I don't watch today's sitcoms but did view ABC's mini-Cheers reunion on their current sitcom "The Goldbergs".  Just a brief moment into the show, that I prerecorded, and I knew I wasn't missing anything and why I don't watch "The Goldbergs" when right off the bat there was an anti-Christian tone in the writing.  Still I hung on to see how the Cheer's former actors would do and while there was an obvious play on each of the characters old styles from Cheers Carla wasn't near as sharp witted as she was on Cheers and Age hasn't been good to Kristi.  The one that really surprised me though was Cliff, or John Ratzenberger's character.  The amount of weight he's put on is alarming and sure enough the article linked to above under his name tells he has gained 100 lbs and is currently at 293 lbs his friends, doctors, and others are alarmed that with that weight and his current age (said to be 71 but I believe its actually 72) that he is putting his health in serious jeaprody inviting a heart attack or other health issues.

In the show on ABC it was quickly aparent that John has now way outweighted Norm (George Wendt) and I can understand why his friends and doctors would be concderned.  I always liked the character Cliff played and actually the other jobs that John Ratzenberger had taken portraying American businesses and manufacturing.  The sad thing is when you see behind the characters and the actual people that play them and what they are like off camera.  Kristie Alley, Ted Danson,  Woody Haroldson and even Kelsey Grammer are not the lovable characters that they were picked to play.  They are truly great actors to play someone that 180 degress from their real personalities but then I think that's more the norm of Hollywood (or Holly wierd) than being something like the characters they portray.

From what I've seen of them off screen and in person interviews or news about them none of them would be very likely to be someone you would befriend and care to be around.  I don't know if money makes them that way or if they were just like that all the time.  I guess though their success on Cheer's could have also type cast them into a roll that they got tired of playing and maybe they just got jaded at the whole scene having made their mark and then wanting to get away from their perceived characters that many came to love.  Cheer's isn't the only sitcom that has that result either.  Just look at some of the characters off Sienfield and their interactions with others off screen.  I guess it's truly a job after all and they can be good at their job (acting) but not a very good person in real life.

Here is hoping that John Ratzenberger's health doesn't nose dive account of his recent explosion of weight, aparently from binge eating because he seems to be one of the fairly nice people on and off screen.

Maybe I was mistaken but what I took that from was the absolute horror the mom showed at learning her son was considering a Christian College.  That was what I was referencing it on.  I may still have it recorded so I’ll review it again if it’s still there.  I have been wrong in the past so not past an error now

I honestly missed that...I'll look again...but they Jewish and are very religious....so I'm thinking it is most likely the distance away that scares her instead of it being a Christian College. She's a "Smother" and wants her kids right with her...and in the end she tells him if he goes to UCLA for film she'll fly down every weekend.

I do remember the distance being a problem and it may have been a Jewish objection to a Christian school other than a secular thing like with one Frazier episode over Christmas.  That would void my criticism then because then it wouldn’t be the attack on Christianity that I thought initially.

From the name alone I should have gleaned Goldberg =Jewish.  The difference is huge from say what I was initially thinking.  Now it’s more like a Auburn/Alabama type thing rather than my initial fear over it being a secular hatred of anything religious.  Glad you pointed that out.

Actually that Christmas Frazier episode where Frasier’s girlfriend was Jewish, her mom comes visiting and they try to conceal anything Christmas from her (the mom) is one of the funniest and favorite of mine.

I watched it again and she didn't object until he said it sounded "cold" and then she jumped in agreeing with him and said the school was "trash" and I didn't see any look of horror on her face. He did say too that maybe he should go. That's her character. They've had episodes where they were celebrating Jewish holidays and she...as is her nature...wanted them celebrated at her house. The daughter's bf is Jewish too and the families clash over where they will celebrate the holidays. BTW...this is a real family...but there are three boys instead of a girl. Eric got changed to Erica. Adam says Eric wasn't very happy about that but got over it. BTW...in the show he goes to a private school founded by the Quaker William Penn.

William Penn Charter School

"The Goldbergs" has frequently featured storylines at (barely) fictional William Penn Academy, which is based on William Penn Charter School, the Philadelphia private school that has operated continuously since 1689, and from which Goldberg graduated in 1994

Wow, I have been educated.  I never realized till you told me this was based on an actual family that really exist.  I wrote off ABC, CBS, and NBC sitcom’s a while ago in favor of channels like Discovery, Science, Nat Geo etc...  I’m amazed this family actually exist or did and the sitcom is based in part on actual things that happened.

I just expected the show to be another canned PC show that was some fictional family based on whatever flavor of the month focus group felt was popular.  I’ll have to make an attempt to view it a little more, or at least DVR it to watch at my leisure.

Yeah, I can say it's sad because I weigh exactly what I did when I played basketball at Athens State decades ago. Sure...

Yeah...I am so sure you played basketball at Athens State.  Just like salt and crashton you couldn't stand it...you just had to butt in with something snarky.  Since you always have to make it about you...have someone toss you a fish for me. If no one has ever told you to just shut up when you have nothing to offer to the conversation...they really need to do so.

For someone who 'never insults me'... you sure spend a lot of time thinking of ways to attempt to insult me. Why is my screen name always appearing in your posts? If you don't want to interact with me, why are you always mentioning me?

Why do you attempt to make your post about me?  If nobody has ever told you,  If you can't be bothered to address me, just shut up when it comes to mentioning me.

"OH MAN"! he was ready to exact some punishment.  I wonder if his dad thought the clip would have gone viral like the Daily Mail?  I bet it ends up on AFV America's Funniest Videos given that folks (particularly with kids in the videos) can win some big bucks .. ($5,000 up to $100,000)

He was so upset mommy forgot to kiss them all goodbye! Almost as cute as the little cupcake boy.
