This subject was brought up once before when there were less members on here. For instance, if the person who robbed the Kangaoo station had had a "41", "33", "20", i.e car tag it might have been a lot easier to identify the vehicle, but, no someone had to go mess it all up. If you can find the color of the vehicle, the approximate age of the vehicle with the tag of the county on it, sure would help a lot in solving some of these crimes. But, as usual, someone or somebodys had to go and mess things all up.

bluesman: I fully agree with you 100%.I have Never liked these new tags from the beginning ,because for this reason that you are talking about here . The new tags are mixed up so. Some of them start out with a number & some start out with an alphabet. There is NO way any one can record all these numbers for this reason , if they see a crime going on .I say they should have left the county nubers on them at the beginning , at least you could remember that part & that would be a big help. Then the LEO could run a search through the N.C.I.C. & possibly come up with a vehicle that matches the vehice that was at the crime scene. This is just my opinion - sorry this is so long. Thanks !!

Why did they change the tags. Can someone give me a good reason? I suppose it helps the people who live in east Lauderdale, and buy their tags in limestone to get out of paying their fair share of the county taxes.
I understand new tags will be out in 2009. The system is using new technology, holograms, etc. The GBA tags were a test. Neither GBA or SFOA will be available after Dec. 2008. Unless a person pays for a specialty tag, they will all be alike with the county numbers. I like that system since it helps me learn the Alabama counties.
Bluesman, I agree 100%. At first they claim that they were running out of numbers then they running out of number and letters. Then all of this I support projects came into focus and people wanted to show their support and advertise their support.

I sometimes wonder have law enforcement can even tell what state a vehicle is register to in a moving vehicle.

Back to the Nunber 41 (Lauderdale Co.) all it would have taken was to reduce the size of the number and letters and then added more numbers.
[COLOR:BLUE]My son, who is a LEO, told me that when he pulls a car over or is looking for a car that may have been involved in a serious crime, or even a minor infraction, It is almost impossible to tell where that particular vehicle is from. He said that a lot of the reason that people get Helping schools tags or any of the other tags, that are NOT the numbers indication the County, such as 41 for Lauderdale, and 20 for colbert, He said that the people who are up to no good, get these tags so that it makes it harder for the LEO's to be able to be on the lookout for that particular vehicle in the county that they were purchased in, and probably are a lot hard to catch. Especially if they are wanted for a serious crime. It just makes it harder for the LEOS to locate the car easier. He made this point to only go on to say that a lot of the individuals are doing crimes that they would not want the LEOS to be able to find them as fast as they would if they had the numbered county tags on. They have it all figured out. We need to get 1 step ahead of them. But, it seems that they are always 2 steps ahead of our LEOS. God Bless all the LEOS, EMS, and all those that are here to keep us safe. Let's give them all the respect that they deserve.
Maybe I am looking at this from a different angle...But say there is a person that pulls up beside my 16 year old daughter and he follows her. She wont stop be he knows that she has a 33 tag..so automatically he knows she is from Franklin county. Now with the new tags..she could be from anywhere...So this also give us a little more privacy of which county we live in....Just a thought....
I remember back in the late 70's is when they changed back to the county numbering system, think they quit in the 60's. but there was alot of people that didn't like it cause LEO'S could pull you over cause they knew what county they were from. two sides on every coin..BHW I have 6-41 plates over the bar at Bubba Gumps bar in Hong Kong. check it out next time in Hong Kong!!!
You need to also tell your children as I did when they began driving, that if they feel anybody is following them or watching them to drive to the nearest Police Dept. or Fire Dept. and report it, and also NEVER drive into their own driveway or pull up in front of their house. That will surely let the other person know where they live. That is very dangerous also. Just go to some nearby Police or Fire Department, and report it. Don't go home, because you are being followed or watched. Just be aware of your surroundings.

But you felt ok telling everyone in the world who has access to the internet?

A car owner can be traced with or without the county prefix. I don't see how it makes any difference.

Several years ago a mentally disabled man came up to me and addressed my by my name (although he mispronounced it). I asked how he knew me, and he replied that he had gotten my name from my tag number--a police officer friend of his had given it to him. So much for the wonderful Florence police...
FV,, you are so correct on that one, any LEO, if they so choose, and a good decent honorable LEO would not do this, they can call into one of their dispatch friends and get a tag "ran" on a certain vehicle. I have seen and heard this done many times. My son, who is now a LEO, did not like this practice when it was being done, will not do this, he is one of the very few decent, honorable and honest LEOS that we have left. But, if somebody wants the information on you, they can easily get it off a license plate from your car, if they have someone who will do it for them. I think that is a crying shame too.

I would be sure to read, understand, and be willing to defend my position on Code of Alabama 1975, Section 40-12-265 before I put any decoration on my car tag.

As for the county numbered tags vs the Helping Schools tags or the God Bless America Tags or whatever - as long as the state uses car tags to generate revenue, they will allow "vanity plates". Unless they stop allowing people to get personalized plates like BIGMAMA or 2FAST4U or whatever, people will still be able to get out of having the county prefix on their tag. May states (MS, TN, and GA) have stickers to identity the county. AL could look into doing that if being able to identify the county is a help to law enforcement.

If you are really interested, in the UK they have a system that "reads" license plates - using a camera - and matches the plates against a database, and alerts the patrolman if there is a problem. It's automatic and works while the patrol car is in motion. I don't remember exactly how many plates a single patrol car's system reads, but it was in the hundreds per day.

I'm pretty sure that the UK uses front and back plates, and they are uniform accross counties (shires). They also have a smaller population.

I wish they would do something like that here. My minivan must match a description of a local notorious criminal, because I have had patrol cars make u-turns to pull me over, and then say that they thought there was something wrong with my tag.

This system in the UK needs to be check into and how much would it cost.
Just out of curiousity, does anyone know how much processing these special plates costs taxpayers (accounting for the various funds, audits, disbursing the funds, & other recordkeeping)? Does the state recoup the money or does all of the additional cost of the plate go straight to the organizations with the taxpayers footing the recordkeeping costs?
