In which Scripture verse do you find the name Yahweh?

Hi VP,

While the name Emmanuel/Immanuel is found in Scripture -- INRI is not found in Scripture.

John 19:19, "Now Pilate wrote a title and put [it] on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS" -- is in the Bible; but, technically the inscription INRI is not.

I am not questioning that this is the meaning of INRI -- but, what IamShouting! has listed is what is shown in the Bible.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

SHOCKER!!!!!!
You argue against the acronym for the inscription on the crucifix.

INRI is an acronym of the Latin inscription IESVS·NAZARENVS·REX·IVDÆORVM (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum), which translates to English as "Jesus the Nazarene (Galilean), King of the Jews (Judeans)". The Greek equivalent of this phrase, Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων (Iesous ho Nazoraios ho Basileus ton Ioudaion), appears in the New Testament of the Christian Bible in the Gospel of John (19:19). Each of the other accounts of Jesus' death has a slightly different version for the inscription on Jesus' cross: Matthew (27:37), "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews"; Mark (15:26), "The King of the Jews"; and Luke (23:38), "This is the King of the Jews." John and Luke state it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, while Matthew and Mark describe it as the charge for crucifying Jesus.

Yahweh:
What has been said explains the so-called qeri perpetuum, according to which the consonants of Jehovah are always accompanied in the Hebrew text by the vowels of Adonai except in the cases in which Adonai stands in apposition to Jehovah: in these cases the vowels of Elohim are substituted. The use of a simple shewa in the first syllable of Jehovah, instead of the compound shewa in the corresponding syllable of Adonai and Elohim, is required by the rules of Hebrew grammar governing the use of shewa. Hence the question: What are the true vowels of the word Jehovah?

It has been maintained by some recent scholars that the word Jehovah dates only from the year 1520 (cf. Hastings, "Dictionary of the Bible", II, 1899, p. 199: Gesenius-Buhl, "Handwörterbuch", 13th ed., 1899, p. 311). Drusius (loc. cit., 344) represents Peter Galatinus as the inventor of the word Jehovah, and ***ius as it propagator in the world of scholars and commentators. But the writers of the sixteenth century, Catholic and Protestant (e.g. Cajetan and Théodore de Bèze), are perfectly familiar with the word. Galatinus himself ("Areana cathol. veritatis", I, Bari, 1516, a, p. 77) represents the form as known and received in his time. Besides, Drusius (loc. cit., 351) discovered it in Porchetus, a theologian of the fourteenth century. Finally, the word is found even in the "Pugio fidei" of Raymund Martin, a work written about 1270 (ed. Paris, 1651, pt. III, dist. ii, cap. iii, p. 448, and Note, p. 745). Probably the introduction of the name Jehovah antedates even R. Martin.

No wonder then that this form has been regarded as the true pronunciation of the Divine name by such scholars as Michaelis ("Supplementa ad lexica hebraica", I, 1792, p. 524), Drach (loc. cit., I, 469-98), Stier (Lehrgebäude der hebr. Sprache, 327), and others.

* Jehovah is composed of the abbreviated forms of the imperfect, the participle, and the perfect of the Hebrew verb "to be" (ye=yehi; ho=howeh; wa=hawah). According to this explanation, the meaning of Jehovah would be "he who will be, is, and has been". But such a word-formation has no analogy in the Hebrew language.
* The abbreviated form Jeho supposes the full form Jehovah. But the form Jehovah cannot account for the abbreviations Jahu and Jah, while the abbreviation Jeho may be derived from another word.
* The Divine name is said to be paraphrased in Apocalypse 1:4, and 4:8, by the expression ho on kai ho en kai ho erchomenos, in which ho erchomenos is regard as equivalent to ho eromenos, "the one that will be"; but it really means "the coming one", so that after the coming of the Lord, Apocalypse 11:17, retains only ho on kai ho en.
* the comparison of Jehovah with the Latin Jupiter, Jovis. But it wholly neglects the fuller forms of the Latin names Diespiter, Diovis. Any connection of Jehovah with the Egyptian Divine name consisting of the seven Greek vowels has been rejected by Hengstenberg (Beitrage zur Einleiung ins Alte Testament, II, 204 sqq.) and Tholuck (Vermischte Schriften, I, 349 sqq.).

Hi VP,

First of all, I do not recognize the crucifix -- for my Jesus Christ is alive and well -- sitting at the right hand of God the Father -- interceding for all Christian believers.

My Jesus Christ is not an infant, nor is He dead, hanging on a cross.

I know what INRI means and I have used it myself many times. However, I was only pointing out that IamShouting! had made a list of names found in the Bible -- and INRI, as a name, is not found in the Bible.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Hi B50,

That is an informative copy/paste -- but, that was not the point of my previous post. I was not questioning the name Yahweh or where it was derived.

What I was saying to Puppy is that it is not found in the Bible. Let me clarify that; it is found in the Hebrew Names Version (HNV) Bible; but, not in any of the translations we normally use, i.e., KJV, NKJV, NASB, NIV, etc.

So, yes, Yahweh is a name for God -- but, it was not in the list given by IamShouting! for he/she obviously does not use the HNV Bible.

By they way, which Bible translation do you use? For Bible study, I use the NASB. For my writings, I will use the NASB, KJV, NKJV, and sometimes the NIV.

But, we should appreciate what IamShouting! has given us without folks throwing stones and saying he/she is wrong.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Hi VP,

My, my, you "do" look for any little negative faux pas to jump on, don't you? Do you spend you life seeking the negatives? Look up, my Friend -- the world is not negative and not everyone is looking to fight with you.

Just curious; do you want to fight with everyone who is not Roman Catholic?

Really, my Friend, if you are not careful; folks will begin to think you don't like me. Can you imagine them thinking that?

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

No, of course not. Just you, my friend. As you are the only one with an obvious axe to grind, and you are the only one judging and speaking as though you alone hold some kind of authority.
Don't you find it curious that you correct my addition of "INRI" because that is what is found on almost every crucifix.
Are you a twilighter? I've never seen anyone so uncomfortable with the crucifix.

Hi VP,

Just guessing; but, I would imagine that even Jesus Christ would ask, "Why do you insist upon keeping Me dead? I am ALIVE, I am sitting at the right hand of the Father, interceding for you and all Christian believers. Why do you want to keep crucifying Me every week?"

And, that is my problem with the crucifix instead of the cross.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

I always saw the crucifix as a decoration and a commemeoration of the event, not a reliving of it.
that's just silly, bill. of course he wouldn't ask anything like that, because he can see into their hearts and know what they mean by it.

i don't have a problem with either, any more than i have a problem with white bread or wheat. some people prefer one, some prefer the other.
live and let live, i say. it's not hurting you, so ignore it.

Hi Nagel,

Too often, Jesus Christ hanging on a crucifix is just what you said -- a decoration, a fashion statement to be worn around the neck on a chain. That's not my Jesus Christ.

Not sure which church you attend; but, in Protestant churches we KNOW that Christ is not still dead on the cross -- but, is very alive in heaven. So, why should we keep Him on the cross -- or around my neck on a chain.

If you have a loved one who dies -- will you keep the coffin sitting in your living room so that you can always go visit? I don't think so.

So, why should you keep Jesus Christ hanging on the cross? If you want to visit Him -- you can always talk with Him in heaven. But, I assure you, He is not hanging dead on some cross.

But, as you said, it is a personal choice. I prefer to worship and honor my Jesus Christ who is ALIVE!

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

No, VP,

Jesus Christ is NOT the ever-living sacrifice. He is the ONCE FOR ALL sacrifice who died ONCE on the cross to offer salvation to us. He is NO LONGER a sacrifice; He is our ONLY Mediator in heaven, the ONLY Mediator between man and God.

We do not and should not continue to crucify Him weekly. ONCE for all; not DAILY for all.

You don't visit the cemetery of loved ones Bill? You don't think about how their life ended?

Jesus died horribly for our sins, everyone needs to remember that. The Crucifixion was a most barbaric death and we need to remember so we can appreciate what He gave us.

Hi B50,

My mom died in 1994 and I have not been home since. I am content knowing she is with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, right now. And, when I die -- both of them will be there to greet me when I leave this body and walk into heaven. They are both very alive -- so, why should I mourn their deaths?

Hi Nagel,

If you need a reminder of what He has done for us -- you need to be looking in His Written Word -- not in a grave or on a cross. He is in neither place -- and He is certainly not on a piece of jewelry you might wear around your neck.

If that is the God, the Jesus Christ, you worship -- maybe you do need to search the Scriptures more -- to find the real Jesus Christ.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

I'm sure that you will have a reason why when you use the cross its is somehow what God told you to do and if any body else does then they are not reading their bibles right. Oh I can't wait to hear this one....

Hi Jan,

Thank you for this comment. Yes, all Christians hold the cross to be very important in our Christian faith. However, you will notice that Jesus Christ is not hanging on that cross. The cross, the symbol of His finished work -- is NOW EMPTY! He is not dead on a crucifix; the cross is empty. He is ALIVE in heaven -- and one day all believers will join Him there.

The two -- the Bible and the cross are integral parts of our faith. The Bible, the Written Word of God, tells us what He did to offer all of us salvation. The cross shows us where He did this work of atonement -- and the fact that it is EMPTY, just like the tomb -- tells us that He has done His part in our salvation. The rest is up to us. He has offered the "free gift." Now, all we have to do is to accept this "free gift" of salvation -- and we WILL live eternally with Him in heaven.

Jan, our Lord is not on the cross. After He resurrrected -- forty days later, He ascended into heaven. Today, He is sitting at the right hand of God, interceding for all Christian believers.

One day, soon I believe, He will return and take His church, the worldwide body of Christian believers, out of this world -- the Rapture.

Then, there will be seven years of Tribulation -- horrors like this world has never seen. And, then He will return -- His Second Coming; and He will establish the Kingdom of God on earth -- the Millennial Kingdom. He will reign from the throne of David in Jerusalem for one thousand years, the perfect theocracy.

Then, He will take all believers into eternity with Him. I pray that you will be with us on that glorious day.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

I did not say that He was, Bill.
Sure, the written word would be the best option, but it's not always possible.
a bus driver, for example, while they can reach up and touch the symbol hanging aroudn their neck, they cannot reach over and read a few verses while driving.
a soldier, when entering combat, can place his hand over the pocket that contains his crucifix for a second, but cannot ask the enemy to hang on a sec while he flips open his testment and reads a few psalms.

and why are you directing this at me? i'm not catholic, i don't have a crucifix. I'm merely trying to help you see that while YOU might not need a little reminding comfort throughout the day, some people DO, and if that little piece of metal helps someone feel closer to God, why isn't that good enough? going to church and reading the bible at every waking minute isn't going to help YOU either.
you say your saved. i believe you. but if it's true, why bother with any of it any more? if you stopped goign to church now, and stopped reading your bible now, and you kept living your life as you do, would you still go to heaven?

yes.

so why keep going and keep reading? because it comforts YOU. it makes you feel closer to God.
i'm pretty sure that they know that Christ isn't hanging around their neck.
have you never picked up a photograph of your wife when you were away from her, and felt just a touch of comfort from it? or of your kids?
i have. and as silly as the concept is, it did make me feel better.

If you can't understand this, there isn't much point in continuing this discussion, but i don't understand why you would be against anyone doing anything that made them feel closer to God. i would think that if something so simple as a peice of jewlery reminds them that He is always watching, that you would be in favor if it. maybe that cross around their neck will keep them from making that one bad choice that wrecks their lives.
Granted, i don't mean they they would use the jewlry as a surrogate, and worship it instead. that'd be idolatry.
