Ice cream 'licking' video traced to Texas Walmart; suspect will face charges, police say

Ice cream-maker Blue Bell continues to investigate after a viral video last week showed a suspect opening a container of the company's ice cream inside a grocery store, licking the contents, and then returning the container to the store's freezer.

Blue Bell believes the viral video was shot in a Walmart store in Lufkin, Texas. The company added that it had all tubs of its Tin Roof-flavor ice cream removed from the store as a precaution, according to a statement.

Meanwhile, the Lufkin Police Department is working to confirm the identity of the female suspect -- dubbed the "Lufkin Licker" in some reports -- and will get a warrant for her arrest on a charge of second-degree felony tampering with a consumer product once her identity is confirmed, the department said in a Facebook post.

The charges could be penalized with a prison sentence of 2–20 years and $10,000 in fines, per the Texas state penal code, and as noted by The New York Post.

Detectives are also working to identify a male seen entering and leaving the story in a green shirt with the woman. Police believe he was the person behind the camera in filming the viral "licking" video. "Detectives will continue to work through the holiday on this case," the department said.

On Wednesday the company said it believes it has identified the exact container that appears in the video.

“Based on security footage, the location and the inspection of the carton, we believe we may have recovered the half gallon that was tampered with,” Blue Bell said, according to Fort Worth’s KTXA-TV.

When someone tells you America is a country of laws laugh in their face.
This sort'a thing has been going on for a long while now.
Twenty years ago I was raked over the coals for suggesting this country
is free to a fault, more true now than then.
If there were laws to protect innocent and correctly punish the guilty
these animals wouldn't be free to do whatever crossed their moron minds.

@JUTU Cuz I’m literally the new kid on the block, coming here from Memphis. And major spelling and grammatical errors annoy me, so I send corrections to media all the time. They distract from the writer’s credibility and message. And the conversation was becoming so inane & mean I just had to throw that out there. You’re welcome.

In that case it is very odd that "cuz" doesn't bother you. I'd think that major spelling error would offend your delicate senses more than a typo where an extra *r* had been struck. I repeat...a lot of trouble to make a new account just so you can correct a typo. I didn't say thank you.

@Jutu No trouble at all, I’m essentially retired & will continue to comment on stories.

If you think "sending corrections to media all the time" is a productive way to spend your retirement....knock yourself out. I would suggest however, that you learn to use proper grammar and spelling yourself before you set about correcting others..."cuz"...you know...there may be a new grammar cop in town ready to "correct and serve". Bye now.

Surely something will be done with her. Product tampering used to be a big deal.

(CNN)Police say they have found the person who opened a carton of ice cream at a Texas Walmart, licked the creamy goodness, and put it back in the freezer.

Lufkin Police say the female gleefully contaminated a half-gallon of Blue Bell Tin Roof ice cream -- which the company describes as "a vanilla ice cream with a rich chocolate fudge swirl and roasted peanuts dipped in dark chocolate" -- last week in a Twitter video that has garnered more than 11 million views.
Detectives have "identified and spoken with the suspect and her boyfriend in the 'Blue Bell licking' case," a statement from Lufkin Police Department says.
The suspect, from San Antonio, is a juvenile, so police will not identify her.

"We do not intend to pursue charges against her as an 'adult' and therefore what happens from here is at the discretion of the juvenile justice system," police said in a statement.
Offices are discussing her adult boyfriend's involvement with prosecutors.
The statement from the Lufkin Police Department says, "The case will be turned over to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and remains under investigation."
Blue Bell called the unsettling footage a "malicious act" in a statement on its website.
The ice cream maker said it inspected the freezer case that contained the licked ice cream, found the problematic tub, and removed all Tin Roof half-gallons from the Lufkin Walmart.
"The safety of our ice cream is our highest priority, and we work hard to maintain the highest level of confidence of our customers. Food tampering is not a joke, and we will not tolerate tampering with our products," Blue Bell said.
A Walmart in Corpus Christi isn't taking any chances with its own ice cream stock.
To protect its frozen goods, the store said, it stationed an "armed" guard in front of its Blue Bell freezer and posted a photo Wednesday of an employee holding a squirt gun; the photo was removed about 18 hours later.
"We're guarding our Blue Bell Ice cream for your Weekend party, what a great way to cool down in the Hot Texas heat !" the post said.

Well I escaped Memphis to Colbert county and now reside in Fairhope Al.  One thing I can tell you is no body likes the grammar police!  This is not english class, it is free form communication.

I’m originally a Yankee from Ohio, but have lived in East Memphis for 30 years. I have a small place in downtown Memphis now, but I’m not there much. I like Waterloo a lot better.

Related to the original post, did you see that “some dude” became a copycat licker?

Now Bluebell will probably have to completely revamp their packaging process, for no small fee I’m sure.

I emailed a writer for the Daily Memphian this AM about a typo. He wrote me back, said, “Thanks,” and fixed it… There something about being an educator and occasional science writer; I just can’t help it. I had a great secretary years ago who taught me more about writing than I ever learned in school. She used to mark up my manuscripts with lots of red ink. She taught me a lot about written communication.
