JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Jackson County man was jailed after allegedly attempting to burn his girlfriend while she was in her car – an incident that was caught on video.

James Ray McElroy of Pisgah is now in the Jackson County Jail, facing charges of attempted first-degree assault.

Deputies were called to a home on May 10 to deal with a civil matter regarding a partially-burned car. It was only after someone posted a video clip to social media that the true details came out.

When sheriff's officials were alerted to the video, they teamed up with state fire marshals and began an investigation. They now believe the subject in the video is McElroy pouring gasoline on his girlfriend's car as she is trying to leave.

The video shows the woman backing up when the man lighting the gas on the car with the woman still inside. She flees the scene with the vehicle still burning.

Sheriff's officials said that social media can be very beneficial in cases such as this.

"Video is evidence," said Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen. "In the news business, you see things, you can say it happened. Video is a good thing for us. It is good evidence."

McElroy remains in jail on $50,000 bond.
