why oohhh why does this younger generation expect anything but misery out of life when they have no clue what values are.

I'd be willing to bet that one of them was installing $4,000 of stereo equipment in a $400 car.

So basically you're saying since this was a young black man that you assume is on welfare and has no insurance, he should have just been left there to die? He was shot in the neck for crying out loud. Pretty much anyone in that situation would be airlifted to Huntsville. And who says the flight was "free"? For someone who if memory serves me is an educator, I would expect a little more restraint in applying stereotypes to a situation when so few facts have been divulged. For all we know at this point this man didn't do anything wrong. There's certainly nothing to indicate that he deserved to be shot. I guess if it had been some rich white UNA student it would be different.

It appears that you are the one who inserted race in the discussion. I never mentioned it; also, I have no idea the race of the victim. The reason I referenced the hospital situation is that 48 news at 10:00 the victim was in good condition in the Huntsville ER, which means he wasn't in surgery, in ICU, etc. Today they reported that he was in good condition.

After listening to a police scanner for many years when I'm not at work, it seems more than a little strange to me the the Lauderdale EMS folks (who are paid by Helen Keller Hospital) are more than willing to charge for a short ambulance ride to the landing zone, the trip to Huntsville, and time in Huntsville Hospital -- which is in a "partnership" with HKH. From Hansel Court, he could have been under treatment by qualified people at ECM ER in a more shorter time period, stabilized, and flown to Huntsville if necessary.
I apologize for over-reacting. I assumed the victim was a black male simply because it appears that way from the picture of him being carried away. I'll certainly give you there's some overkill when it comes to med evac. A lot of times the chopper will be called out to be "on standby" for car wrecks, etc. Of course the ground ambulances show up also. Even if there's no airlift there's likely to be a bill just for showing up at the scene. I think since HSV Hospital is supposed to be a Level 1 Trauma unit or whatever they claim, anything that looks like it could turn serious goes that way. You make a good point about the HKH partnership deal. Might be some shady stuff going on there but I have no idea. Sorry again for getting all up in arms. It's been a rough week.
Air Evac is auto dispatched to different types of calls. For vehicle crashes it would be rollover, entrapment, ejection, a crash involving a motorcycle, or involving a pedestrian. It is also auto dispatched on a few other calls, like gunshots.

Alot of the time (mostly rollovers) it isn't needed and Air Evac is canceled once someone gets on the scene and sees that it isn't serious enough for air transport. There isn't a bill unless they either transport the patient or if the Air Evac crew jumps on the ambulance to provide care.

The EMTs and medics on the truck aren't paid enough to be in on any sort of conspiracy to try and shaft ECM. They are there entirely for the patient to make decisions that will best affect their outcome. The folks on the truck don't have anything against ECM, ECM just can't provide some of the services some of these critical patients need. Many times if Air Evac can't fly due to weather or whatever they will transport to ECM instead of Keller, even if Keller would be closer. How's that conspiracy for you?
