Rumor is a Jack Nicklaus course. Actually posted on his website but says date TBD. I personally dont think it would work, mainly because of the competition with RTJ, which is by far exceeding everyone's expectations. And whoever said it would be better than another subdivision....when new ones are going up, I believe that is a good sign, not a bad one. The housing market is doing quite well in our area despite what those in the national media say.
I'm planning on building a course in my back yard. No naysayers are invited. I'll be consulting with Jimmy Neese on how to obtain city funding.

I'm going to start a TV ministry at the same time, and market the whole thing as Crusty's Everloving Holy Golf Trail. Our ministry will be to provide a Christian golfing experience for those lost souls who risk eternal ****ation by playing on Sundays.

We will actually have two courses, one named "Old Testament" (sacrifices and foursomes allowed) and the other "New Testament" (strictly for twosomes, and requires mutual respect). Each hole will be named after a different book in the Bible. The house Church will collect all bets donations, greens fees and other offerings.

Greens will be renamed "Heaven", roughs "Purgatory", water hazards "Hades" and of course sand traps will be renamed "deserts" (plan on spending 40 years if you land in one). Each hole will have its own seven rings of Hell.

And of course, particular features will have Biblical references (e.g. the big apple tree situated just behind the first tee of the Old Testament course will sport a snake offering his course knowledge).

Prayers may be said before each stroke, thanks after sinking each putt, and hole-in-ones will result in the immediate rapture of the player. Pastors will be available to bless all balls, clubs and other equipment for a small donation. Exorcism of any golfing demons will also be available by a qualified priest.

A new sacramental drink will be instituted to represent the sweat of Christ, blessed beer. Wine will still be available, and all food service will be pot luck.

The Old Testament will be built in bottom land and probably will be subject to severe flooding.

I expect to have the whole thing finished in about six days, will spend the seventh trying out the new courses. After that, I'll just try to find ways to make the courses more difficult and frustrating for most, easier for the undeserving, and will generally find ways to keep all players in doubt and confusion.

The cost of membership is included in your tithes. Please, please send us some money in order to provide for my displaced and starving children (pictures on request). And if you know someone with a drinking or drug problem, who might beat their spouses or children, or who are just too ill to play, simply send us donation and we will pray for them.

For those of you non golfing types who think building another course is stupid think again. This area is perfect for golf. RTJ draws thousands of people to this area for golf each year. They bring their money to this area and typically stay a week to play not only RTJ but other surrounding courses. For one Blackberry in Florence is beginning to take shape mostly because of better management. Cypress Lakes in Muscle Shoals is always packed and get ton of runoff from RTJ. What this will do is put pressure on other courses in the area to step it up . The Country clubs in town and the small par 3 courses may be hurt the most by this. If it is true and the Jack Nicklaus name is attached then I bet it will be challenging and kept up. There are also a ton of golfers in this town. My 4 year old went for his first lesson and there were 12 other kids ( 4 and 5 years old ) in his class. Golf is popular people get over it. It is a sport everyone can play from children to retirees which this area has a ton of both.
I encourage Sheffield to follow Florence's lead and consider closing a school so they will have enough money to build a golf course.

Would someone please explain to me why the city governments around here are in the Golf Course business? In other parts of the country this is a project left to free-market corporations. I see that here in the Shoals, a bastion of socialism, the government feels compelled to spend tax money to compete with free-market capitalists.

How many did we lose in VietNam?

Wake up folks. Golf Course Resort. What does that mean to locals? First of all, country clubs and small courses can still cater to the locals. Of course the locals can play at the resorts as well but visitors come to the resort, play golf, spend money in the Shoals and GO HOME! How could you possibly be against income from other parts of the world. When you go on vacation, you spend money in someone else's town. They benefit from your hard working income. Why wouldn't you want to benefit from theirs?

There is truth in this, not a done deal yet as I understand but a very real possibility. Why would we want another golf course? Why wouldn't we?

Educate yourself before you write something idiotic. School consolidation had absolutely nothing to do with city government. It had everything to do with declining enrollment. City government had no sayso at all.

Golf course, that would be awesome, for those on here that support golf, has anyone heard the rumor about RTJ looking to be Turtle Point....

Even if Robert Trent Jones were still alive, he couldn't "be Turtle Point". Buried there, maybe. He certainly designed Turtle Point, but I doubt he ever wanted to be Turtle Point.
A friend of mine lives in Minnesota and says that there is a billboard in his town with the Shoals RTJ golf course advertised. He says some of the locals there came down and were very impressed and plan on coming again. I think despite the naysayers the course has done very well and proves that something good could come out of it despite the adversity.
The hotel appears to be doing well and it looks great. Thus far I can't find a whole lot to complain about in the RTJ endeavor. i wish all mytax monies were spent on such a successful venture.

My bad crustymac, that was a type-o on my behalf. I was referring to a rumor that I heard about RTJ wanting to BUY Turtle Point. I was wondering if anyone had heard anyting similar.

Ah!! I haven't heard that, but I haven't been part of the Turtle Point crowd for a long while. Unless they were in serious financial trouble, I doubt they would sell.

My father-in-law has step children who used to live in NYC. One of them calculated that they could fly into Muscle Shoals, rent rooms, a car and play golf for two days for what it would cost them to play in (outside of?) NYC.
Another golf course? The reason Sheffield is attempting to get these type of "attractions" is to clean up the city. Right idea, wrong direction! How about getting rid of sooooo many government housing? How about getting the Police Dept. to actually patrol it's neighborhoods? From my understanding the housing area on S. Atlanta is so out of control they barely have time to do anything else. When they ignore those types of areas the problems worsen.
