Some research indicates that many who die actually perceive what is/has happened and are aware they are dead.  The research has to do with the fact that the brain shuts down completely later on and it's likely that many people know or will know they have just died and experience the death process slower than first thought.  Many that have been resuscitated have said that they were not in pain and that it was very peaceful but there just isn't enough research and evidence on the topic and subject.

I remember reading somewhere in another article other than this one., at some past time, where criminals, in France, that were destined to die on the guillotine were previously told to purposely blink as long as they could after the blade had sliced through their neck and their head fell into the basket.  In those unscientific research events it was stated that the head would blink a number of times after the head was severed from the body.  To some this would be a horrendous thing to realize but I'm sure it would be different for each person.

Then again it's said that many people continue to vote long after death!
