Believe me, this poor player/rich player thing isn't at all new. It's been that way at MSHS since I attended and I graduated in 1983. I had a boyfriend who was a star quarterback at his previous high school (which was 3x larger than MSHS). His father's job moved them from there to Muscle Shoals and the coach at the time REFUSED to give him any playing time because the incumbent quarterback (who was not nearly as good) was the son of a prominent Muscle Shoals business man and a HUGE school booster.

But then, MSHS has been that way about EVERYTHING since it was founded. The kids from the rich/influential families in Muscle Shoals have always gotten preferential treatment, in sports or anything else. The so-called service clubs which were in place were nothing more than popularity contests. Who ever heard of having to be voted into a service club? If they were true to their charter, it should be the more the merrier. Sadly, that's always been the culture at MSHS and probably always will be since the "golden children" from my time are now the parents of the current "golden children".

bingo you hit it on the head...The school boosters play a huge role in the athletic program..Unfortunately most of the school boosters are rich with rich kids on the football team ..hence we get this favoritism..

I'll just stay in my cave then. I've been involved (as a parent) in 7 school systems in two states. For those of you curious they are: FCA (private school), Florence City, Lawrence County, Limestone County (AL) and Gwinnett County, Dekalb County, and Fulton County (GA). And I have never ever heard of such foolishness. I would be very disappointed in my school board if they even entertained the notion of hearing such complaints. My daughter is an athlete, band member, and involved in several academic clubs. I cannot fathom a parent going to a school board meeting to discuss a child's playing time (or lack of) in a football game. When I was in school (Lauderdale County) if a kid's parent did that kind of thing, that kid would be nominated for Crybaby of the Year.

Psssssst, TSC, you are totally right!!!

It has MORE to do with pocketbooks than most people realize. And that is how it has been since that school opened up in the early 60's.

Money and Politics at MS. See my first reply to this post on the first page.
Well, I don't know what the "official" criteria of the High School Athletics Association (or whatever it's called) are, but I can tell you that the primary requirement to be a coach at MSHS is to have a big brown nose for the rich parents/boosters.

I also agree with you, Seminary, that there are coaches who don't brown nose, unfortunately, at schools like MSHS, they just don't have a very long shelf life. In fact, the last REALLY good one was probably C.T. Manley.

Coaching graveyard. It comes down to the fact that MSC has not got the talent to compete, whether in the game or on the bench. Rose is an OK coach but he ont be successful at MS Its hard to go home. MS professes to be a school of excellence but that does not inclue sports. REDNECKS WITH MONEY.

I disagree, I think they have just as much talent as any school does, but I also know of all the "babying" that goes on.

Tough??? They might be if parents wouldn't gripe and fuss with the coaches all the time. It truly IS a different world, and WHO does it hurt??? The kid, of course.

Leaves the parent just scratching their heads thinking that their kid should have got a scholarship, ugh. Seen WAY too much of that behavior and attitude in that system.
I really don't know why they bother with the pretense of advertising the coaching position as open...why don't the "powers that be" just hand pick someone who will kowtow to their every whim and play their sons, whether they have talent or not? It really is a joke. And Kindred is so right...the only ones who really get hurt are the kids...both the ones who are made to believe they have talent and the ones who truly do have talent but never get to showcase it on the field.
Sorry but they do not have the talent of other teams tey compete against. Russellville,Decatur.Hartselle,Cullman.amoung others. They would be a good 3a team. I know folks dont want to hear the truth in MS but thats it. How many trips to the super six, final four or baseball championship? 0. Wont happen in Basketball or baseball this year. MS will have to be happy with mediocrity. Just hire a coach, let him coach and stick to what you have always professed to be....a school of excellence(academic)

That's not true at the basketball program has been tops in the state for years..As far as Football MSH has several players that should have received scholarships and athletes every year. In 2006 they had 8 seniors that were getting recruited..and they were in plenty of games against top level competiton. The problem again goes back to Hallman and his on-field decision making and his decision not to keep his best athletes on the feild at all times..Now wil they ever be on the level of Russelville probably not but they can compete aginst Hartselle, Cullman, Decatur, Athens etc..with the right coaching and use of available talent..
I played there 1980-1983 and I don't think they have made final four. They made final eight last year to get a chance to make it to b'ham. In tennessee here we have only 3 classifications compared to five there. I like the five class set up. But I like 8 teams making the state tourney here in tenny. You do what you do (coaching) for the kids playing and what an experience it was for me personally to finally make it to the tn state tourney (as the school athletic director) after watching it for many years as a kid with my dad. A real good time and great experience.
Hey let me know when that list for mshs is known. Very interested in it as k.rose is a personal friend.Use to live across the street from him and just thinks it makes sense to hire him.

Striker42 - is 10thavefreezeout referring to a bad basketball coach or a bad football coach? I thought our fellow classmate D.C. was still coaching basketball at MSHS. Thought he was a good one as well, or should be...he certainly played the game well when you guys were running up and down the courts back then. Big Grin He was pretty good at baseball too...the only guy I ever saw in high school baseball who could and did execute the splits to get someone out at first base. Eeker
I think 10th is talking about both beemer. DC actually took my playing spot. I know they went to the final 8 a few years back in baseball and put out by cullman (I was there). About dc doing the splits he was pretty gangly and flexible. Razzer That is so funny beemer think about him at first base. geez

As far as our 83 team we were two games from the state finished 21-6 ; that record bettered by derek peters and that group.

Muscle Shoals has ralston turner who is being looked by everybody. I think he is pretty talented. Turner is just a 10th grader.

Have not given out alist yet. Has the Basketball team ever been to the final 4? I dont think so. Granted they are usually the best team in the shoals but boys basketball in this area is not the best. This yr they are the 2nd best behind R'ville. If they had 8 srs who were being recruited then they should have been better despite a bad coach.

I guess you have proven my point as the basketball has continually been one of the best in the North Alabama..Tha'ts quality coaching and athletes..and if I am not mistaken the track team is good and one of the top runners in the state is a senior at MSH..As far as the 8 srs who were being recruited comment..it's obviois you don't have much knowledge about coaching a football team..To be successful in Football it takse alot more than good players..it also takes a good coach who provides, leadership, motivation, and makes sound decisions on and off the feild...
like a "good neighbor" state farm is there. Smiler
neighbor do you work for state farm?

That is what I was getting at is that it was known that hallman only came to mshs to get enough years in to vest his years in the alabama retirement system. He doesn't probably care all that much about being an ad. etc.

That is why I think rose would be a good fit. He played there, lived there at one time and has expressed an interest in it the past two times that it has come up. ms continues to go outside so to speak. Can ya go home? It will be tough I am sure but give kev a shot.

Hey what about women's volleyball brenda mayes has done well with that program.

lol no I don't work for State Farm..Forgot about the Women's Volleyball team they are tops in the State every year as well..agree with you regarding Hallman.he treated his job like he was in it for the retirement, and he mistreated a bunch of kids and ruined some athletic careers...Rose would be a good fit but he is at Hoover the next step is the collegiate level..and he knows about the politics at MSH does he want to deal with it?..don't know..

The 1994 Trojans basketball went to regionals at Hanceville and beat Curry and Lawrence County but got beat by Sumter County in the final four in Birmingham. Anderson was the head coach then and Conners was the assistant at the time.
