Good lord, it's an epidemic! Note the article says:

According to the Louisiana Health and Population Survey, released in November, the number of Latinos living in households in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes has increased by about 10,000 since 2004, to 60,000, even as the total population has fallen by about a quarter, to roughly 625,000.

Last summer, researchers at Tulane University estimated that there were 5,000 to 7,000 illegal Latino workers in Orleans Parish alone, excluding nonworking relatives. But some community workers estimate that tens of thousands have arrived since the storm.

“The demographics of the health units used to be 85 percent African-American, who had Medicaid, and 15 percent other,” Dr. Work said. “When the clinics reopened, I started seeing the faces changing. Now 85 to 90 percent are Hispanic undocumented, and only 10 to 15 percent have Medicaid.”

This will effectively shut down the medical facilities there. They cannot keep helping these people for nothing. Can you imagine being an American citizen living in that area? Well, guess what, if we don't start emailing and calling, that will be us.
Just found this on ocregister.com and I'm sure it's only a drop in the bucket. This is only one state.

"California expects to spend $940 million this year treating illegal immigrants around the state."

Then on this site:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/parkland.asp

Which reports:

"Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas - A recent patient survey indicated that 70% of the women who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants."

What gets me is the million legal Americans who can't get health care. I have a home based business, and had a lapse in medical insurance for awhile and was scared to death. Thanks to the Republican congress, and I'll thank God and Greyhound to see them gone in Jan., medical bills can no longer be claimed for bankruptcy. I was one hospital stay away from loseing everything I own. If you are middle class, own property and don't have medical insurance in America today, you better stay healthy or be prepared to lose everything you have worked your entire life for.
Speaking of bankruptcy...I was a plantiff/debtee in a case against ex-GF of mine. While attending bankruptcy court awaiting my turn to speak against my ex, I heard at least 10 cases come before the bankruptcy trustee:

3/4 of those seeking bankruptcy had this defense: I over extended my means.

Translation: I do not know how to budget/I do not know how to use credit cards properly/I got caught in embezzlement/I do not want to work and pay my bills off/I am a "victim".

The other 1/4 had valid reasons.

Too bad the bankruptcy code was changed in 2005, 5-6 years too late for me and others frauded by thieves and can't collect what is rightfully ours. Thank God it was done to prevent what happened to me happen to others.
I know exactly where you are coming from, Maddog. We have a home based business as well. We just got "real" insurance last week & it is going to be very difficult for us to pay for it (had a Health Savings Account before that). Insurance costs are out the roof. And yet illegal immigrants get great medical care for free. Yeah, that's fair.
Like Brentenman, we too have a bankruptcy horror story.

We had new carpeting installed throughout the house and were changing over to gas heat for the house and water.

The carpet had been laid, and the gas installer crewmen came in the house with red muddied boots, permanently staining the carpet.

Then, in the process of installation, they used an auger bit and pulled a run in the freshly laid carpet.

We filed suit in court.

The dirty SOB had filed bankruptcy and included our claim in his case.

It became a criminal act if we sought to recover.

A month later, the @$%^&*! was driving a BRAND NEW TRUCK!
ShoalsLover:

To add insult to injury, she filed 2 false police reports against me in a 2 week period, the first 3 hours AFTER the hearing ended. Worse, I ordered my lawyer to do something about it. He did nothing. He got fired. Local yocal politics at work.

I could have pressed charges for her filing false police reports, but when I asked the police later "felony or misdemeanor?", they replied "misdemeanor". I decided to move on. I hope she and other like her rot. Females like her made me think VERY hard about ever getting married. Sorry ladies if you get ticked by me saying that, but you need to police up some of your "gal pals". Same goes to the males too...

ShoalsLover: a baseball bat to the windshield along with some tires missing stems would've set things right in my opinion. As Josey Wales says: "Doin' right ain't got no end.."
We had (emphasis on had) friends with the entitlement disease I see among many young people these days, as in "my life is so hard that I DESERVE this" or "I'm entitled to it". They had already given a sob story to so many people it was disgusting to get a hand out (which they never repaid) & had the audacity to claim they never get a break. A sweet couple once GAVE them the downpayment on their home. If I got that many breaks, I'd be rich. The kicker, though, was when they bought as much as they could on credit (cars, 4-wheelers for their kids, clothes, jewelry, etc.) and then filed bankruptcy. That is the same thing as theft, as far as I'm concerned. They laughed about it! Needless to say, this effectively dissolved the friendship.
I just noticed a quote from a U.S. Navy Pilot's wife that might interest you (on the site I mentioned).

My husband is a pilot for the United States Navy (yes, he fought in Iraq) and while the health care is good, we Navy wives don't get any of these perks! Car seats? Diapers? Not so much. So my question is this: Does our public medical care system treat illegal immigrants better than American citizens? Yes it does!

As I mentioned, the care I have received is perfectly adequate but it's bare bones...not tope of the line.

Their (the illegals) medical care is free - simply because they are illegal immigrants? Once again, there is no way to verify their income. Parkland Hospital offers indigent care to Dallas County residents that earn less than $40,000 per year. (They also have to prove that they did not refuse health coverage at their current job. Yeah, the 'free' care is not so easy for Americans.)

She has more to say if you'd like to read it. I am unable to copy/paste from that site, so just see the site for more. Smiler

Sounds MUCHO like my ex-GF. Once she got what she wanted, she took off with another dude. She thought she could run, but she could not hide. I felt like ADM Fletcher catching the
J-aps with their pants down at Midway when my PI informed me of success....
