My Son Was Taught to Believe in Jesus by His Mother -- How Do I Help Him Become a Free Thinker?

Panicked by his son's Jesus references, an agnostic dad discovers a skeptic's reading list for kids. But is counter-indoctrination really the answer?

"Daddy, why did Jesus invent butterflies if they die after two weeks?"

I just about hit the panic button when my 6-year-old son Theo put this question to me not long ago. His mother, who is a Christian, had taught him that Jesus was God. When Jesus's visage appears in a painting or on television, Theo sometimes exclaims, "That's God!"

In his butterfly question, he seemed to reason, syllogistically, that if Jesus was God, and God created the world and its life forms (butterflies being one of them), Jesus "invented" the winged creatures. Either that, or God and Jesus are simply interchangeable in his mind.

"First, Theo, your question presumes that Jesus was God," I responded. "Many people, like Mommy, believe he was, but many others don't. It also presumes that there is a God -- we don't know for sure that there is."

"I think there is," he retorted.

Oh my! This man's sons have OBVIOUSLY been brainwashed! He needs to explain to them about the Flying Spaghetti Monster, because as we all know this is the best way to show the foolishness of believing in a supreme being. Forget Dawkins, Hitchens, and Harris, they cannot approach the pure logic and rational devastation the Flying Spaghetti Monster wreaks with only one noodely appendage! It is a settled matter after all, there is no G-D if liberals, leftards, communists, and other useful idiots say there is not, right? For they are the arbiters of all real knowledge, right?

Okay, I cannot carry on that farce any longer... The Alternet? Really? From what I saw, that which was not insane was just trash, low life style trash. And you really eat that stuff up, don't you? You know what they say, "you are what you..." well you know the rest I'm sure.

The would be correct, if only on a minimal level. In other words, not pnly do I NOT believe that, I have, in fact, come to the conclusion the site is pure rubbish, and that is putting it kindly.

God said it... on Alternet.

I believe it.

That settles it.
