bubba, I don't think(?) you post much in the areas where this is a problem. There is a specific group with a strange obsession that flood all the threads with their fussing and inhibit discussion. It's just annoying. It's not the name changes as much as how they are used that is the problem.

I agree with LMM's suggestion. That's probably not news to anybody. Razzer
I need to change my name, I did not realize until just now, Times Daily postes 4765, Tuscaloosa News postes 2731, Shoals free forum 350 "bluesman" and I am falling behind on the Gadsden Times 179 of them. Nah, think I just keep the same old same one. But, if people want to use different names, whatever turns thier buttons on.
This would also prevent the banned posters from turning right around, making a new name with a new email, and posting again in 5 minutes.
I don't mind if someone wants to change their name to something else because they thought of something better, but changing names just to start crap over or ridicule someone before they are caught again is insane.
If people has any integrity, this would not be a problem.

A new name attached to a 'new email', that's why attaching names to an IP address would stop that.

So ,if your friends were taking up for you gus , would they be trouble makers too? Roll Eyes
Taking up for somebody is fine. We've all taken up for Monet & Co.'s favorite targets. However, if you bring it up with no provocation, how is that different than what Monet & Co. does? I know y'all think it's funny & that she sincerely asked for it, which is SO true, but it eggs that bunch on. They love playing the victim. JMHO

That wouldn't be good for me, because a lot of the time Amanda and I use the same computer.

There are enough people on here who know BOTH of us to know we are different people, but use the same computer.

I know there are a whole lot of people who abuse the name changes, but the honest ones, like Dixie, TSC and a couple of others including myself made Posts about our name change so everyone would know it.

The good shouldn't be penalized because of the bad.

Maybe when we figure out who is doing all the name changes and new accounts we can just ignore them???

I got banned years ago and had to start a new name because once you are banned, they do not offer forgiveness.

LOL, I think TSC and I were the first ones banned on this new forum. That was a trip! hehe

Now we are great friends and have even met in real life. Smiler
Kindred is right. I've counted at least 5 couples on here, tho I think one is now banned, so that wouldn't work.

Also I'm sure many are like me and use a laptop all over the country and have different IP addresses show up. Most people aren't tied to one. That would also affect those who use one computer at home and another one at work.
I don't travel, but i do have a floating IP, and i don't think i'm the only one. I wasn't aware of it until last summer when i kept getting a notice that i was banned.
EH kept assuring me i wasn't, and it took quite awhile for us to figure out the problem.... My screenname had become attached to an IP that had been used by someone else that was banned. After a few weeks of signing on and off it finally swtiched to another IP.
Good point, LMM. Frowner

On another forum, my husband posted there & the mods just sent me a personal message inquiring. I told them the deal and that was that. Now, if he would have started trouble, they'd have bumped him, but that's how it should be handled in my opinion. It was also obvious to them it wasn't me because opposites attract. Cool
well, lets put it this way, if i were banned-- there would be absoutely no way to keep me from obtaining another account.

available mechanisms to avoid simple IP bans:
1: web proxy, aka proxify.com
2: browser proxy/SSH tunnel
3: obtaining a new IP from your ISP
4: using my neighbors wifi (i live next to some apartments, plenty of AP's)
5. TOR network, easiest and seemless using firefox's torbutton.
6: do i need to go on?

the only good moderation is a good mod team.

Thank you for that info. Smiler

The time that myself and one of my NOW good friends got banned for fussing, Amanda still retained her privilage to be on here.

I just couldn't log in for a week or so.

It would be so unfair to ban an ISP when there are more members here who use the same computer.
i agree in principal that there should only be one name, but how to effectively do this so certain people cannot use a dozen different names to actually try to hide their ID on line while promoting a place or stirring up trouble needs to be addressed.

I make it simple, I just use my initials in the end of each post as I say nothing here I would not say face to face to for example or to the authorities if need be.

TD,

Would you please either bar name changes or restrict them to once a year and have all names show up under the poster screen name when you click the name. Link them by IP address and you could stop a lot of the CRAP on this forum.

Thank you.

Exactly, you have hit the nail right on the head.
