NOW who will they vote for? All of these people who hang on Beck's every word, and who were thinking about voting for Huckabee - their heads must be spinning!

Polls Show Low Enthusiasm For Potential GOP Presidential Candidates

First Posted: 04/21/11 01:20 PM ET Updated: 04/21/11 01:21 PM ET

Republican presidential contenders face a lack of visibility or enthusiasm among their base nationwide, according to two new polls released this week.

On Wednesday, a Pew Research Center survey found most respondents, even a plurality of Republicans, unable to name a GOP hopeful they were most familiar with recently.

The open-ended question, part of Pew's weekly News Interest Index, found a majority of those polled (53 percent) said they didn't know which potential candidate they had heard most about. A smaller -- but still quite significant -- portion of Republicans (38 percent) responded similarly. While perhaps different from not being able to identify any of the GOP contenders by name (some respondents may simply not have remembered seeing media reports recently), the poll's results reveal a particular lack of visibility among the members of the crop.

The second poll, released Thursday by CBS News and the New York Times, found Republicans nationwide particularly unenthused by their options. When asked to name which potential candidate they liked best, 56 percent of Republican respondents chose "no candidate."

Conducted April 15-20 among 1,224 adults nationwide, the CBS News/New York Times poll had a margin of error of three percentage points. Republicans represented a smaller sample: 543 respondents with a margin of error of four percentage points. The Pew poll, administered to 1,015 adults from April 14-17, had a margin of error of four percentage points; the smaller sample of 270 Republicans had a 7.5-point margin of error.

When examined together, the polls reveal a political environment that lacks a true frontrunner, possibly leaving an opening for new candidates or adding additional importance to the first primary and caucus states.

Even if early states such at Iowa and New Hampshire provide a jumping off point for potential candidates to take the lead, as it stands, favored contenders remain unclear. Polls released this week surveying Iowa Republicans by Public Policy Polling and American Research Group found Mike Huckabee to be the top contender, but neither showed the former Arkansas governor with an insurmountably strong lead. Mitt Romney is typically New Hampshire's preferred option, including among respondents from a PPP survey released earlier this month, but given his many years as a New England public official, a Granite State victory may not mean as much.
Significantly, Pew poll respondents deemed Donald Trump the hopeful they had heard the most about recently; 26 percent of respondents overall and 39 percent of Republicans chose the real estate mogul. The next-closest contender, Mitt Romney, trailed in comparison: nine percent of overall respondents 12 percent of Republicans named the former Massachusetts governor most ubiquitous.

Yet despite Trump's visibility, the CBS News/New York Times poll revealed he has failed to make inroads within his base. Only 35 percent of Republicans said they viewed Trump favorably in the new survey, while almost as many, 32 percent, said the opposite. Trump's polled even more poorly Tea Partiers, who he appears to be courting -- 32 percent of that group said they had a favorable opinion, and 33 percent chose "unfavorable."

In addition, 57 percent of Republicans and 55 percent of Tea Partiers in the CBS/Times poll said they did not consider Trump to be a serious candidate. 72 percent of overall registered voters agreed. Furthermore, only seven percent of Republicans in the Pew survey chose Trump as a candidate they felt enthusiastic about.

Republicans surveyed did appear open to Trump's views on President Obama's birth certificate, however. Among GOP respondents overall, 33 percent said they thought Obama was born in the U.S., and 45 percent said that they thought he was not.

This week's polls reveal a Republican primary race that, so far, has failed to capture the public's attention. Although Trump's candidacy has garnered the most attention, his rating among members of his base shows that his candidacy will likely be nothing more than a sideshow. A real frontrunner still has yet to emerge.
Don't give him a heart attack yet. At least the more conservative of the bunch tend to actually look at character and where they stand on the issues rather than what party they are representing.

besides there may be another candidate....I will announce it here first. I am currently in process of writing a book entitled "A Twinkle in My Father's Eye". It is my story of how I was born a poor child in Mississippi to a white daddy and an native American mother. She left me at an early age and returned to reservation where I went to seek her out. I changed my name to "He Who Runs With Scissors", and now I plan to go on Oprah's book club and announce my candidacy to the throngs of screaming females, using only my charisma and good looks. Although I have never really held a job, I pretty much know everything there is to know about business, and I figure I will be able to return some of what was taken from my people rightfully back to them in the form of handouts and entitlments. If anything goes wrong I can blame the former leader, and tell people to "shut up and listen to me". I know both sides will be happy to work with me, I am so charming.
I stand for truth, justice, and the American way. Once I was the Twinkle in my Father's Eye, and now I shall be the guiding light that leads us to changes we can be proud of!!!!!

And I seriously doubt anyone will. There just ISN'T anyone who could be a viable candidate.

Does anyone remember the 1988 Democratic party? That was the year the DEMS didn't really have a good choice to run. There were a bunch that ran, and more different people won primaries that year than before or since. They wound up running Dukakis. Anybody remember him or what he stood for? No wonder the Repubs won!

THIS time, I'm afraid it is the Republican party that will be in that position. Too many people running that either have major points against them already, or no name recognition, or no rallying points to pull the party together with.

I think Obama will have his second term. I'm glad.
I was think of using somebody who probably has little to no initiative. Someone who knows their way around a bong pipe. Probably some one who is used to either cashing a government check or complaining about not getting one. I am looking for someone who has never had to really work hard, and wouldn't hit a lick at a snake for less than $10 an hour. I need someone who rails against businesses and hates capitilism, yet has taken advantage of its good graces their entire life. In essence I am looking for a know-it-all smart azz who is interested in laying around the WH, moaning about what everyone can do for him. Would you be interested in being my running mate Rocky? I bet you fit the bill perfectly!!!! Wink

You are right he may have a second term, but his hands will be tied by a Republican Senate and House, and he will be forced to compromise in order to save his legacy.

And wouldn't that be good? I mean, if he DOES have to deal with a Repub House and Senate, maybe your side would get some of the things they want, and my side would be able to keep some of the things we want.

I'm wondering though, if there really WILL be a Repub House and Senate. The Tea Party people are giving the mainstream Repubs such a hard time, it looks like this fracturing of the Republican Party might reach into the next election for the House and Senate too.

Only time will tell.

I appreciate the offer, I really do Roll Eyes, but considering I do not want to align myself with the radical right wing at this point in my life (or ever for that matter) I will decline.
But you seem to fit right in with the crowd that the republicans have out there now.
If you don't want Jimmy McMillan or Gary Johnson (both of whom I am sure at least fit the "way around a bong" criteria) how about Fred Karger or "The Pizza Guy" whatever his name is.

There are PLENTY of clowns and crazies to choose from that will suit you PERFECTLY as a running mate, teyates!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO! Razzer
I have said all along I did not have a problem with Obama, AS LONG AS there was a balance of power. When he was elected, and the Dems controlled both house and Senate, he and they went on a spending spree the likes of which had never been seen. They let their arrogance show through. It cost them in the next election. I am all for a balance. One party does too much damage when they have full power.

Now, let me see, didn't I read somewhere on this forum that you CLAIMED you made something like 250k a year???? (Yeah right)
In all likelihood, you are sitting in some JIM WALTER home or doublewide trailer drawing an SS check for something, be it disability of retirement. You DO fit the profile for a TEABAGGER

I don't even have to defend myself to you and won't.
I did get a Pell Grant but have enough student loans to pay off until I am 40.
As for what I do for a living, be careful where you EAT if you ever visit a certain establishment and I am your waiter!! (Actually I wouldn't do that, but the wait staff HAS joked about it if we can ever figure out who you right wing radicals who post on here really are!)

Actually teyates, thank God that except for the venom that is spewed constantly on this forum by you and ME, I don't know your political views in public and you wouldn't know mine.

Most of the increase in spending is due to mandatory spending, which neither OBama or Congress has any say so in altering lately. Federal revenues are at 60 year lows because of the collapse of the economy, which also causes increased demand on all social safety net programs. The fact is, OBama is really no different than BushIIe in any substantive way.

The Repubs will have majorities in House and Senate in 2013, but not enough to override a veto, so complete gridlock will become the norm, which will cause even more economic upheaval.

Even though you are a"Fox,Beck,Palin, womens clothes" obsessed little runt, I don't think ANYONE who has known you on these forums would ever take it seriously that you would tamper with peoples food...I know I didn't.

Gridlock would be welcome over continued increase of spending and planned taxation. At some point and time you have to address the core problem, and that is we are spending more than we can take in. Tax revenues are down because the economy is down. That is no reason to shift the burden needlessly on to one faction of the population. An across the board 10% decrease in all of the federal budgets would suit me fine. That means Medicare, military spending, etc. 10% is not too much to ask. If you have to also increase revenue, a 1% tax increase on all of those making more than $40K is acceptable. WIthin 1o years I think we could recover, but it will not happen overnight.
Extending the BushIIe tax cuts was a good political decision for OBama, but a bad one for our country. Mandatory spending and debt service is where the large increases in spending are going, not to defense or discretionary spending. The biggest driver in mandatory spending is health care costs. Annual health care cost increases of double the inflation rate are where our money is going. And the baby boomers are going make those costs explode over the next 20 years, I would say conservatively they will increase by 200%.
I gots me one of the newer models, its got some wheels...heh, heh....
Yeah I know. Does Jim Walter actually still build homes? When I was a kid I used to see lots of them, but I never even hear them advertise any more. Were they not the company that would build to the point where you could finish the inside or something? Actually was not a bad deal for people who were handy with construction.
When the housing crash came, and construction of homes dropped, they went out of business in Jan 2009.
Our's was complete except for painting and finishing closets and window trim. The requirement was to own the land it was built on. It was inspected and coded the same as any house. Jim Walter basically was the contractor.

I bet you fit the bill perfectly!!!! Wink

What about this guy?

As for what I do for a living, be careful where you EAT if you ever visit a certain establishment and I am your waiter!! (Actually I wouldn't do that, but the wait staff HAS joked about it if we can ever figure out who you right wing radicals who post on here really are!)

That was quite a waste of money, and I'm sorry you'll have to be working at PIzza Hut for 20 years to pay for it

The company now is Walter Energy, and they produce those nasty fossil fuels that the greenie hypocrites couldn't live without.
