Football, basketball, baseball, and soccer are unquestionably sports. I'd even call cheerleading a sport. There's art, skill, talent, and valid competition in each.

But "motorsports"? No. They're merely an occasion for people to gather and watch men drive noisy, vulgarly-colored cars make a succession of left-hand turns!

Well, I'll give you kuddos for saying it first of all, in the South & secondly, knowing the response will be less than positive. Smiler

However, I must disagree. If you ever drive your vehicle at an extremely high speed, you'll find out for yourself that it's difficult to just stay on the road, let alone pass other drivers. It takes many years of practice & a whole lot of talent to be a Dale Earnhardt.
LOL....... nice first post. Obviously you came here to banter or you are someone under another name. Either case, racing is a sport. You try to drive one at 180 mph, turning left for 3 hours. You might have a different view. And then theres all kinds of strategies that play into it. But to say it isnt a sport is ludicrous. And Joy mentioned Dale Sr,... he died racing in the sport he loved.
I wouldn't give you a plug nickel for football, baseball, basketball, or hockey. but let me strap in, and dive into a turn at 11/10, and I'm a happy man. if you have never driven a prepared car on a closed course, you wouldn't understand. maybe some of you need to look into SCCA or NASA amateur racing competitions. you can do them in a class for everyday cars, up to completely prepared racing machines. once you get hooked, you will understand. until then, keep spewing crap like this.
I've shot quite a few races at the Nashville Fairgrounds, I'd rather have a root canal with a rusty pair of pliers. You can see just as much action sitting next to the interstate exit ramp. However, there is an art, skill, talent, and valid competition with racing.

The guys that work on these cars are amazing mechanics. I've been around them, I've talked to them, I've seen them squeeze every drop of horsepower out of an engine physically possible. It's amazing how much science these guys know and understand, they know more tricks than a PhD in physics.

Hours upon hours of work and massive amounts of money are placed in the hands of the drivers. These drivers have a natural talent for controlling their car, avoiding wrecks, and reducing damage when they're in one. You try to make a left hand turn with several other cars trying to cut you off and slam into you while maintaining high speeds. You'll probably end up in the wall very quickly.

No, I'm not a race fan, but I've been around it enough to respect it and the people involved. Yes, it's a sport. It's different than football or hockey and I would choose a bare handed prostate exam over working a race, but it's a sport nonetheless.

Great analogies and perception of the SPORT and its participants, as for the barehanded prostate exam, whew, I'm speechless.

Everything else is just a game.
