Sassy Kims

OF ALL THE THINGS YOU CAN SAY ABOUT SOUTHERNERS, CLAIMING THEY ARE CLOSED MINDED AND WILL NOT LISTEN TO OPPOSITION IS PERHAPS THE MOST INSULTING OF ALL.

Neil Young is NOT A JINGOISTIC, HATE FILLED PERSON. If anything he represents the best of what the South has to offer. Much Like William Clinton, and Jimmy Carter, and Al Gore.

Ok, since you can't answer my question, I will answer it for you. Southern Man by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, is not putting down the south as you say. he is putting down the southern man of the Ku Klux Klan. That's what he is referring to. The southern man who carried their Bibles. The song itself, refers to racists. I'm sure you have not listened to the song. You only went by what your grandma and grandpa said. Or if you have listened to the song, then you knew what the song was referring to, the Ku Klux Klan, who is also a proud member of the conservative party.

EdEKit,

I might have misunderstood you here. Are you suggesting that he's from the south? He was born in Toronto, Canada (which those in north Canada might consider the South, I suppose). Anyway, I want to extend a friendly offering to you. Tread carefully in these waters. A person who is not a southerner (like yourself) who chooses to tell southerners what might or should be insulting to them and then tell them what the south has to offer is walking into a shark tank.

AND THE COLLARY OF THE GOLDEN RULE APPLIES TO ME AS WELL AS YA'ALL.

If your idea of great men is Slick Willie, the Peanut Man, and tree hugging Al, you can have them. Of the three, Carter was ineffective, Clinton is a liar, and Gore is only looking for someone to remember him.

Neil Young IS NOT from the South. He isn't even from America...he's Canadian. He doesn't have a clue about being Southern.

According to a documentary on Skynyrd a couple of years ago. Then band felt the same way about Young... as the lyrics were put into Sweet Home Alabama. After learning what Youngs song was about,.. again, according to the documentary, Young and Skynyrd became friends. Dont think it went as far as fishin buddies, but there was no animosity(sp) felt towards Young from members of Skynyrd.

"Crosby once said that Young calling Nixon's name out in the lyrics was 'the bravest thing I ever heard.' Crosby noted that at the time, it seemed like those who stood up to Nixon, like those at Kent State, were shot. Neil Young did not seemed scared at all."

MORE PEOPLE SHOULD STAND UP LIKE CROSBY,Stills,Nash,&Young DID in light of the Iraq War...

Neil Young's political views can be debated. His artistry and genius as a musician/songwriter/performer, in my opinion, can not. He is from a time when artists had the courage to risk commercial success by expressing relevant points of view in concerts and on vinyl. He did not grab a microphone and recite the most popular 15 second sound bite of the day, and then launch into a song about pick up trucks or ho's in the 'hood. And, he performed in plaid flannel shirts way before anyone in Seattle.

What you say may be true, but guess what? radio station's will not play those songs today,You Can't Express Yourself anymore on CD, if you do,it won't get played.Wonder Why?

My point is that he didn't have to travel down here to find racism. There is probably more racism up North. Everybody wants ro put down the South. I hope they continue that way so they won't come down here and mess it up. Jesse jackson and Martin Luther King are southern men too

Yep, But somebody removed King,Jackson was no Martin Luther King,Jackson was a wanna be.King was a freedom fighter against the klan.
Now is the time to put all of bigotry and racist issues behind us and look to the future. As long as people on the outside sees us squabling about this kind of stuff, nobody is going to want se us prosper. It is time to wake up and realize this is the NEW SOUTH. People from other places will only see you as one sided, only if you express it as your stand. As for myself, I am proud to have freinds of all origins and background. To me it feels good to have broken the cycle that was dictated from my prevous generations. (seems like there is a country song that hits on this). By the way, the song by neil young "southern man" was wrote in the early seventy's. Times has changed, It is time to wake up, and smell the barbeque!

I am grateful for the caution, and I was totally unresponsive to it earlier. What I should have said, was No, I was not saying Neil Young was a Southerner, but that he represented what I understand the Southern Culture honors and respects. As it happens, I consider myself a Southerner. The next state south of Arizona is Sonora, MEXICO.

What I should have said to Sassy Kims is that SHE WAS INSULTING SOUTHERNERS BY CLAIMING CLOSED MINDEDNESS WAS HIGHLY VALUED IN SOUTHERN CULTURE.
