How long has he been in office, and he is just now fiquring that one out...
An event cordinator to bring business in has been suggested numerious times in Tuscumbia,Sheffield, Florence with no support...Why? because most of the individuals sitting in the council seats could not run a ice cream stand, yet they are voted into a position not on business savy... but popularity...

Thus you have what you have...
Hmm... I've brought the idea up several times as something that could be put at Veterans Park, and every time I am beat into submission by some on here that feel it would never work, LOL. So I don't know. There are positives and negatives for sure. I would say that if the city could land a big time private investor to help fund it, that would help tremendously. Or maybe form an alliance with Shef/Tusc/MS to help with the costs. I don't see why we couldn't draw the occasional music shows to the area, with the history we have and a decent population base.

Of course, I tend to lean toward what the others are saying that this is nothing but an election year promise. I would really be surprised to see any work done on this in the next four years, even if Irons is re-elected.

you people are so gullible. Don't forget the election is coming up in August. Irons is running for another term, so whatever he says from now until the election will be to get reelected.

You might have thought the Music Hall of Fame would become many things, but what it HAS become is a pit into which our tax money is now being thrown to the "tune" of over a quarter million dollars a year. And that white elephant boondoggle was touted as something that would pay its own way with admissions, concerts, etc. It never has and it never will. Let's don't fund another money trap!

BeternUS ....art thou speaking of a quarter million of local tax or state wide tax?
Gee....shouldn't they have thought of that when they built the Conference Center? If they had planned it right, they could have made that a BIG convention center with the capacity for entertainment as well as convention space. Also, can anybody remember what the city paid for UNA..or whoever to do a study of the feasability of the "Bass Pro" idea? Some have mentioned the Hall of Fame...yes, it is a costly place to operate..but I know they could do more to that field they have for concerts and bring in more money. They only have a few events/concerts a year back there. I know...the weather factor, etc. But I have been to many concerts at the ampitheater in Nashville...I think that they may have done well with the set up there.

The way I figure is we need to get some better industries around here..if that happens things like a bigger convention center would be great. As it stands now, I can't see us being able to support a bigger convention center. With Huntsville, Tupelo, Birmingham and Nashville within in 1 to 2 hours...can we convince musical groups, etc. that we can pull enough people in to fill up an arena for concerts?
A civic center isn't a bad idea, but they need something to put in it from time to time to pay the bills. Can the area support concerts, theater, or other entertainment venues? Can the area draw trade shows and conventions? For example, once a year I go to the Space and Missile Defense Center conference in Huntsville, held at VBCC. If you're going to have a civic center, you may think about hotels, restaurants, and the supporting infrastructure.

Don't get me wrong; I think it's a great idea as long as it's properly marketed. A trade show with a golf tournament at the shoals golf courses sounds like a really good idea.

On the other hand, a civic center that is not properly marketed is an empty building costing taxpayers lots and lots of dollars.

It comes from the state coffers, but what the heck--it IS TAX MONEY anted up by the TAXPAYERS of this state to pay for operating an "attraction" that was sold to the TAXPAYERS as something that would PAY ITS OWN WAY, but has proved not attractive enough to make good on that.

Can you say "B O O N D O G G L E"?

I would not go the “boondoggle” route myself.

I’m glad it was built.

I’m glad something in the form of tax was p****d to the Nawth rather than to the South.

It is ,however, a warning to anyone that thinks a convention center would pay it’s way.

I know you are very critical about some of the things that have been built here that turn out to be very expensive.

I have no problem with that. I think projects should be looked at objectively before listening to the raves of a few , caving in and building things that are just unwise.
