I am considering getting one of those Magic Jacks they advertise that puts your telephone on the internet.

Do any of you have any experience with that or any of the VOIP services ?

I would like to get rid of my regular telephone service and save about $80 a month, but wife dosn't really like to use the cell much, and wants to keep regular telephone service. I am thinking this may be an out for me.
I have DSL light, and according to BS, I could drop my dialtone service and still keep the DSL at the same price, but if I had a faster DSL, there is like a $5 per month additional charge.
Anybody out there doing anything like that ?

I don't know about ol' Jack, but I've had Vonage for almost 3 years and absolutely love it! With every feature imaginable + free long distance to boot, all for a grand total of $28+change. Its hard to beat.
My downtime since starting the service has been extremely minimal, probably less than if Ma Bell would have had it.
Hi all,

I have installed Magic Jack on a friend's computer and on my wife's. Several friends have gotten Magic Jack to be able to talk with family in the Philippines free. The person on the other end must also have Magic Jack. But, once you buy the two Magic Jacks for $40 each; then you only pay $20 a year.

My wife has it on her computer to cut down on long distance calls. She has kept her AT&T service to use for incoming calls (her business number) and uses the MJ for outgoing calls. It has saved her a lot.

The problem with MJ or any internet based, or digital phone, is that if you lose power -- you lose your complete telephone service. With AT&T, even if power goes out -- you can still use your telephone. I suggest keeping a minimal service AT&T, or whatever carrier you use -- just for such emergencies.

One might say that is where you would use your cell phone. But, what if you have not recently charged your cell phone -- and power is out for a while. No way to recharge the cell.

We have had a few problems with MJ -- but, it has saved money.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill
We have majic jack. It's okay.We did have a few problems in the beginning and if my son is playing xbox live on our computer mj doesn't work.We fixed that last night by swapping computers with him.We have reliable cell phone service as a backup.John Reb is a genius at figuring out ways to cut back our monthly bills. They were becoming more than our monthly income. We also switched to fta satelite instead of paying a monthly cable bill. That was the smartest thing John has come up with.
bell south got me a little p/oed and as some may know im the wrong customer to piss off. i went outside and cut the phoneline from the pole to my home. i fired my phone company and have never looked back. i recomened vonage to anyone, i have heard ALOT of bad things about majic jack
I just signed up with Vonage and kept my same number. Also, if you have AT&T phone service and call to cancel, they will just about do anything to keep your service. They will or almost will match Vonage. Even if you have no desire to change from AT&T, it would be worth it to call and tell them you're thinking about canceling. They will lower your phone bill to keep you.

No, you are required high-speed internet connection to have cable phone service, and Vonage doesn't offer that. I already had comcast then a friend suggested I switch phone services saying I'd like the Vonage system much better. I finally gave in and have loved it since only wishing I'd have tried it sooner!
By the way, the majority times I've had any trouble with my service is comcast problem. I've learned now is to phone them first for trouble instead of Vonage!
