Rick Singleton is my choice also. I like his mission statement for the City for years to come. From working with the Chief for 25 yrs plus, he is an excellent manager and visionary and would be a valuable asset to the City of Florence as Mayor. Check out rick singleton on facebook and read up on him to stay informed.

My main reservation:

The newspaper stated that the Civil Service Board decided a month or two ago that Rick's replacement would have to come from inside. No outsiders need apply.

Why in the world would this fine city limit their choices that way? What if a stupendously qualified man with long history of unblemished success from some large police department from out of state wanted to make a home here?  Why in the world would be not at least invite them for an interview?

Well lets see, the people he got rid off where thrown under the bus to make him look good.

Look at the rating the new chief gave the police dept. a 5 out of 10.  I don't think even his own dept. thinks a lot of him.

As far as vision for the future, he may have a vision, but I don't think he has the skills to achieve that, Florence will be set back 50 years.  We already falling behind the other shoals cities and Muscle Shoals is just waiting to put us down and out of the picture for good.  Sen. Irons, Rep. Black, Burdine and the others are not doing anything to help Florence. Everything they have done is to help Colbert County and nothing for Florence.  Florence will have to do everything itself to build up Florence and the chief just cannot do that.

The chief pretty much picked his own replacement as the position was not open to everyone and the civil service went along with him.  That was the most unprofessional method I have ever heard of picking the new chief.

He is not even close to the other candiate in being qualified with experience for the mayor position.

He may be a christian man but that does not make him the best choice.

Florence could be on the verge of the biggest growth ever with new businesses, building a interstate highway from North Huntsville to north of Florence  to Ms. expanding roads up to Tn. and bringing in the correct industries. And the chief just does not have those skills or assets to achieve that.

Really, the people he got rid of were thrown under the bus to make him look good??  You care to elaborate on the people that were thrown under the bus?   Because the way I understand it, those individuals did things on their own to cause their dismissal/resignation.  Chief Singleton didn't get rid of anyone to make himself "look good".  He did what was right for the department and the citizens of Florence.  You'd be singing a different tune if he had simply kept on reprimanding those employees and not actually getting rid of them.  Even though those individuals did something wrong "as police officers" it reflects on us all.

Chief Tyler didn't rate the department a 5 out of 10, read the article again...He was giving an example to the Civil Service Board that the department could probably rate a 5 in some areas on a scale of 1-10.  He actually rated the department a 8.

I believe that Chief Singleton will do an outstanding job as Mayor.  The Civil Service Board made a choice on their own, to stay internal.  The Chief is not over them and has no control over the five individuals on the board.  The Chief didn't pick his successor the Civil Service Board did, and the city had five very good candidates for the job.  I'll be voting for Chief Singleton.

Threw two former deputy chiefs under the bus? Let's make this clear: One deputy chief was accused by many of sexual harassment and the other was an admitted drunk.

Rick Singleton has done a fantastic job as chief of Florence Police and he will do an equally fantastic job as mayor. There's no comparison between Singleton and Haddock, especially in their past leadership. A small county office located in one corner of the courthouse is nothing in comparison with a dynamic police department.

It could result in a smoother run city. Council members or citizens not in alignment with the mayor’s policies could find themselves in jail. Just a thought. I would hope not but there could certainly be a danger there. An ex police chief would be more likely to be suspicious of citizens. To be quite honest none of the candidates in the race at present are remotely qualified to run this city.  The loss of Mayor Irons will prove to be a great loss.  **** Jordan or Sam Pendleton would be much more qualified in my opinion.  I wish Tammy Irons could run.

I believe that both men could make good Mayors but I personally believe the best person for the job would be Rick Singleton and I hope he wins.  I fully believe that both men are or will be honest and unfortunately politics is often dirty but I can say that I know Rick and Rick is a very outstanding person and has a wonderful family and cares about the City of Florence.  I believe he will make and be a very good mayor.

Just curious, what is the color of the sky in your world?

Smoke, I’ve always been a supporter of RS but let’s not kid ourselves; we should at least be concerned about the possibility of a police state.  I’ve seen too much and heard too much over the years out of LEOs. The laws some of them enforce are not the ones they always abide by.

I’m not saying RS would ever violate the law; I don’t think he would but there is an anticipation on the part of the force in general as to what authority they can assume.

Smokey a critical eye of citizens is always on you as to how you behave  in or out of uniform. A stop sign always means the same for everyone.
