Ever since Huckabee turned in a dominating performance at a summit of Christian voters in Washington a few weeks ago, he has been riding a surge among likely Iowa voters (he's now second to Mitt Romney, and gaining). The media, like me, have been charmed by their initial impression: "It's hard not to like Mike Huckabee," gushed Newsweek. Even The Nation said he has "real charm."

But all the attention on his salesmanship skills obscures the real significance of his rise within the Republican Party. Mike Huckabee represents something that is either tremendously encouraging or deeply disturbing, depending on your point of view: a marriage of Christian fundamentalism with economic populism. Rather than employing the patented Bush-Rove tactic of using abortion and gay rights to hoodwink low-income Christians into supporting patrician, pro-corporate policies, Huckabee is a bigger-government Republican who emphasizes prison reform and poverty relief. In the world of GOP politics, he represents something entirely new -- a cross between John Edwards and Jerry Falwell, an ordained Southern Baptist preacher who actually seems to give a **** about the working poor.

But Huckabee is also something else: full-blown nuts, a Christian goofball of the highest order. He believes the Earth may be only 6,000 years old, angrily rejects the evidence that human beings evolved from "primates" and thinks America wouldn't need so much Mexican labor if we allowed every aborted fetus to grow up and enter the workforce. To top it off, Huckabee also left behind a record of ethical missteps in the swamp of Arkansas politics that make Whitewater seem like a jaywalking ticket.

All of which begs the question: If this religious zealot's rise represents the end of corporate dominance of the Republican Party, is that a good thing? Or is the real thing even worse than the fraud?

From your posts it seems that you don't believe in God. I hope that changes.

You may have come from "primates" but not the rest of us.

In the event this thread actually ends up about Huckabee and NOT PBA, I would like to comment on Mike.
First, I have friends in Ark who are not real happy with him. He fully supported illegal aliens coming to Ark., I guess to work in the chicken plants. Dosn't matter what he is saying now, he filled Ark up with illegal Mexicans.
In West Ark, there is a Huckabee nature center (named after his wife) where there is a display of fossils in rocks explaining that they are millions of years old. Dosn't jibe with his rhetoric about the age of Earth. While I believe in evolution (I offer some of the posters on this forum as example "A" who may not have quite made it yet, but they will go nameless), there are many who accept evolution up to the point of , but not including Humans. I think if he tweeks his rhetoric a bit, he may have great appeal to that bunch.
As far as I am concerned, to me he is the least objectionable of the Republican candidates, except for Ron Paul who could be very good, but I don't think he stands a Chinaman's chance.

PBA you are so funny. You saying you post stuff you may not agree with but you don't say any thing when you cut and paste. As long as you keep doing this I will alert the readers because there are always new readers getting on board and may not know about the crazy stuff you post.

By the way where did I call you a name in the last post?

Yes, I have been told by many in here that you PM people in here about my post. But if it turns you on go for it. You tell me I can't think for myself, yet you go to others and tell them not to read my post.lol I think the readers will decide if they wanna read or not without your dictatorship. This is what we don't need is a clown like you, that wanna bully people.
Mike never said the earth was only 6000 orbits around the sun old, that was just the question posed to him. The words that I heard come from his mouth were "he didn't know how old the earth is, he wasn't there when it happened". The audience at the debate, including Guiliani, got a good chuckle out of his answer. He did say he believed in the Bible and that is was God's word. Whether or not a year to God is the same year we experience is an unanswered question.

Mike Huckabee says, America wouldn't need so much Mexican labor if we allowed every aborted fetus to grow up and enter the workforce. To top it off, Huckabee also left behind a record of ethical missteps in the swamp of Arkansas politics that make Whitewater seem like a jaywalking ticket.

I don't agree with abortion, so I've got no problem with that. I haven't heard anything in particular that makes me think Huckabee is unethical. Nobody is perfect, so I wouldn't be suprised if he has sinned.

Wow! It was not that easy for Bill Clinton. Not that I cared for Bill that much, but its ok for some and not okay for others. I guess God wanting it that way.
