If you see Internet pop-up claiming you have a virus or spyware just close it out. It is a trick to get you to click on a button and download a program which will cause actual problems.

You may also want to make note of what AntiVirus you use at home and inform your household not to trust any internet pop-up.

I've seen 3 incidents in a week. They were the same Malware but have different names "Antivirus XP", "AntiVirus 2008", and "AntiVirus 2009". They can really make a mess of things so watch out.

For some precaution I'd also download spybot at home, update it and immunize your system.

My boss had that to pop up yesterday and he happened to think "ask Dixie" before he clicked...when I first walked in -- it looked legit like a Norton notice, but when you realize that the tab is an internet explorer and it is made to look like your desktop (i.e. C drive, E drive, with (2 virus) in red beside it ... Walking in not knowing what my boss had clicked on to make it come up -- it could have been a major issue, but when I asked what he did to get to that page and he explained I realized it was a phish of sorts...

I agree -- be on the lookout...
I'm sure the computer experts may have something better, but I cleared a friend's computer of it with a program called 'move on boot'. Its very small and allows you to delete a program that gives the error message similar to 'cannot remove or copy, program in use, disc access denied'. You install the program, restart the computer, then find where the virus is located. On my friend's it was called Antivirus2008y. Look in programs, once you see it, click it and the screen to the right should show antivirus2008yexe. That is what you can delete. Right click it and and choose the move on next boot item. Restart and its gone. Hope it works for you. Here is the link to the download.

that has popped up an my computer and I an't get it off. It comes up everytime I try to click on a link. I knew it was a problem and warned my kids. How do I get rid of it?

I tried the usual things but a program called malwarebytes finally worked.

The problem I ran into wouldn't let them get into the control panel, shell to DOS, access the Internet, go to Start-RUN, go to system restore, etc.

Whatever you use I would suggest doing it in safe mode.

If you can the ultimate fix is system restore. That was disabled on the computer I was fixing.

Try Start- Programs - Accessories - Tools - System Restore. Restore it to a date before the infection. Then get spybot and immunize!
250 Gigabyte external drives are available for $100 to $130. For anyone one with Windows XP or Vista, making a recovery disk to the external drive should be fairly simple. Then, if your hard disk must be wiped, restoration is fairly simple -- backup, backup!

I envision a camp in the middle of the south western desert for hackers, spammers, virus and worm writers and pedophiles.
It may not be at the retail level yet, but 250 gigabyte drives are now in the 50 dollar range online. $100-150 is the price of 1 Terabyte (1000 Gigabyte) drives now that 1.5 Terabyte drives are available. I agree with the rest of your post however, there's no reason not to back up now.
