My roommate and I have hardly gotten to see each other all summer between work, school, family vacays, etc. So, we each took off a couple of days next week and are wanting to take a day-trip somewhere. Here is where I need the help, what would be something fun for 2 females to do??? besides amusement parks or point mallard... been there, swam in that... It can't be too far or amazingly expensive because, hey, we are talking about 2 college kids here!

Any Great Ideas???

Maybe Chattanooga to the aquarium, Nashville to OpryMills to shop then downtown to have a meal and maybe a drink, Memphis or Birmingham to the zoo, Huntsville or Birmingham to the Botanical Gardens, Birmingham to shop at the Galleria and have a nice meal, or even Atlanta, Huntsville, Birmingham, Nashville, Memphis (or even Rome, GA) to see a baseball game.

Just some suggestions.
You could go fishing somewhere on the TN river. You could go hiking at Bankhead Forest. You could visit one of the local festivals (Rogersville has one next week and Handy is coming up). YOu could go to the Jack Daniels Distillery in TN. YOu could go to Tupelo and see where Elvis lived and go shopping at osme outlets. YOu could go to Tunica and go gambling -- lose enough money and they'll comp your room. There's plenty to do...and many of it is cheap...
Chattanooga is a nice weekend trip and is probably the of of the best darn touristy places in the Southeast. I wouldn't touch Memphis.

If anyone suggests the new aquarium in Atlanta or taking a trip to Atlanta take a gun and shoot them in the head.

With regards to the Dismals its a beautiful place for a hike and its cheap. It would be a good family hiking experience where you don't really have to too far to see nature or don't want to get lost and die in the woods.

Bankhead is cheaper and you could hike for days but I wouldn't take really young kids there or people who really don't hike. Its incredibly under appreciated resource in this part of the state. The times I've been you hardly saw anyone else there which was nice. Its something you would want to look into and not just hop out of the car.

I'm a college age female, too. My friends and I recently went to Nashville and had a great time. We went to the Irish pub across from the Wild Horse saloon and had a blast! Also, the art museum has great exhibits. The great thing about walking around downtown there is that you don't have to spend a dime if you don't want to.

We also go to the movies at the Alabama Theater, but you live in Birmingham, so I'm probably not telling you anything new Smiler Have fun and be safe!
One of the best weekend trips we ever took was to Chattanooga.

We stayed in a rail cart here: http://www.choochoo.com/ They have shops and restaurants there which is very cool. Nice breakfast too.

We ate here: http://www.bigrivergrille.com/

Went here:

and here:

There's a lot of cool stuff there and it's not that bad of a drive. They have a 'girl's just want to have fun' package here: http://www.chattanooganhotel.com with spa treatments that look cool.

Whatever you choose, y'all have fun!
also, nashville flea market is open every 4th weekend of the month, at the fairgrounds downtown (65 north into town, right on wedgewood for a few blocks, plenty of signs)....if you go on friday, it's open from noon to 6pm, about 95% of the vendors are there, hardly any crowd, and you can park right up at the gate....the weekend times (all day) are more crowded...they have a mix of every imaginable thing, some very reasonable priced..Smiler
Memphis isnt bad if you keep your wits about you. You can stay at the Motel 6 downtown and it puts you a block away from the Trolley in the hospital district which will get you to Beale street or to the Pinch District. I think I was paying $52 a night to stay there. A day pass on the trolley is a few bucks. Or you could rent a cabin at Joe Wheeler and play cheap golf for a couple days.

Are you outdoors type? If so I suggest the Dismals Wonder Gardens. Some of my family and I went there last year(fist time in over 20 yrs) and it was truly a fun day.

You stole my thunder. I've been there about 5 times in the two years since I heard about it.

Fat folks should avoid it . . . Or consider hiking it every day. Wink

if you like antiques (trash treasures too), there are some quaint little shops in franklin tn (just south of nashville)..it's a pleasant ride if you go thru lawrenceburg to columbia, then hit 65 north..and only a couple of minutes more, and you're at the cool springs mall, and a zillion eating places..Smiler

Definitely try this route. Just north of L'berg is the Amish enclave and several Amish stores. Then on to Mt. Pleasant and the Phosphate Museum. Then trough Columbia to Franklin. You will love it!
