Is this Good for America?
Shouldn't religion be separate from government?
National Day of Prayer events.
Ronnie Coleman was a little curious when a friend invited him to a National Day of Prayer event at the Colbert County Courthouse on Thursday.
He had never participated in one of the events, but he plans to make sure Thursday's isn't his last.
"I really didn't know what it was all about until I got there. I'm glad I went with him," said Coleman, a Florence resident. "I believe in prayer. I believe we can make a difference if we can get everyone praying together. And today, we prayed for our country."
National Day of Prayer events were held throughout the Shoals, the state and the nation. It was the 57th national prayer event.
The theme for this year's event was: "Prayer! America's Strength and Shield."
"Our country has always acknowledged God, even in the earliest days," said Jerry Edgil, pastor at Washington Park Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals.
Edgil said a church was usually the first building built when people settled in an area.
"Even before their own house, they had a place to worship," he said.
Edgil said Thursday provided Christians with a chance to express their faith and give thanks.
"Everything we enjoy comes from the Lord," Edgil said. "It's a shame that we don't (do this) more."
Several people gathered outside courthouses in Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale counties to participate in the noon events.
Tommie DeVaney, whose husband is the minister at Calvary Fellowship Church in Florence, was one of the organizers of the Lauderdale County event. She said she was pleased with the number of participants.
"People are realizing the reality of what can happen when they pray," she said. "We can make a difference in our lives and in the world we live in through prayer."
Edgil said he was encouraged by the number of people, especially young people, who participated at the Tuscumbia event.
"The praying was centered around God; it was earnest and from the heart," he said.
