What movies have surprised you by being much better than you expected? (or worse, if you really have to go there LOL)

'Million Dollar Baby' Not being a big Clint Eastwood fan, I wasn't expecting to like it. I was wrong, I loved it! Another I thought would disappoint because of all the hype was 'Avatar'; it did NOT disappoint me at all.

Before I watched it, I thought Fargo was going to be a drama; I didn't realize it was a dark comedy until a few minutes into the movie. Fargo, Raising Arizona and No Country For Old Men are excellent Coen brothers films.

Boogie Nights was different than I expected. I think it's the first film I ever watched that made me laugh, made me a little sad and disturbed me too.

I thought it was just going to be a movie with lots of gratuitous sex in it, but Paul Thomas Anderson (wisely) did not make the film about sex. Instead, he concentrated on sex strictly as a business and portrayed the adult film stars in the movie as people who tried to break away but ultimately returned to the industry because few people were willing to forgive them of their past.

The movie also concentrates on changes in the porn industry, especially once the movies started being shot on videotape in the early 80's. The songs, furniture and even the dialogue transport you back to the late 70's. Definitely worth watching.

I loved "The Bucket List", "To Kill a Mockingbird" (Harper Lee) and "Fried Green Tomatoes: (Fannie Flagg). "Brave Heart" and "The Passion" (Mel Gibson). Movies I have loved, I own.
David you should check out Trick R Treat, it's a horror film that was filmed in 2007 and wasn't released until 2009 because no studio wanted to release it for some reason. it went straight to DVD, but i tell ya, it is by far one of the best horror films of this decade i think. horror is definitely my favorite genre of film so this film definitely surprised me as how good it turned out. usually i don't expect much from horror but this was definitely a home run.
