I have been very disappointed in Mayor Irons and the city council's lack of effort in making city government more efficient. There may be something going on that is not being publicized but all I see is more convenience and spending for city government and inconvenience and misuse of tax money. Higher water rates, talk of charging for not recycling, etc etc, inconveniences to citizen taxpayers.

I can't see where there has been any cuts in the numbers of city employees and vehicles being drive by non service employees. I'm not talking about police, fire, street, utilities, and other services, but all these other trucks and cars and suvs with supervisors and clerks driving all over town burning gas and requiring maintenance. Get rid of these luxurious pickup trucks and either pool vehicles or pay mileage to employees instead. At least study these options, and for god sakes buy cheaper gas efficient vehicles and less of them.

I don't mind paying for services and even higher water rates as long as the city tightens their belts and make departments more lean by reducing number of employees and expenses by city departments. I would imagine there is alot of fat in administration in all city departments. At least look into it and issue findings.

Or give me all the information and I'll tell you how to make taxpayer money well spent.

It's time you city council members provided some oversight instead of a green light to every spending project and land speculation that comes along. It's time the taxpayers of Florence were your constituency and not city employees. At least publicly provide data and tell us this is not the case. And please no creative justification reports.

EXACTLY!!!!
Great post, evil genius!
It will be an interesting council meeting today at 5 pm.
And to piggy back on another excellent point you made on the politics side, these tea party activist seem to be more interested in what is happening in Washington than in their own backyard.

If you feel they are non-service personnel, get the tag number, vehicle number, etc., then call and ask. Your're not going find out on here. As for paying mileage, do you realize that the IRS rate is $0.51 per mile. That don't sound like a lot, but it adds up to big bucks real fast. Smiler
It's not my job to find out what and who they are. That's my point, the mayor and city council, whose job it is, is not concerned with efficient city government. If they want to pay me to manage the city, I will find out and fix it.

My point about the mileage is that they should also be looking at ways to reduce the cost of transportation within the city budget, instead of just passing the cost of joy riding on to the taxpayer, if in fact that is what's happening. The council should start holding the mayor's feet to the fire and start reducing the cost of government, instead of just spending what revenue they get in.

If you remember at least one cent of sales tax and maybe 2 i cant remember was orignally a tax to put an education plan into place about 2o years ago and was susposed to be taken off when implemented in 2 years. Surprise that tax never was taken off, they just found ways to spend it.

When you have city department managers wanting to put on clown shows to fund their departments, as was suggested awhile back, you've got too much of a budget. These people are just not managers. They are good ole boy fund dispersement clerks.
At tonights meeting it was discussed how the city elect. has brought the old bread store and how they put showers in it for the employees. Now do the emp. get showers on the clock or off the clock with the taxpayers paying for the water and sewage cost. I bet few non city emp. get free showers at their jobs. As for as city cars, I say take away the police chief, the 2 ast. police chiefs car and let them use their own private cars to get to work, lunch, store trips and then go home. They don't show up after work hours for anything anyway. Thats why they have captains and others on duty. If they don't trust the captains then fire them. If for some unknown they had to, then pay them mileage to use their personal car. If they need an official car during the day, they can check one out. Make all of them drive marked police cars, at least maybe a crook will see it and think twice about a crime. This could also apply to the fire dept. These little extra perks have slipped in over the years and don't look like much, but look at the big picture and it is a great deal of money.
government employees, Fed, State, County, local and cops are all the privileged class and as such are entitled to use all of these resources however and anytime they want.. How dare you question their ability to do so.. you must need a fine in your life if you can afford internet access to come on a website like this and say something about them.. sounds like they need to raise the costs of that water and sanitation service even higher
