I'm 36 and we used to do a pass out thing to get out of class when I was in middle school. Basically, you squat down, take 10 really deep breaths, then stand up and tense all your muscles as much as you can. Boom, you pass out. I imagine it's just kids doing something stupid and they don't realize the potential effects. There were a lot of dumb things I did that I had no idea about their negative consequences.
Zuter, while I wouldn't recommend what you're speaking of, the act committed by the boy in the story involved using some sort of cord. Many young men actually hang themselves for several seconds. As PR pointed out, it is properly called autoerotic or sexual asphyxiation and perfomed while stimulating the genitals.

As an aside, many accused of murdering their partners use this for a defense--their partner wanted to be choked to increase the level of pleasure.
This has been going on for at least 20 years. I once had a life insurance client who's teenage son was found in his bedroom, dead, with a cord around his neck. I wondered why it wasn't being investigated as murder. Turns out the parents preferred the cause of death be listed as "suicide" (even though he died before the incontestability period was up and the policy wouldn't pay) instead of being ruled accidental death. The parents didn't want people to know he was found with his pants down, etc.....

That was the first I ever heard of it. My teenager was surprised I knew about it when I asked a while back. Seems it's common knowledge in school.
I believe "to die" in poetry, etc., is a euphemism for orgasim. It seems in the middle ages, the Catholic Church taught that each orgasm we had shortened our lives, so it was often referred to as death.

But yes, I've heard of this for perhaps 30 years. There was a Peter O'Toole movie called "The Ruling Class" in which his father accidentally kills himself this way.
