I applaud such a policy. A family member committing suicide is hard enough to deal with; scrutiny from the ghouls who "have to know the details" is too much.

Ok then why are wrecks involving fatalities reported? A family member being killed that way is equally hard to deal with. The same with a murder, drowning, etc. These are usually reported, with names and often addresses. Why should a suicide be treated any different?

Because suicides are rarely public, and are very personal. Murders are publicized because they become part of the legal process and the offender becomes public record. Drownings and traffic accidents happen in public domain...rivers and highways, and in the case of traffic accidents, are usually because of somebody's faulty driving.

Suicides are usually behind closed doors, involve no other persons, and do absolutely no good to publish the facts...especially with the religious and social stigma attached to suicide.
I think the heading made it seem like murder, at least that was my original take on it. I'm sure that's why people were wondering why they couldn't get the link to work.

Many years ago I asked someone who's relative worked at what was then the Florence Times why the obits would say suicide or self-inflicted, etc. She told me it stopped people from asking at the visitation, funeral, etc., what had happened. I'm not sure that's always true, but I can see how it would be useful to know that beforehand.
