms, including life-threatening ones because of allergy or interaction with medication.

You should consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your healthcare.

Thank you S.L. for your info. I should have added in mine that I WAS overweight about 60 lbs. Now I am about 190-195 at 6'00. My BMI is 21. for my age that is very good. Everyone needs to be alert to their own health issues. One can not rely on their Doc to lead them. A doctor, now days ,is overworked and over extended, to hold your hand on your way to old age. I have a omron fat loss monitor that I use so I can see for myself and maintain the proper body fat. I understand that my health is up to me Please don't rely on your over worked, over loaded Doc to lead you into your golden years it's not gonna happen folks. Take responsibilty for your own health.
