What did they propose to give us during the Swine flu in 2009? Nothing...because the left didn't make it out to be the black plague to cause panic and more Trump bashing like they are doing this time. All the people with 20 different IDs and SS cards will make out like bandits. If Mitt and all the other billionaire dems give out their money I'll take it...but leave the taxpayers alone that actually worked and put in that money.

Sen. Mitt Romney demanded “urgent” measures in response to the coronavirus crisis in a plan outlining additional steps including a proposal to pay every American adult $1,000.

The Utah Republican delivered his ideas as an addition to urging the Senate to take up the House-passed coronavirus package, joining others who supported a proposal published in the Wall Street Journal by Harvard professor Jason Furman.

Furman, who chaired the Council of Economic Advisers during the 2008 financial crisis, called on the federal government to implement a rescue package that would include a one-time payment to every American adult of $1,000 and another $500 for every child.

“The House coronavirus response package contains critical measures to help families in Utah and across the nation in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, and the Senate should act swiftly on this legislation,” Romney said in a statement.

“We also urgently need to build on this legislation with additional action to help families and small businesses meet their short-term financial obligations, ease the financial burden on students entering the workforce, and protect health workers on the front lines and their patients by improving telehealth(sic) services. I will be pushing these measures as Senate discussions continue about an additional relief package,” he added.

“Every American adult should immediately receive $1,000 to help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy,” Romney’s office stated in a press release. “Congress took similar action during the 2001 and 2008 recessions. While expansions of paid leave, unemployment insurance, and SNAP benefits are crucial, the check will help fill the gaps for Americans that may not quickly navigate different government options.”

Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown soon echoed the plan idea.

Romney’s proposals come as the nation faced more aggressive measures across U.S. cities attempting to stem the worsening of the coronavirus outbreak and following the passage of a second coronavirus package by the House on Saturday. A multi-billion dollar response package was passed by Congress and signed earlier this month by Congress.

Romney’s recommendations include grants to small businesses from the Small Business Administration as well as helping students with deferrals of student loan payments and other measures.

Furman’s initial proposal called for a “one-time payment of $1,000 to every adult who is a U.S. citizen or a taxpaying U.S. resident, and $500 to every child who meets the same criteria.”

The law, he added, “should also specify that the payments would continue in 2021 and beyond if the unemployment rate rises to 5.5% and remains there or higher. Hopefully this will not happen, but if it does, the money will be needed.”

Furman told MSNBC that the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is “very serious,” and could be more serious than the 2008 crisis.

“In this case, everyone is cutting their spending and lots of people, even if they don’t lose their jobs, will lose time at work, hours, tips, potentially a large blow to their income,” he said.

Reactions quickly poured in to Romney’s statement and the impact of the proposal which many estimated would cost more than $200 billion.

That's the whole point...  What's so hard to understand about that? The republicans passed a tax cut for wealthy individuals and corporations.  Now we're facing a recession, but folks are too hard headed and proud...

"that's socialism!"

so isn't the $1000 helping the rich?   giving us poor people money to pay the rich?  just asking.

on a practical thought,,,, a week to pass thru congress,,, a week to get to who ever,,, a month to figure out  how to pass it out,,, a month to get out,,, yep crisis already over.    maybe congress should just not do anything, but what they are good at?   yep *****in to media and pointing fingers.

how are they going to cover our losses in retirement funds?   watch Alabama will say taxpayers need to put money into state employee fund,,, while watching their own savings drop.

What is it with acrylic fingernails and gel polish with him anyway.

It's too hard for liberals to make sense especially when they
go political, there's no way to justify the way of communism.
It works in reverse of human nature so what the hell are they doing
in America, oh yeah, free stuff and take down our US Constitution.
I never did understand liberals will chose abortion over free condoms.

Yes...weird isn't it? They claim they can't afford b/c but they can pay hundreds for abortions.

actually, although I could use the money,,, not because of virus.  I plan on donating to someone I know who is laid off from restaurant job due to virus.

One problem is that wouldn't really help anyone....second problem all the ones that would get it that doesn't need it...third are the scammers that would get it.

Told you it was a bad idea.

New York City is apparently looking for American taxpayers to bail out the city’s low-wage migrant workers.

New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer believes taxpayers should “subsidize the city’s cheap labor economy,” arguing in a report that these “frontline workers” are extremely vulnerable amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Frontline workers are putting their safety on the line to keep our city running — nurses, janitors, grocery clerks, child care staff, EMS workers, bus and truck drivers and so many more,” Stringer said in a statement. “And yet, these same essential workers whom we trust with our health, our nourishment, our loved ones, and our lives are too often ignored, underpaid, and overworked.”

They “very often lack healthcare, have to travel long distances to get to work, and struggle with childcare,” Stringer added.

But in the report was a kind of admission that "many in New York City are also undocumented, meaning they do all of the above while living in fear of deportation under the current federal administration."

To clarify, $1200 checks are ONLY going to some w/social sec numbers, NOT immigrants w/ tax IDs (ITINs).

Thanks to GOP, these checks will be cut off the backs of *taxpaying immigrants,* who get nothing. Many are essential workers who pay more taxes than Amazon.

California Democratic Gov. Gain Newsom confirmed that his administration is providing economic relief to businesses in his state that do not otherwise qualify for federal aid, including those owned by illegal aliens.

“[W]e always consider those that are documented, those that are undocumented, those that are living in mixed-status families,” Newsom said Friday during a press conference. His remarks were in response to a Telemundo reporter’s question about what he was doing to support undocumented workers

As well it should.......

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., sparked online controversy Wednesday after she attempted to reframe reporting on her desire to direct coronavirus aid to illegal immigrants.

"There, fixed it for you," Omar tweeted alongside an image of a New York Post headline that read: "'Squad' members want to make illegal immigrants eligible for coronavirus aid." The Minnesota congresswoman crossed out the phrase "illegal immigrants" and replaced it with "American taxpayers."
